2025-07-01 06:17:49 +0000 UTCActually just to clarify, it wasn't simply because episode 4 was "too disturbing" that it didn't air, and as far as I know it wasn't even NBC's decision it was actually Bryan Fuller's, there had been multiple tragedies in the US in recent months before the episode would have aired and he felt it wasn't a good time to put out something like it. What he said about it in a Variety article from 2013: “given the cultural climate right now in the U.S., I think we shouldn’t air the episode in its entirety.” “I didn’t want to have anyone come to the show and have a negative experience,” "it wasn’t about the graphic imagery or violence. It was the associations that came with the subject matter that I felt would inhibit the enjoyment of the overall episode. … It was my own sensitivity.”

But I do just want to point out that actually most of the characters in the tv series are also in the books, just with some adjustments. For instance, Freddie Lounds and Alana Bloom have been gender swapped and are both men in the books (Freddie is Freddy, Alana is Alan). Other characters have had their plots altered, such as Garret Jacob Hobbs showing up at a different place in the timeframe, and some have gone thru a bit of a process of amalgamation. I won't mention any other characters that haven't shown up or talk about any other alterations to avoid spoilers, but just for clarity want to add that Will Graham is actually the main character in Red Dragon.

Even if not on the channel. Dexter, Mindhunter, and The Mentalist are my favorite cop/murder mystery series.

Hannibal's 'I feel responsible for what happened to Abigail,' dude you are literally the whole reason it happened, lol. Yeah, this show is 90% Will and Hannibal eye fucking, and if you pay close attention you'll also see Hannibal sometimes stares at Will's ass (definitely draws it in his spare time). Ep2 really reminds me of The Last of Us, it was wild. Every episode has themes that relate back to the main characters. 'Killing must feel good to God too' - some A+ therapy Hannibal 'killing is fun actually' Lecter. Ep3: This show is actually supposed to be a prequel to Red Dragon if you wanted to read that, they didn’t have the rights to Silence of the Lambs (so they combined the Will Graham and Clarice Starling characters into show Will) but that's also worth reading and Hannibal's good too, after that it gets iffy. Will's such an unreliable narrator - 'I liked killing Hobbs' vs 'It's the ugliest thing in the world'...which one is it Will? Ep4: Aw, kitty. Fav Molly Shannon movie: Wild Nights With Emily, a comedy about a lesbian Emily Dickinson. There's a Hannibal meme: Hannibal: 'We're having a baby', Abigail: 'Oh, that's grea-', Will: 'It's you, sign here' - Hannibal just wants a cute little murder family with Will and Abigail. Is it people mushrooms? Probably used people fertilizer, if Hannibal's serving it it's somehow got people in it. Gina Torres who plays Jack's wife was in Angel and Firefly too, she's so gorgeous.

But there are no references to this plot line in the books I have read, only Jack and Hannibal are characters that connect the books to the series, I believe. I don't believe I am spoiling anything, just sharing my thoughts about this episode. One extremely important aspect of Dr. Hannibal Lecter's character and integrity is that he typically murders and eats "rude" people, ie. those people who are either crude, vulgar, and offensive, or ignorant sadists, as well as sociopaths without finesse or nuance (like the journalist), also those who are cruel to innocents, and sometimes census takers 🤗😄. Exceptions are people who are in the wrong place at the wrong time, he clearly regrets killing one of the two policeman he murders to escape the cage in Silence of the Lambs.He even acknowledges how much he appreciates the sergeant's respectful, humane treatment ... I haven't seen the movie in years, but I believe he even apologizes to the seargent in the act or directly before killing him. Regardless, Dr Lecter is not a killer of innocent or even murderous young women, unless they fit a profile he disdains. Abigail is not at all the sort of person he would like to eat. He WOULD enjoy feeding her human flesh, lol. He has a twisted sense of humor and enjoys benevolent control over others, often women in which he sees potential... not potential homicidal behaviour, but women he believes have overcome or can overcome trauma he understands would potentially destroy a lazy thinker. He has great respect for people who embrace self actualized empowerment, he disdains those he sees as succumbing to a victim mentality or those who perpetuate the cycle of abuse/trauma. Hannibal long preceded Dexter; he was my first vigilante serial killer in fiction. I don't know if he is the first overall, but he was an early hero of mine. Hannibal is a genius, probably a sapposexual, ultra cultured, and often takes a Jungian approach to treatment - he encourages his patients to face their "shadow self" and work toward integration instead of denying the existence of their dark side. His perspective is definitely skewed... Carl Jung believed integration (acknowledgement and acceptance of one's own hidden defects) leads to a balanced, more compassionate, less neurotic personality... whereas Hannibal is compassionate, and entirely devoid of neurosis, he accepts his own flaws and then knowingly indulges his darkest inclinations with gusto. Also, Hannibal is a foodie... even when it's not made of people. In summary, he will eat the journalist, not Abigail.

The Sandy Hook tragedy had happened only a few months prior and Bryan Fuller (and my guess is network execs as well) thought the content of the episode was too much what with the violence and kids connection. Also, I don't know if you noticed but Alana asked Hannibal if he was expecting her when she noticed the extra place at the dinner table. In the original script, Hannibal tells her that the place was for Will but that his calls had gone unanswered (because he was out of town on the case). Hannibal was trying to create a feeling of family between Will, Abigail, and himself. And lastly- because I really do need to get to bed 🤪- Gina Torres, who is playing Jack's wife Bella, and Lawrence Fishbure were married at the time Hannibal was filmed. I will stop now. 🤡

I think Hannibal is good too, but's pretty different style-wise and a lot of fans were put off by it. Hannibal Rising is pretty universally reviled (though it has its fans), and Thomas Harris was basically forced to write it.
