SANGWON'S #1 FANBOY !!

The bi panic is TOO real with this movie loll

SANGWON'S #1 FANBOY !!

1. i have bi panic every time i watch this movie. like, LET ME BREATHE. 2. theres something really cool about the quote that slim says to sammy "its magic, what we do. its sacred... and big" and then sammy comes in with the humming.. gives me goosebumps every time. i feel like it encapsulates black culture perfectly. to me, anyway. its beautiful. 3. if youre ever interested in more Southern Gothic movies, Eves Bayou is a classic.

Maghen Connolly

Theres such a rich history between the Irish, native Americans, African Americans, Mexicans and Puerto Ricans. The 3 Vultures circling the top of the house at the beginning, represent “culture vultures” Ramek wanted Sammies ability to conjure the ancestors, wanted his “magic”. There’s so many deep dive videos, it’s amazing what you miss. You have to watch this movie 20 times and still won’t catch everything.

Rebecca n Oscar PettyCnts

we definitely are going to watch it but it will be while season 3 of IWTV is airing! I (Wes) actually read the book last month 💖 so excited to watch the movie and see how they adapt it for the show!

Next vampire movie; Queen of the Damed

Love this! I love Remmick as a phenomenal villain with depth. I keep getting annoyed when people keep saying he is not a villain when he could BOTH be a victim of colonization with nuanced intentions AND a villain doing so many atrocities to this community, blinded by his beliefs.

it's Petty Pumpkins babe 💖

I am PRAYING for you guys to react to Midnight Mass lol That being said, I really appreciate yall acknowledging how serious the historical context is in all your videos. These stories matter!! Especially now ❣️

Ronnie Lee

The shade being thrown at Irish folk music is unnecessary lol

Samurai_X_420

There's so much to unpack with this movie! It's easy to spend hours on analysis. Brilliant film. I love IndieWire's interview with Ryan Coogler. His backstory for Remmick and how he's supposed to be so old that he pre-dates some of the racial definitions gives a different context to a lot of scenes. https://youtu.be/yP-4Yhn8I_g?si=3RjiKPJ5gB0xuVR4

Amazing film that I'm so grateful to have seen in theaters. And it only gets better with each rewatch. Suggestion- if you two haven't already watched Hailee Steinfeld in the Apple TV series "Dickinson" I highly recommend it. It's really original and has a modern take on the life of Emily Dickinson. Oh, and it's super duper GAY! 😃

Lavender Violet

I love this movie so much. The amazing music’s a given, but the script and delivery of the lines also gets me hooked. I loved Hailee Steinfeld in the movie.

Tara M. Wilcoxon

It is amazing even though i didnt catch all of the symbolism and metaphors the first time i watched the movie...i still found myself brought to tears because of the music. The score was absolute perfection to really draw out those emotions through the film. Still picking up more symbolism with each re-watch and still crying. I love it! This is CINEMA! Cannot wait to get the 4k blu ray and add this to the collection!

Every rewatch, I get something more from this movie. The anticapitalist themes that the twins embody are really fascinating. I think Smoke's lines here perfectly encapsulate it: "I seen men die ways I didn't even know was possible. I ain't never saw no roots, no demons, no ghosts, no magic. Just power. And only money can get you that." And ofc, we know that there are demons and magic that he just wasn't aware of. And Annie's root work is shown to really protect Smoke until he removes his mojo bag at the end. In combination with all of the other plot elements (for example, the discussion about accepting plantation money rather than "real" money), I think this just hammers home the theme that money and capitalism will not fulfill you at the end of the day. Like we see with Smoke, that fulfillment is found through love and community, and even his tragic end feels fulfilling because we finally see him happy. In a way, Stack can be seen as an example of the opposite: from the start, he's portrayed as the carefree, business/money-minded one, while Smoke balances him out a bit with logic and being a bit more serious. Stack gets eternal life and gets to finally be with Mary, but he is also detached from the afterlife and therefore will never see his brother again. And the whole movie portrays the vampires as missing that connection to the ancestors and the afterlife, regardless of how happy/carefree they seem to carry themselves. The writing of this movie is just so. good.

Sabrina

I think this movie pulls off the twin effect better than pretty much any other film I've seen. Not only the visual effects and editing aspect of making it work on-screen, but Michael B. Jordan's performance truly makes it feel like we're watching two different actors playing two different characters. Twin effects are notoriously tricky, especially when they interact as much as Smoke and Stack do at times. But an amazing performer, assisted by top-tier VFX and pre-production planning, does so much to make it seamless.

Something I really love about this movie (and I'm not original in this, a lot of people have discussed it) is the choice to make Remmick Irish. (Bear with me in this commentary because I am no expert in the themes or history I'm about to discuss, so please correct me if I'm off-base.) It's both an acknowledgement of the way that Irish people have historically been invaded and oppressed, and a commentary on how even that shared history of oppression doesn't supersede white supremacy. Remmick wants Sammy for his voice and musical talents, and he thinks of this as a love and respect for him and his culture. In reality, it's classic appropriation, and Remmick thinking he's giving Sammy his "gift" of vampirism is emblematic of the colonialist mindset that the colonizer knows what's best for a people, even when the people explicitly reject that (as the people in the juke joint consistently rebuke Remmick/the vamp's logic of turning being "Heaven on earth," as Mary puts it at one point). It adds so much nuance that the main villain has suffered through forced removal from his lands and been forced to convert to Christianity, given the context of the film and its primary characters. They could have made him much more of a stock villain and they chose not to, which I think is a genius character choice. I think it's also why they refer to the Irish fili (I'm almost definitely spelling that wrong but idk the appropriate accent, apologies) in the movie opening; I've seen much speculation and agree that Remmick was probably turned for his musical talent, just like he tries to do to Sammy. Again, maybe some of the details are off here, or I didn't explain to the fullest potential, but that has been one of my favorite things to dissect with this film. I can see college classes being taught solely about this film in the future; there is truly so much to dig into.

😭💔 what

The immortality aspect is fascinating 👌🏾 great point

K BF

I’m still blown away of this movie 🥰 this is my all time favorite movie of this year!! I’m praying to god there’s Oscar noms for next year, cause Ryan Coogler is a genius of a filmmaker!! Beautiful storyline, beautiful score, beautiful scenes of history, blues, and black culture ❤️

celeste mondragon

For me, its giving a commentary about how people justify "colonization" as "helping" people when it is founded in destruction and killing, it destroys the community you convince yourself you are helping. Also the commentary on what true immortality is. The vampires are phtsically immortal but are severed from their spiritual side while the human community are deeply connected to their spiritual legacy which is also their ancestor's way of being immortal. He chose the later.

Keith Redacted

That show was perfection, still devastated 💔 it's gone 😢 but I loved it

Love10 ❤️

Have watched a few times so far. I love a lot about the story, acting, music and more, but Elijah and Annie's first scene won't leave my mind. The line delivery, the looks. "you gonna make me say it?" and she doesn't say anything with words, and he says it all anyway because it's like they are one even through discord and pain... it's perfect. EDIT: Interesting you named Lisa's mother's actions as selfish; I can see that but I also see it as a sacrifice. Whether it buys time for Lisa specifically by distraction, buys physical distance between the many innocent in town and the growing evil through engaging with the evil directly, or takes out as many vampires as possible to whatever end that may do some good at the cost of a small group (of sinners)... I see it as selfless, too. To her, inaction is the least acceptable option and her death, if it must happen now, must also serve some good.

It's not a musical but the series Watchmen is one season but because of it a lot of people found out about the Tulsa massacre of 1921. The show deals with race and racism but the spin on ACTUAL history combined with fantasy/sci-fi/superheroes made it one of the most entertaining and well-made shows I've EVER SEEN!! I GENUINELY think you two would love it!

Violet

Oh WOW! Thanks so much for the music recs, highly appreciated! & Coogler SHALL NOT BE SNUBBED! We demand he get his Oscars!!!!!

Petty Pumpkins

It's amazing!!!! We're going to have to buy that score on vinyl!!!!!

So excited to know your thoughts!!!!

Petty Pumpkins

Awww, sorry - but there was no way in hell we were going to wait and watch this on a tiny screen!! We saw it opening night in dolby and tbh we have been saying if we did this movie on the channel it would be a commentary- we've been saying it for over a month- over all social media, and in the community chat and announced it as a commentary! Sorry to get your hopes up, but ya gotta be more tuned in to our announcements so you don't get let down- because we've probably said it like 10+ times on here lol! 💕

Petty Pumpkins

“Then off to reap the corn…” I would’ve went outside to go jam with the vamps, they were to lit 😂

This movie is SO special. I was let down by Nosferatu and Godzilla Minus One so I was worried by how much HYPE there was on this. I put this on, and in the first 5 minutes I KNEW it was going to be AMAZING! My ONLY complaint is that it isn't scary at all for something advertised as a horror movie and the concept behind the mystical gift of music was SOOO COOL I wish it was a bigger part of the story. Basically my complaint about the movie is that it's SO GOOD I wish there was MORE!!! I KNOW y'alls reaction is gonna be funny, insightful, intelligent, entertaining and GAAAAYYY!!! In others words ICONIC!!!

Violet

Unless you saw it in IMAX, you didn't get the aspect ratio changes on normal theater screens. I wish I'd seen it in imax! I think Remmick was transformed by vampires who wanted his songs, and now cut off from his ancestors he needs Sammy's songs to reach them again. So he's kind of tragic character - even though I agree the movie is also clearly painting a metaphor of white people appropriating black music and culture. Even though he turned klan members Remmick himself did not seem like a white supremacist, but he played on their racism when he saw the first two he turned were klan, changing his language from "Choctaw" to "dirty injuns". I appreciate this movie is not black and white (no pun intended) about god and demons, demonstrated by Sammy still embracing the guitar at the end. Every time I see this I feel like I see something new. Great movie.

lunasera

I agree about the indigenous screentime, but I also think it was smart of them to just mind their own and exit as soon as the sun set. Zay Dante 🏳️‍🌈 did a good skit about it! https://youtube.com/shorts/SThatMMIsKk?si=JsLu61Y4aU5yhGbd

darn. thought it was going to be a first time watch

Cannot express how much I love this movie. Acoustic Blues from this region and time period has been my favorite genre for the past 18 years 👵🏽; if you want to explore some brilliant originators of the genre (all from this region and time period) I recommend John Lee Hooker, Blind Willie Johnson, Belton Sutherland, and Robert Johnson—whose lore at the time was that he sold his soul to the devil to be so good at Blues guitar. I wrote my senior project in HS on the history of the Blues & got to take a “Blues and Social Movements” history class in college, and this movie SLAYED the concept and historical accuracy and character portraits. I just feel so lucky to be alive when this came out…. Ryan Coogler said his source inspiration was the stories he’d hear from his uncle who was from Mississippi and lived this, and you can feel it in the heartbeat and soul of the film. If Ryan Coogler doesn’t get the Oscar Im buying a guillotine 😭

Libs

I originally thought this movie was mid and poorly seasoned with some vampires.. But after watching 3 times... I realize it's supposed to be weirdly southern and gothic and the vampires was just for fun. You're weren't supposed to stare at white women. Facts Also the biracial prejudice is real. I'm a quarter British /Irish and no one in my "black family" talk about it. They only want to claim the choctaw indian (which is like 1%). I wish they had a lot more screen time for indigenous peoples... I remember (history class) the Irish got treated poorly as immigrants back in the day. I couldn't stand the preacher's ignorant assumption about music. Thank you for this gift! Fin.

The music in this movie is sooo heartbreakingly good. Like you can feel the yearning in it
