Demian, Nietzche, and BST aren’t saying you need to go down a bad path to know your true self. It’s emphasizing that as humans that live in societies often shaped by religious ideas and beliefs, we hide and shove down a part of ourselves that could be thought of as evil trying to fit in or conform to those societies. Through this, we don’t accept, explore, or mature this part of ourselves bc we think it’s inherently bad to show or accept. But as humans, we have both good and evil in us. In order to find the whole of you, the true you, you must accept both the good and evil. It’s not promoting sinning or choosing evil over good. I think your religious lenses are influencing how you interpret the message, which is kind of the whole point lol.

Also, other posters have already pointed out that this one video is part of a much larger, overarching storyline. Their first albums, the school trilogy, were firmly rooted in youth. They focused on angsty youthful problems--important stuff when you're that age but ultimately sort of shallow. (Not that anything is bad about that, it's an important stage of development.)
The HYYH trilogy was about the last gasp of youth and the turbulent transition to adulthood. It's a beautiful time, in the sense that it's fleeting, but your problems became darker, more real. Now it's less of "she won't respond to my texts so I'm upset," and more of, "Someone I love is suicidal and I don't know what to do."
Wings era (which is what you're watching here) was them maturing fully into adults and facing this new, existential crisis that is presented in the Blood Sweat and Tears video. The themes are temptation, loss of innocence, and honestly a fair amount of self-doubt or even self-loathing (self-love doesn't come later until the Love Yourself album trilogy, lol).
They're definitely not advocating for anything. They're telling the story of a chronological journey through different stages of life. You guys just happened to pick it up in the middle here, without full context. 😅

Loved all the discussion around the MV analysis. But I can't help but feel the mark was missed ever so slightly by some. Hesse, Nietzsche, and by extension BTS aren't presenting a choice between good and evil paths. They're not in any way saying that we have to try bad things. They're saying that both good and chaos ALREADY exist within us all, and becoming a fully formed and self-aware adult means realizing and accepting that.
You can view it through the lens of Christianity if you like, where every human is simultaneously God's perfect creation, but is also is born a sinner. Someone who goes their whole life believing they are without fault can never take the final step towards accepting their savior and being forgiven, right? You just... exist in a weird purgatory.
Part of maturing is accepting the reality of our dual nature, and THEN you can decide how you want to move forward and live your life. That is what Demian, and this video, portray.

I think I look at it more like you have to break out of the don't do this and don't do that but if you should expand your knowledge and let yourself indulge rather being restrictive. The world is not black and white. Sinclair always knew good but craved the chaos and Damien just told him to stop holding back. I also think defining what sin is (could be normal teenage rebellion or the experiences that come from going from childhood to teenage to adulthood?) might help understand other POVs. I think with BST, looks at sin from Christian faith but I also read Hesse's Siddhartha and it gives another POV from Hinduism. You could read if you're interested.

bst is one of their best music videos. the way the tannies always put so much thought and effort into their music videos is so admirable. it always has a meaning behind it. they don’t just conform to kpop “standards”. they make their own standards and follow whatever they feel is best. that’s what separates them from most idol groups. not to shame other idol groups, but most of them do in fact conform to the rainbow and sunshine theme of kpop. they make their videos very lighthearted for fans to watch. BTS is the opposite of that. they give armys something to relate to. not just something to jump around to, but something to truly think about. to reflect on ourselves. to make ourselves better people. to inspire us. the explanation is so good & so helpful. thanks for the reaction guys. 💜

I think it's not about "going down the bad path" and more about excepting the fact that everyone has a dark side inside themselves. There is no 100 % good person on earth. We all feel jealousy, wrath and most of us lust in any kind of way. By accepting and acknowledging this side we can grow and become our true selves. And mostly this starts in puberty when we are trying to find our own identity.

As a Christian myself, I will say that I didn't find the concept unsettling or that they were trying to push a message that they wanted the fans to actively follow. We don't know how religious any of the members are, but the majority of religions have some form of mankind "falling from grace" or falling to temptation. As stated in the explain video, while Demian is the major source material, there were other sources pulled in to also contrast with that ideology.
While I do agree with the majority of everything you guys are saying, I also take into context that this whole story wasn't told with just one music video. I think understanding the entire Wings chapter (the short films, j-hope's intro Boy Meets Evil, the solo songs) tells the story of losing one's innocence and falling for temptation towards the darkness, but realizing that staying on that path ultimately leads to destruction. So, I don't think the concept is literally saying that you need to sin/experience the darkness to know your whole self. But if you find yourself on the dark path, you can't stay there. You have to eventually come out of that, and in doing that you will know yourself better. And, knowing that everything isn't black and white is crucial in understanding the balance between good and evil.
We all make mistakes, especially when we're young, but we have been given grace to realize those mistakes and do better and become better people. As Christians, we know that we are born into a sin-cursed world and temptation is all around us. The majority of us fall into that temptation, but Jesus saves us from that. So that's my rant for the day 😅 Nothing BTS does is face value, there's always deeper meanings embedded in their work as they draw inspiration and concepts from multiple sources to tell a story. And, Blood, Sweat and Tears and the Wings album might be their most complicated concept to date, if you ask my opinion anyway.

Guys what the hell?? You give me more reasons to love you guys!!
Serious respect for you after hearing your thoughts on this!
I really commend your strong conviction and integrity to say that while you understand the concept and philosophy, you respectfully don't agree with it. I really appreciate you speaking honestly cos you could've easily been fake to avoid the risk of losing viewers. It's so refreshing, thank you!!
I 100% agree with what you said!
For myself, I used to really like this song cos I love BTS😆 but also cos I thought I understood what they're wanting to get across to the listener.
The symbolism and even the inspiration source is a little concerning and I'm seeing it from a different perspective😕
I found that in the story, Demian tells Sinclair "Thus alongside the divine service we should also have a service for the devil."🤨
RM also recites from the book in Jhope's 'Boy Meets Evil' speaking about having shaken hands with the devil.
About Nietzche, he proclaimed many times "God is Dead" so when Kev pointed out that the message he's getting from the lyrics is that you can save yourself it's exactly that. The exalting of man. because "God is Dead" as Nietzche would say. But I'm glad you stated that we need the Divine.
I also noticed how Kev held his cross while listening to Nietzche's 'Death of God' and naturalistic philosophy🙏
Josh Kim correctly exposed what this kind of thinking can lead to if you choose to go down the dark path.
Lastly, in the MV you will notice the statue of the 'Pieta' (crucified Jesus in the arms of his mother) but the head and torso of what should be Jesus is distorted and misshapen which again reinforces the idea of the death of God? Unsettling to say the least.
I know that BTS may not be religious but I hope they don't go down the dark path like so many other artists. I love them so much and would hate for all their hard work (literal Blood, Sweat & Tears) to be dismissed and their success put down to another "pact with the devil" type of speculation.
Really appreciate hearing your thoughts on this song guys. Thanks for always giving us fun, genuine and honest reactions!!👏🫶

I loved this reaction. I, like you, am a Christian and have similar beliefs to what you expressed. I do appreciate that the team wrote this from that position of trying to understand the light and dark and temptation. We did all fall from grace and need to face the darkness in ourselves. But rather than saving ourselves we need to rely on God to overcome our darkness and be sanctified and perfected. But I really enjoyed the discussion.

It was super cool to see the discussion that it prompted within your group! This is something special about BTS, it takes us places where we can have these discussions. Even if some of you disagreed with them, with each other, or me, as a viewer, even if we hypothetically disagreed, it's like Josh said, what you're presented with is not completely black OR white. And I think that's the point. The context doesn't even have to be religion, it could be their relatively conservative East Asian culture, the rigid education system, or what or how you're expected to be as a young person, the point is that part of growing up is being okay to question your faith or how you're told to act or to be so that you can ultimately find out what you stand for yourself. That's largely been the theme of a loooootttt of their music over the years as a whole. I LOVED SEEING YOU GUYS EXPERIENCE THAT FOR YOURSELF!
