Painting Dark Skin

Hi fellow Wizards!

I’ve decided to go into detail on how to paint dark skin this week!

If you want to paint a darker skin color, use the following steps:

1. Start with a basecoat of Rhinox Hide. Make sure to use 2-3 thin coats. Basecoating is very important, as it’s your foundation and you want to be able to rely on it in the future.

2. Start sketching highlights with Doombull Brown, glaze consistency (paint 2:1 with water). Put them in the places that make sense for you, considering how the light is hitting your model. In this case, I’ve decided that the light will be zenithal. That’s why I’ve sketched two highlight orbs on the forehead of my Space Marine. One of the orbs is bigger than the other, showing that the light is hitting from the top left (from our point of view).

3. Highlight with Bugmans Glow, glaze consistency. Place this part of highlights in the same places as the previous ones, but make them smaller. This will allow you to achieve a smooth transition.

4. Use Pallid Wych Flesh or Ivory from AK Interactive I’m glaze consistency to sketch the final highlights and underhighlights. Underhighlights are highlights that you place on the lower parts of the surfaces. They are less bright than the normal highlights, but they should be there too. In this case, an example of a underhiglight can be seen on the lower part of the jaw.

5. Go back with a thin glaze of 1:1 mix of Doombull Brown and Rhinox hide. Add this sparingly, to darken the skin back down. In this case, less is more. Don’t rush it and be very careful to not ruin your hard work.

Painting the eyes:

- Add some watered down black paint into and around the eyes to create a sharp outline of the shape of the eyeballs.

- Draw a white line where the eyeballs are, starting near the nose and dragging the tip of your brush towards the ears.

- Using a circular motion, draw a black dot (the actual pupil) inside the white line from the previous step. Make sure to make the pupil big enough (if you make it too small, your mini will look surprised).

Finish the hair and metal parts using the colors you like. I’ll make a tutorial on that in the future.

Enjoy the final results!
