Green Eye Lenses OSL and Eavy Metal Ultramarines

Hi everyone! In today’s tutorial I’m going to talk about painting Ultramarines the Eavy-Metal way and creating atmospheric, green OSL glow effect from the eye lenses.

As this is pretty straight forward, let’s get into it!

1. Over Macragge Blue basecoat, edge highlight with Altdorf Guard Blue. Add this coat with a layer like consistency (the paint has to be thick enough to have a visible impact on the surface). Make this highlight quite thick (wide), as we will need space for the future highlights to be added in.

2. Edge highlight with Fenrisian Grey, again, using layer consistency. Make this highlight thinner (smaller in width) than the last one. This will allow us to create a smooth transition between the colors.

3. Add a few extreme highlights of a 1:1 mix of Fenrisian Grey and White. You want to add it on the very edges of the surfaces. In this case, add it to the two edges of the head strip, inside the lower parts of the breathing area holes and on the very top of the middle breathing area line.

4. I didn’t document the steps for the NMM silver as this is a topic from another tutorial but the steps are simple: basecoat with back, highlight with Fenrisian Grey, wash wish a glaze of Fenrisian Grey, edge highlight with White.

5. Now onto painting the green OSL from the eye lenses. Start with basecoating the eye lenses and the area around them with Caliban Green. Only add this color where it makes sense - the OSL will not appear on the back of the helmet, for example.

6. Highlight with a 1:1 mix of Caliban Green and Yriel Yellow, glaze consistency. Make this highlight smaller than the basecoat.

7. Highlight with a Yriel Yellow Glaze. This should be a very soft highlight, adding that brightness to the glow.

8. The final step will be adding a highlight with a mix of Caliban Green 1-3 with White. This will be an edge highlight and you only want to add it to the edges of the eye lenses and around it (just the very closest areas to the eye lenses).

And this is it! As you can see, it’s not at all complicated, if you have the right guidance.

Here is a collage of all of the steps, so you can follow through the process even easier:

I really hope you enjoy this one!

I can’t express how much it means to me to have your support here. I have been teaching painting for years and now, to be able to grow an active audience who listens to my learnings, is amazing. Thank you!

Best wishes,

Class, is it the same procedure when doing the armour for the ultra marines

john baker

Yes that’s absolutely correct!

Awesome tutorial thank you. Just to make sure I understand correctly... When following any of these OSL tutorials, highlights are getting smaller and smaller but we're moving towards the light source correct?
