Hi fellow Wizards and Necromancers!
In today’s tutorial we are going to have a look at painting desert bases, John Blanche Style. If you ever saw this iconic artwork and thought to yourself: "Wow. That is amazing. Wish I could create something like this" - today is your lucky day!

First, you want to build your base to resemble the scene showed by the legend that John Blanche is. For that, you will need some skulls, sand, small bricks and maybe some guitar string to look like barbwire. After you have prepared the base, you can start painting.
1) Start with a basecoat of Ushabti Bone.

2) Add Mournfang brown, glaze consistency. Glaze consistency = watered down, paint mixed in a 1:3 ratio with water.

3) Add Doombull Brown, glaze consistency, in a few places on the base + on the bricks. Don't cover the entirety of the base with this color. Just add a few patches here and there.

4) Basecoat the metal parts with Rhinox Hide.

5) Add a glaze of Black with the same logic as we have used with Doombull Brown, so in a few small patches around the base.

6) Drybrush the entire base with Ushabti bone. This will blend all of the colors together nicely.

7) Add Seraphim Sepia Wash on the skull, bricks, wire and in a few areas all over the base.

8) Clean the trim of the base by painting it with 1-2 thin coats of Abaddon Black (or any other black paint).

And that is it!
Here are a few more examples of John Blanche style bases I have done in the past:

I’m also attaching a reference collage for your convenience:
