I totally understand it is not everyone’s cup of tea but in the terms of light fun pop songs it did its job. I also will always have a special place for it being the first song she released that she owned.

So Lover is dropped in August 2019 but the lead single ME! is dropped in April 2019 and was pushed by Taylor SO hard for 5 months and people really weren’t vibing. We get the album in August and fans were gagged by Cruel Summer but it wasn’t being promoted, no live performances and ofc no music video but the fans DID love it. So then Covid happens in early 2020, Lover Fest (the festival tour she was planning) gets cancelled and in July 2020 she surprise drops Folklore which shifts everyone’s focus away from Lover. Meanwhile, Cruel Summer is loved and streamed by the Swifties and then 4 years later (March 2023) it’s performed on the Eras tour and now people outside of the fandom get to experience how spectacular that song really is, it FINALLY gets her moment in the sun. It goes viral on social media and resurges in Billboard’s “Hot 100” in June 2023 and gets released as a single 4 years AFTER the album dropped in 2019, and becomes a #1 hit. So, long story short, the song (like Get Away Car) is loved by the fandom from the very beginning but because of COVID, no live performances, not being released as a single in 2019 and then Folklore, it didn’t have it’s moment in the culture until the Eras tour blew it up. It’s truly crazy that it became a #1 single 4 years after its release, it spent something like 50+ weeks on the Hot 100 in 2023 and now has over 3 billon streams. I believe Taylor said she was planning to release it as a single in 2020 to coincide with Lover Fest but, you know, a world wide pandemic changed that plan 😛

It was actually worse than "you can't spell awesome without me" and the reaction to it was so bad that she removed it when the album came out. I don't wanna spoil it in case you don't know the line but make sure to hear it when you watch the music video 💀💀

I’m sorry you were forced to listen to ME HEE HEE again 😛 Me! is a clunker for me too but there are some incredible gems on Lover, it just has more misses than her other albums for me. What I really wanted you to hear was the acoustic versions of Cornelia Street and Death By A Thousand Cuts 🫶

I liked "lover" the song but I just moved on. Once I decided to get back into taylor i listened to this album and was having a hard time but when i heard cruel summer i was like....how did they fumble this being her best single
