I believe the implication is that Katara was standing in that spot the whole time watching the duel from far behind Zuko. It could be that the animators wanted to put more focus on Zuko and Azula and left Katara out of the background, or that they didn’t have the budget for an extra cell or two showing where she was (these were by far the most expensive episodes of the show). Whatever the reasons, the way the duel scenes were “shot” it certainly makes it appear that Katara only shows up at the end, although this was not the intention.

2018-06-08 09:12:31 +0000 UTCYes I don't know why you would be surprised, she's obviously there to help him and even if he decided to do it 1 on 1 she's not just going to run off and leave to Azula. Now I agree it would have been better if she had been shown there throughout the fight. She wasn't in the line of fire between them if you look at it, she was well behind him. Foolish maybe but it's not like she jumped in the middle of the fight I think you weren't paying attention.

2018-06-08 00:37:37 +0000 UTCOzai didn't take Azula with him and left her out of the war which made her feel awful. She felt like Zuko, an unwanted or unimportant piece. She lost her friends. She had mom issues and etc. As a result she lost it in the end.
