【EN】 Yuri Hime Overseas Poll

Hello! Thank you for your participation and interest in the former yuri fans poll for Ichijinsha Comic Yuri Hime. The poll was conducted in the first quarter of 2023 as part of the 4-panel comic column『ドイツのBL女子、百合に出会って女王と呼ばれるようになった話』.

As the column was only published in Japanese language and I do not have rights to publish the comic version, you can find a commented text version of the result below, for those unable to purchase the magazine from their current location or read it. Please buy the Ichijinsha comic version too (issue °4 2023) because it has my cute dog and tiny chickens.

Age distribution of EN yuri fans

※Comment: The age group is somewhat identical to the Japanese one and is overall quite young.

Gender distribution of EN yuri fans

※Comment: The gender distribution however is almost reversed. According to a (rough) estimate by my former editor, in Japan the majority of yuri consumers is about 60-70% male, and gender categories beyond the binary are not really considered or meaningfully measured (yet?).

Country of residence

※Comment: Because the poll was conducted in English and distributed on Twitter/social media, there is an overwhelming bias for English-speaking nationalities. This is not an overview for de facto international distribution, but EN-speaking ones. For example, some major markets for yuri are practically left out (e.g. Korea, Taiwan) because they could not effectively be reached in English.

Also, population-heavy countries such as e.g. Indonesia probably have much more yuri readers than indicated, which could also not be accounted for due to the language barrier. Another one of my former editors once told me France has the second-biggest manga (=book) market outside of Japan, too. Interesting, isn't it?!

※Comment: I love Utena, too!! I was so happy seeing it in the poll, especially because it is so old. I watched the blu-ray in middle school many years after it was on TV. Girlfriends was one of the first yuri manga I read, also in middle school. One day my cousin found it in my bookshelf and I almost died.
