Still gutted about Brian. I always thought he was the better fit :'(

Don't worry. I hope you don't count this as a spoiler, but I can confirm I am NOT giving Mikey a brain tumour! :)

Matthew Smith

You know, rereading it for several times, I'm actually pretty worried about Mikey... Having some illusion, could mean some disorder in his brain like a tumor or something, may not be just mental issues. I hope it's not another big terrible shock for readers!

Hi Johnny, and welcome! :) Suspension can vary from school to school, each having their own reasons for using it. I agree that some students wouldn't really see it as a punishment. Personally I would have loved it as I hated being at school! Although it likely just seems like time off, in many cases they are still given their school work to do while they are off, and then have to ensure they are all caught up upon their return. Making their studies suffer is not the aim. The intention of it is exclusion, separating a misbehaving student from the rest of the student population, sometimes for their own wellbeing. In this case, Mark was violent so he was suspended just as a sort of 'cooling off' period and to make sure he wasn't a risk to anyone else. I think the inconvenience to the parents is actually an important part of it, as it usually makes parents clamp down on unacceptable behaviour more, in ways the school is not able to. Most of all though, suspension is often treated as a 'last chance', effectively saying that if they misbehave the same way again, they won't be suspended, they will be excelled. It's a bit of a final warning! Hope that all makes sense. Let me know any other questions you have.

I meant to ask by email in the previous chapter, but forgot. I'm curious about this "suspension" system, which is pretty common in UK and US (from stories I read) but not where I come from (most students here will see "suspension" a blessing not a punishment...) In such a boarding school, suspension means to ask student leave school and stay at home until the suspension ends? Or are they "kept" (imprisoned?) in a dedicate place in school? What if the student's home is way too far and going home would not be a realistic choice, or the parents aren't able to keep their kids at home during the suspension?
