Kai and Leo glanced at each other nervously as they heard the door open. Sitting up in the painfully uncomfortable seats, they watched as their parents emerged from the adjoining room, followed by a uniformed police officer. Kai instinctively reached out to grasp at his brother’s hand and, surprisingly, Leo held back just as tightly. They stared expectantly as their parents gave the officer a polite nod and then approached them.

“Mum… dad… I…” Kai started meekly, jaw quivering.

“It’s okay,” Mrs Robinson said, offering a gentle smile. She held out her arms and Kai jumped up, hugging her eagerly.

Mr Robinson gestured for Leo to stand and patted him gently on the back as he said, “Nobody’s pressing charges. You’re all good!”

“Thank fuck,” Leo sighed, then winced a little at the language he had used in front of his parents, though his dad just nodded. “Wait,” he said, suddenly frowning, “NOBODY’S pressing charges?”

Kai pulled away from his mum and looked at Leo, then back to their parents.

“That’s right. Nobody,” Mr Robinson nodded, then looked rather stern as he said, “You’re NOT being charged with assault! And those little…”

“Easy,” Mrs Robinson quickly interjected, holding out a hand to silence her husband before his very obvious anger flared too brightly.

Mr Robinson scowled and said, “Those little bastards aren’t being charged for what they did to you, Kai!”

“What? No! Fuck that!” Leo said angrily, “I don’t fucking care if I get charged with assault. Fucking charge me if it means those cunts pay for what they did!”

“Okay, first of all, cool it on the language, I won’t tell you again!” Mr Robinson said, glaring intimidatingly at Leo, who immediately shrank away. “And second, they’re receiving some rather harsh repercussions for what they did, just not through criminal charges.”

“Justice is being served, honey,” Mrs Robinson jumped in, keeping her cool, “But nobody wins here by all of you ending up with criminal records!”

Leo panted slightly as his rage began to cool. Looking back and forth between his parents, he eventually asked, “They’re really being punished?”

“Harshly!” Mr Robinson said, clearly suppressing a smile.

“Now come on, we need to get you two home to bed!” Mrs Robinson said, glancing at the clock that showed it was almost 3am.

As the two boys sheepishly followed their parents out of the police station, Leo glanced at Kai and asked quietly, “You okay?”

Kai sighed and shook his head. “Not really,” he said softly, getting a nod of understanding from his twin. “Thanks, by the way,” he said with a meek smile, “For what you did. I mean, I’m sorry it got you in trouble, but… seeing you beat the crap outta them. I just… thanks!”

Leo replied with a gesture rather than words, slipping an arm around his brother as they walked.

The drive home seemed painfully long, especially as Mrs Robinson was trying to make casual conversation. It was like she was trying to make it seem like a normal family outing, rather than retrieval of her sons from a police station in the middle of the night following an illegal online sex show and subsequent brawl. “LEO!” both parents yelped at once.

Kai immediately sat up, scowling at his twin for a moment before he reluctantly started to laugh. It slowly grew more hearty as Leo joined in. After resisting a few chuckles, both parents finally joined in too, amused but mostly just letting out the collective tension.

The next few days felt almost ethereal. Everything was just a little bit weird, with the spectre of what had happened lingering over the boys. Kai remained painfully embarrassed every time he saw his parents. As Miles scurried over to the girl, Kai glanced at Caleb briefly, both of them painfully aware of Leo’s unspoken crush on Miles. Looking to Leo as he asked softly, “Are you okay?”

“Why… wouldn’t I be?” Leo asked, mildly confused. As he saw his brother staring at him, occasionally glancing round to Miles who was now talking to Eve, Leo blushed a little. He looked like he wanted to say more, but asking if Kai was hinting at what he THOUGHT he was hinting at would start a conversation he was really not ready for. Instead, he smiled gently and nodded. “I’m happy for him,” he said quietly.

“Yeah, me too,” Kai nodded gently.

After a few minutes, Miles hurried back as Eve disappeared in the opposite direction towards her own school. “She said I rushed off so quickly at the party that we never got to exchange numbers!” he said, brandishing his phone, showing her as a new contact.

“Wait, you… do you… was she…” Miles stuttered, glancing round in the direction Eve had gone. He stopped and stared at his friends for a moment before he asked, “You really think so?”

“Totally!” Leo nodded.

Kai leaned in close and whispered, “I think our daily suck might finally be over!”

With spirits lifted a little, the boys continued on to school and as it loomed near, Kai felt his nerves growing. Going in was every bit as terrifying as he imagined. It was like when you walk into a room and everyone goes quiet, so you know they were talking about you, but instead of a room, it was the school quad, and instead of a few people, it was several hundred! The silence that washed over the expansive group when Kai appeared was eerie, though it thankfully didn’t last long.

The insults, teases and jokes started right away. It seemed Kai’s ability to draw a crowd continued as most of Year 11 seemed to follow them inside to the small foyer outside the four rooms used for their year’s form rooms. “Ugh, I came in here to get away from them all,” Kai huffed quietly as the room filled.

“You can find somewhere else if you like. Me and Cay can make sure nobody follows!” Leo offered, getting a nod of agreement from the other boy.

Kai sighed heartily and shook his head. He frowned as he spotted Luca hiding away in a corner, sitting on the floor huddled up with a book. “No, I’m staying!” he said, then nodded and added, “And I’m putting stuff right too!”

“Whadda you…” Leo started, but paused as he watched Kai push his way through a group of nearby heckling boys to head to Luca.

“Hey, get up,” Kai said, giving Luca a gentle tap with his foot as he stood over him.

“Wh… what… what?” Luca asked, gulping nervously.

“Come on,” Kai insisted, holding a hand down to help Luca stand.

“The gay boys are sticking together!” a voice sneered. It was Vin, and his comment seemed to turn the spirit of the crowd a little, many of the boys making the switch for playfully derogatory to outright mean.

“D’you reckon they finger each other?” “Bet he was holding the camera!” “Gays of a feather…” “Wait, so Kai’s a homo too?” “Bet they’re dating!” “Cock suckers!”

“Kai, no!” Luca said, shaking his head anxiously.

“Luca, they’re cunts, all of them!” Kai insisted, “And if they’re gonna be cunts to you AND to me regardless of what we do, then we can at least hang out together while they do it!”

“That’s good logic,” Luca said, chuckling awkwardly. He immediately flinched as the insults continued.

Kai took Luca’s hand and started pulling him towards the others. As some of the other students got in the way, he rolled his eyes and said, “Oooh, careful, back off or you’ll catch our gay germs!” They cleared a path, getting an annoyed grunt from Kai that they probably believed him.

“Well, hello there,” Miles said with a smile as Kai returned with Luca.

Luca smiled, catching a reference that the others all missed. Though he continued to look visibly anxious, he quickly joined in the chatter with the others, though it mostly centred around Miles talking about Eve as the entire group did their best to ignore the gossiping swirling around them.

“Fuck me, that faggot shit really IS contagious!” Vin said derisively as he and Fin emerged from the crowd and moved closer to Kai and the others.

“Yeah, looks like fagboy’s taken down the whole fucking group!” Fin sniggered, then burst into a bad Oprah impression as he bellowed out, “You get AIDS and you get AIDS, you ALL get AIDS!”

“The fuck is wrong with you?” Leo snarled furiously. Several of the surrounding students seemed to share Leo’s anger at such a truly repugnant comment.

“Oop, watch out, Psycho Leo’s at it again, best call the police!” Vin said, getting some laughs from the boys around them who all knew the police had intervened at the party.

“Stop,” Luca said gently, grabbing Leo’s arm to pull him back as he advanced on Fin and Vin.

Leo glanced at Luca and started, “No, those two deserve…”

“No, please,” Luca pleaded, looking at Leo with big sad eyes, desperate to avoid making things worse for anyone.

“Yeah, listen to the head faggot. Gotta do what boss bitch says!” Vin spat venomously, getting a chorus of oohs from the braying crowd.

“Fuck off, you twats!” Luca said sharply.

Leo and the others recoiled a little. Seeing Luca snap back at Vin and Fin was surprising enough, but to actually hear him swearing was a shock. It was something they all did so casually, but Luca had always been so polite and softly-spoken. Leo and Caleb exchanged glances, both clearly ready to intervene when the confrontation inevitably escalated.

“Oh, the little fag’s finally got some balls!” Fin said, grinning wickedly.

“Yeah, Kai’s balls! And they’re usually in his mouth!” Vin added, getting some laughs from around them.

“Oh please,” Miles interjected, “If anyone’s sucking balls it’s you two. I swear, you could cut the sexual tension between you with a fucking knife. Just get a room already. Nobody’d be surprised!”

The statement caused uproarious reactions from all around as Vin and Fin managed to look both embarrassed and furious all at once, especially as it drew more heckles from the crowd which had already been slowly turning against the two thugs.

“Shut the fuck up, you little ginger bellend!” Fin said, stepping forward.

“Yeah, just try it!” Caleb growled, moving into the way.

“Yeah, you’d better hide!” Fin said, backing down as Miles stood behind Caleb, “Fucking homos!”

“Jesus fucking christ, get a new hobby you ridiculous lumps of gristle!” Luca said as he moved out from behind the safety of Leo and Caleb. “You’re actually kinda pathetic. Always bitching at anyone smaller than you, then backing down as soon as anyone bigger comes along. You’re fucking cowards and I’m not scared of you!”

“Woof, go Luca,” Kai sniggered.

“Shut your cum-filled mouth, you little whore!” Fin shouted at Kai.

“Yeah, I don’t think I will!” Kai said, shaking his head as he moved forward to stand beside Luca. “Luca’s right. You’re nothing. You’re just two angry little nothings and I ain’t scared of you anymore, so go fuck yourselves!”

“Oh, oh you are BOTH so dead,” Fin said, shaking his head as he and Vin moved up to face Kai and Luca, fists clenched.

While both thugs looked furious, their expressions faltered slightly as neither of the smaller boys even flinched.

As the two bullies finally reached their limit and burst into an attempt at violence, Luca and Kai were both yanked backwards sharply by Miles and Caleb, away from the flying fists. Leo surged forward in their place, with both arms out to clothesline the two bullies, who fell hard to the ground. The crowd let out a series of gasps, yells and cheers for the strike, which left Vin and Fin looking shocked and winded.

“Yeah, you know what,” Leo said, panting heavily as he scowled down at the two scared-looking thugs, “I ain’t scared of you either. I was, but they’re right, you two are NOTHING. I shoulda done this YEARS ago! I hear you spouting that homophobic shit at my brother and I don’t care how ‘psycho’ you think I am, I’ll happily kick the crap outta you!” He glanced to the side where Kai had moved back up next to him and offered a smile, which was happily returned.

Fin and Vin shuffled back a little as they saw the entire crowd had now turned on them, both still catching their breath from the sudden, violent fall.

“And just so you know, I’ll do a LOT worse than that,” Leo continued, “If you EVER go near my boyfriend again!” He reached out to grab Luca and pulled him into a kiss.

The room fell silent for a moment as the revelation rippled through the crowd. All at once, the spectators went wild, cheering for Leo as he pulled out from the kiss with Luca. Vin and Fin scurried away, disappearing between the forest of legs around them.

Standing with his arm around Luca, Leo looked to Miles, Caleb and Kai, smiling awkwardly for a moment before he said, “Surprise!”

“Oh!” Leo exclaimed, “Oh fuck!” As Kai looked a little confused, Leo shook his head and said, “I genuinely hadn’t thought of that. I mean… I know everyone knows I have a boyfriend, but… I guess it never occurred to me that that also means they know I’m gay!”

Kai laughed and nodded as he said, “Yeah, kind of a package deal!” He cocked his head curiously and asked, “So you’re actually gay? Not, like… bi or pan or anything?”

Leo nodded. “I’m sorry. I probably shoulda told you sooner!”

“Until Luca?” Kai suggested.

Leo nodded, annoyed that he was unable to stop himself smiling just from hearing the name.

Caleb didn’t reply, he just cocked his head and stared at Kai as if it was obvious.

Kai felt his heart thumping so hard that it threatened to break a rib. “And… was she right?” he asked softly.

“I… I don’t… Kai… I…” Caleb stuttered, so overwhelmed he couldn’t even string a sentence together, holding back but desperate to speak at the same time.

“Caleb,” Kai squeaked tearfully.

Caleb gulped and nodded.

I am so ridiculously, stupidly, embarrassingly in love with you and I’ve been too scared to tell you about it for so long. But now I have and I REALLY need you to say something back before I explode!”

“Caleb, I…” Kai started, but got too choked up to continue.

“Kai,” Caleb whispered, “I… I dare you… to kiss me!”

“No!” Kai said, shaking his head at a devastated-looking Caleb. A smile spread over his face as he said, “I won’t do it as a dare, but I do wanna kiss you, so… try something else. Dare me to tell you how I feel!”

“Kai, I dare you…” Caleb started, but he was cut off as Kai stretched up on tiptoes, reached round for the back of Caleb’s hair, his fingers gripping onto wet hair, and pulled him into a kiss.

It was firm and forceful at first, a stern declaration of intent and a tentative test at the same time. As both boys melted into it, they moved slightly, both relaxing as it became softer and more passionate. Caleb leaned down a little and wrapped one arm around Kai’s torso, the other around his butt as he lifted him off the ground. Kai happily allowed the lift and wrapped his legs around the bigger teen’s waist, arms gripping around him to hold on as he felt his back get pressed against the tiled wall.

The kiss continued for a couple of minutes, a flood of feeling from both boys flowing forth as they embraced, their tongues eventually emerging to explore each other’s mouths. When they finally parted, it was barely more than a few centimetres, their noses touching as they stared into each other’s eyes.

“I have wanted to do that for SO long!” Caleb said dreamily, smiling so broadly it almost hurt his face.

Kai grinned back as he said, “Hey, all you had to do was put it in the form of a dare and we woulda cut out a LOT of hassle getting here!”

Caleb laughed and leaned in to give Kai another quick kiss.

“So did you mean it?” Kai asked curiously, still happily clamped onto Caleb, “How you feel, I mean!”

“Hmm, I did,” Caleb mused, “But that was BEFORE I kissed you!”

Kai looked a little bewildered as he asked, “And… now?”

“Now,” Caleb said, trying to look serious before a grin broke back through, “Now I love you even more!”

“I love you too!” Kai said back, giving him a quick peck on the lips.
