Survey re: iOS charge changes
Added 2024-08-16 17:05:49 +0000 UTCAs advised in my latest newsletter, Apple are making changes to subscriptions made through iOS. Before I make a decision about pricing, I wanted to get some info to see how many of you it would affect.
In an ideal world, I would like to keep the prices the same but have everyone subscribed through either browser version or Android, as that would mean you pay the same price, I still get the same percentage of it and Apple gets nothing, because fuck Apple! But realistically I know life isn't that simple! So I'll gather as much info as I can and then see what I want to do.
For reference - If I opted for the increased iOS charge that would increase the monthly subscription for iOS users from £5 (GBP) to £6.50. Changes would start from November.

EDIT - From looking into this elsewhere, the general sentiment across both creators and patrons seems to be 'fuck apple, the iOS app sucks anyway'. I definitely know of at least one patron on here who isn't a fan of it!! Patreon have said they're working on improvements to the browser version of the site anyway, and I suspect this will push those improvements through even quicker now! They seem as unhappy about this as all the users!

I hope that most creators (including you) decide to increase the price on iOS. At this point only a huge backlash from users will be enough to make Apple listen and stop with these extortion tactics that can have a huge negative impact on small creators. If most creators just silently swallow the additional cost, there will be no incentive for Apple to change anything.

2024-08-16 19:15:23 +0000 UTCThe iOS app on Apple devices sucks eggs. It is totally worthless. I believe I have a browser subscription, but I’m not sure how to tell for certain. Right now I’m using the Safari browser on an iPad. I will probably delete the Patreon app just to be cautious.

I would imagine you could subscribe directly through the patreon site, then just login to the app (iOS or Android) but I'm genuinely not sure. I'm attempting to find out. EDIT - From looking into it... I still don't know for sure. I believe that it may vary by location! I think at least in the US they are able to restrict access through the iOS app to people who subscribe through it, but that may not be the case in the EU thanks to anti-monopoly laws. Other parts of the world... I have even less idea!! Annoyingly, I have no way of seeing how people subscribe. All I can see for membership is whether someone is subscribed or not and membership dates! :(

But if I subscribed on desktop and use the Apple app, does it affect me the same way? Also, can you tell who subscribed via Apple and who subscribed another way? Or is there a way that I can check? I’ll just unsubscribe and resubscribe a different way if that is the case.
