This short story is a generous contribution by Montreal Merman, an invaluable member of the Cabaret Bara community and talented writer (and Ian, the waiter in this story, is his OC)
I'm sorry this one is coming out as kind of a flashback, it has been written quite a while ago and I've been taking forever to get around to it.
Thank you for your patience with me, Montreal Merman, and again, thank you for this short story!
The Twin Dragons
(Part 1)
Not sure why the sudden thunder shower was such a surprise. Two, three, four days straight of heatwave temperatures, followed by a downpour? Sounds perfectly reasonable for Montreal. And yet here he was ducking into a bar on the heels of his co-worker, with his arm over his head—doing a poor job of keeping his hair dry. The tank, jean shorts and sandals he was sporting also did nothing to help.
“Sorry, what was that?” He asked Leon as the two patted their feet dry in the vestibule.
“Huh?” Leon looked up at Finn confused.
“I said I hope I didn’t do something to offend Alek tonight. And you were saying something—"
“Oh!” Leon remembered. “I said it wasn’t you. Alek’s got his own issues going on right now. Trust me. Don’t worry about it.” Leon cupped Finn’s shoulder as he wiped his face clean of the rainwater, the looked away to make sure he still had his work keys on him.
Finn could only respond with a weak smile, he couldn’t help thinking that he’d done something to put off Alek somehow since the day they were at the Carnival together with Taiyo and Markus. He could feel the tightness in his chest, and Leon’s reassurance was unconvincing. With a sigh, he followed the blonde into the bar.
This was the first time Finn had ever been here, he’d never even heard of it before. While he and Leon were cleaning up after the closing shift at the Cabaret, Leon muttered something under his breath about the other guys having failed Finn somehow for not showing him this spot. In terms of design and general style, it was almost chic. Lots of booths with partitions for privacy, nice stained wooden floors, and dim lighting. The place was almost empty. The cute bleached white-haired bartender looked up when they walked in and flashed a knowing grin of recognition. He then tossed a dry bar towel right into Leon’s face.
“The asshole’s not working tonight?” Leon asked while he patted his face and neck.
“Nope,” Came the short reply. “But I’m the one who will throw a fit if you drip all over the place.”
“Don’t worry, Bunny.” Leon quipped back. “How about a fresh one for the new guy?”
“Oh shit! Sorry…” the bartender looked embarrassed as he came toward Finn from behind the counter and shook his hand, offering a clean table rag in his other hand. “Ian.”
“Finn.” Fit build for a bartender. Swimmer’s build, and remarkably cute when apologetic.
“Yea, but what do they call you?” Finn gave a half-chuckle, Ian clearly knew the Bara boys fairly well.
Leon shrugged pensively in response. “I was going with ‘Ginger’ up until now, but I don’t know…” he trailed off.
When Finn didn’t answer, Ian chimed in. “I think y’all could do better than that!”
“My brother sometimes calls me ‘Finnigan.’” Finn offered, and immediately regretted it based solely on Leon’s expression.
“Ew! No way.” And then he back peddled, “Wow, sorry! That sounded harsh. I just don’t wanna use your bio-family’s pet names for you. You need a Bara pet name if we’re gonna become your work fam. Like Bunny over here.” Leon expertly diverted the attention away from himself. Ian sighed and rolled his eyes before gesturing to the back of the room and taking the towels from each of them.
“Liam is at your table in the back. I’ll be with you boys in a jiff. What’ll you be drinking, newbie?”
“A piña colada.” Finn coulda sworn Leon’s eyes would pop right out of their sockets with how hard he rolled them. Leon—would be terrible at poker. Finn definitely caught him mouthing silently to himself “oh my god” before the two of them sauntered off toward Liam sitting alone.
“Guess what whiter than white boy here drinks?” Leon thumbed towards Finn while weaving his butt between the table and the black leather cushions of the booth to sit next to his brother. Finn sat across from Liam, and offered an innocent smile and a shrug when Liam blinked at him.
“Beer?” Liam guessed. Leon was impatient and unimpressed.
“He’s still gay bro.” He said flatly.
“Oh!” As if that was the only other hint Liam could’ve ever needed. “A piña colada.”
Now it was Finn’s turn to blush from some level of embarrassment. Liam laughed out loud and, with clear admiration, hollered something about a “Classic BWBD.” This triggered another bout of chuckles from the two brothers. Finn huffed and blinked again. Things happen way too fast with these guys. Why am I always lost?
“He’s had a rough shift bro, leave him be.” Leon managed to say.
“You started it!” Liam defended himself.
“What’s a BW—” Finn started to interrupt, when just then Ian appeared from behind him and to his right.
“Basic…” He set down a margarita in front of Liam.
“White…” And another for Leon.
“Boy…” Another ‘clunk’ sound for Finn’s piña colada.
“Drink.” Ian flashed a trained “I make my living off of tips” smile, placed a hand on his hip and jutted his chin out like he just had timed the whole thing out. Those at the table did chuckle, but there was no applause. The drink did look good, and Finn appreciated Ian’s flare for showmanship.
“Are you two being mean to the new guy?” Ian patted Finn’s shoulder reassuringly.
The truth was Finn kinda loved the teasing. Leon & Liam always managed to create a laissez-faire atmosphere. Well, most of the time anyway.
Leon was as chill as an assistant manager could be. Sean, the owner and Finn’s older brother, had mentioned him a couple of times in passing before Finn agreed to take the new job at the Cabaret. Out of all the guys, Sean trusted Leon the most. In his own words: “He’s a ball buster, in every way and all the right ways.” Finn had assumed that that meant sex, but today was the second time Finn had worked with Leon and Sean was absolutely right. Leon somehow seemed to be everywhere at once. Letting the bartenders know they were running low on ice, letting the bouncers know that they couldn’t just flirt with the people in line, they had to let them in once in a while too.
