Pictured: Fetish Multifarium member Godfrey texting a local venue owner about potential dates for a private party. Few people know this, but my troupe Fetish Multifarium throws more than just the public events at the Mercury. We also do private play parties, which is basically a party where sex and kink play is allowed. These parties take a LOT of coordination, we have to make sure that every thing is above-Board and most importantly safe, sane, and consensual. First up is negotiating the space - we have our own set of rules but want to make sure that the venue owners are comfortable and do things like establish smoking areas and what spaces are off limits etc. Liquor is a major issue, because of the kind of party we throw throwand WA state liquor laws, we cannot have it at a bar or club, it must be a privately owned space. If alcohol is available, part of my crew's job is to make sure that no one drinks too much and tries to partake in sexual activity. I love these parties and planning them is extra fun. Being a member of the local kink community- safety is very important to me. Part of why I started throwing these parties in the first place is because I didn't feel 100% safe or comfortable at other events. That's nothing against how anyone else runs their show, I just have a high set of standards so I decided to create a space where my kind of play space (one where a team of people are constantly on hand making sure everything is cool and with clear rules about behavior) is created. People don't realize how many rules there are in BDSM. Not for the play itself, that's up to the participants to negotiate, but even the Center for Sex Positive Culture has an hour long orientation before you can become a member outlining basic ettiquite for their space. Once you know them, they're surprisingly simple (ask before touching, no means no), but I love spaces that are consent-driven and you do not find that anywhere so much as you do within the kink and fetish community. It's certainly there at our parties. That's why they take so much work to put together, and that's why they're so damn awesome.
