I feel like this episode was the start of Patrick’s downfall/ his character getting written badly. -He is frequently mean and *overly* stupid, not even in a funny way, to his supposed best friend SpongeBob, who always goes out on a limb to help him, so much so that it becomes unenjoyable to watch. Similarly, Squidward is also written badly in later seasons- in earlier seasons, it’s almost satisfying to see him get kicked about, because he’s mean or blunt to SpongeBob at the start of the episode. But in later seasons, he doesn’t do anything to deserve the antics of Sponge and Patrick, so you just end up feeling bad for Squidward rather than amused. Other characters get written more poorly in later seasons as well, these are just the two who stand out to me the most
