2020-10-18 03:23:59 +0000 UTCStevie, I appreciate this SSLP ride on Em's birthday but like other comments I think you came into this with expectations too high preventing you from seeing this album for what it represents. You may hear elementary bars now but then it was revolutionary, the whole album is revolutionary which is why many call it a classic. NOBODY was rapping and rhyming with that level of emotion and creativity. It opened the world up to Hip Hop cuz all we had was Gansta Rap at the time, this created a new wave in music! You'll like MMLP but I think you are missing the value of this album. BUT perhaps it also helps me understand why maybe black people did not gravitate to this. I could be wrong but SSLP was predominantly listened to by white people and people like Charlemagne and Jamar still use these tracks to diss Eminem today, like they never checked Em after the SSLP for the reasons you are saying.....🤷♀️ PS.... Stevie he is talking about an Afghan as in a blanket, usually made my a Grandma😉

2020-10-17 18:16:13 +0000 UTC@Jeremey I'm 29.. Eminem Show at the time was amazing. It was his "mainstream" prime in my opinion. He was at his peak of saying controversial shit at the highest level. He obviously still does and always have but it felt like it meant so much more at that point in time.. and since it was so scrutinized made he was so scrutinized up to and at that point, made it so much better. It was also my 1st or 2nd ever concert and had a lot of nostalgic meaning so cant say that's not playing a big role in that lol

You’ve got your expectations set at older refined rapper Eminem but this was just young slim shady putting himself on the scene with shock value and lyrics and flow. There wasn’t deep double entendres and metaphors but he’s still displaying his elite cadence and multiple syllable rhyme schemes all through this album. He grabbed the world by the nuts with this one and then MMLP is where he really started to refine his craft.

Meaning elementary when comparing it to rap now, in 2020, at the current endpoint in the culmination of all rap. And when you clook closely; you'll see a lot of people saying it's elementary compared to a lot of stuff that.... Em did first. Meaning Em will start some stuff. Em and others will incorporate it into their repertoire. It will evolve. Then looking back it is "elementary". But it's only elementary because of Em's impact lol because Em did it and others followed. So now we're used to it and it sounds "basic".. but at the time it was groundbreaking and original in many ways. This same thing happens with a lot of artists. Hell, when I listen to Rakim or Big Daddy Kane I'm like "wow, this shit is corny". But at the time, it was something nutty. And Em probably wouldn't have gotten this far without that stuff. This same thing happens when people listen to old Wayne, who is the most influential rap artist of our generation, all the time. But regardless, if you looked closely, you could pick out 100 elements of this album that were absolutely revolutionary. That no one was doing at the time and no one had done before. You've gotta think; this was between Biggie's death and The Chronic 2001. Rap was damn near dead for 3 years and still really hurting until after the Marshall Mathers LP when southern rap(mainly Atlanta + Wayne) took the nation by storm and 50 came into the mix. And a lot of the stuff that started working was clearly unfluenced by Em. Not AS much untl the Drakes, J Coles, Kendricks etc came along. But a lot more than most rap fans would like to admit off the bat.

Consensus at the time and since from all the hiphop heads I know is it was a HUGE fall from SS and MM. That was one reason Recovery was so huge. Because the falloff seemed to start on that album. If I had to guess I'd say you guys are all probably 24-27 years old, or so?

2020-08-24 09:40:26 +0000 UTC1. SSLP(nostalgia, timelessness, most heart, most soul, some cool and relatable subject matter, underrated lyricism. "Bars" now means one specific type of bar in 2020. And I hate that. 2. Music to Be Murdered By. 3. Recovery. 4. Marshall Mathers LP. 5. Kamikaze. To me, the rest of them aren't even in close to the same league. These are Em's 5 classic albums. Although I do expect him to add at least 1 or 2 more to this list. It hurts me that I can't put Revival on this list. One of the biggest wastes in hip hop history. The subject matter is the best. Especially to me, as an adult. The lyricism is dope. But it sounds like complete ass. Which is really why people didn't like it much. Despite that Machiavellian shit Em likes to pull to control the narrative. It wasn't because he was "woke". It just...... doesn't sound very good. And it's not even that Em that you listen to in awe of his pen twice then... never play again. Which is fine and happens a lot these days. It's like that but it also sounds bad. The perfect storm for a crushing blow to what, lyrically, had the bones to be Em's career masterpiece. But ya those 5 are his classics. But they are all at least alright, in their own ways.

It's one of my favs for nostalgia's sake. But also because it has the most heart and soul of any Em album. Plus it just sounds good and isn't too serious. Kind of the opposite of a super technical Em song that is cool, but you'll prob listen to twice then neve again.

My favorite on this album might be as the world turns (you r gonna hate it 😂 )
