This song is a masterpiece. Bad Guy and Darkness are also amazing examples of storytelling. Not to mention how much we use the word Stan today in regards to diehard fans (of anything)

He rushed to record the hook, then put a simple loop beat and sent it to Dre for Em (or something like that). Eminem heard the hook and immediately thought "That's an obsessed fan, someone who's taken it way too far." Dido said he took her most sweet and innocent song, and turned it into a twisted crazy story. She thought it was Amazing how Em thinks and how powerful the message is

But there are some other strong ones too...Relapse has a couple that are a little more horrorcore and of course Stan's sequel, Bad Guy are all frequently mentioned, but for me Darkness is by FAR the most advanced example of his storytelling abilities since Stan. Navigating that story, told as a double perspective (that alone is mindboggling how he paralleled himself with the real life shooter and made the details fit), maintaining a consistent double entendre throughout, while having a heavy emotional impact and political message? Darkness is a fucking masterpiece and it's criminally overlooked!!!! Man released that song THIS FUCKING YEAR people! If YT hadn't buried it I'm 100% certain it would have exploded a lot more...but the content is highly triggering and the OG upload didn't have a disclaimer, so it got heavily reported and had to be re-uploaded. YT still buried it even after that though.

With different minds involved to capture a dif audience. at the risk of sounding corny, the music, by itself, is more pure. in fact, I rarely watch music videos, anymore. Unless it's to watch whoever made the vid's work. But never first. And Em has some great storytelling songs. But Stan is like... probably top 100 storytelling songs EVER. That list would prob be mostly other genres. Folk, bluegrass, country, classic rock, metal, old school RnB etc..

On the surface it is great story telling (some of the best) but it isn't just a fictional story he made up to showcase his writing ability. It is showing the world that there are crazy fans in the world that are obsessed, and take everything artists say at face value. Eminem use this song as a metaphor to explain a bit more about who Eminem is, he cares about his fans and has good intentions (Stan should fix up his relationship for ex) and "I say that stuff just clownin dog" not to take what he says serious. There are so many levels to thing song. No bars, not much word play but arguably the best story telling in rap and a complex metaphor to explain the relationships between him and his fans (and fans around the world).

A couple notes: -Remember when you did The Ringer (which you loved?), back then you wouldn't have caught this line but I'm sure you would now: "Maybe Stan isn't your CUP OF TEA, maybe your cup's full of syrup and lean". (Stan: My tea's gone cold I'm wondering why...) -This song is very reminiscent of Stephen King's book "Misery" (there's also a movie about it, very dope as well) and it's crazy you mentioned Stephen King in this video, I was just thinking about writing this comment telling you this right before you mentioned him. -At the end of Walk On Water he says: But as long as I got a mic, I'm God-like Me and you are not alike BITCH I WROTE STAN!. Just thought it was worth bringing that up haha! Thank you Stevie!

He even had a line in So Far where he says “I’m going Bezerk Asshole” and bezerk and asshole are next to each other in the track order. I swear we probably still haven’t unpacked half the wordplay he’s done at this point.

Think you’d have a deeper appreciation of Bad Guy after this one. Great reaction as always 🙌
