Fusion is about the emotions the gems share and when they are in sync they are able to fuse. Dancing is the easiest way to get in step and synced together. That's why they usually dance to fuse.

Fusion dances aren't really necessary for fusion, as much as they're just helpful sometimes. What you said about being able to fuse by just touching fingers is basically true, all that really matters for fusion is being in sync with each other, it just so happens that a fusion dance is a really good way to get into that "mindset". The intention was probably at some point for fusion dances to be necessary for fusion, but the writers probably realized it was a bit clunky at some point to use in every situation.

Those gems shards were shattered gems (shards) that’s why they came out as hands and feet’s instead of an actual body.

Another thing, this is a small detail a lot of people miss. But when Greg told Connie "Human beings? Human beings" and when they high fived, Steven wasn't included, and he was once again questioning his humanity and realising that he might not be able to relate to anyone other then himself.

When it comes to forced fusions. Not only did they force them to fuse, they used gem shards. Remember that the only way to kill a gem is by shattering them. So homewold was Literally using the corpses of their enemy faction, the Crystal gems to conduct experiments on. It gets more and more messed up as you read into it more.
