"Mad as a hatter" originated centuries ago, but Mad Hatter became popular w/ Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," which was a character inspired by Charles Dickens' Ebenezer Scrooge, which is who MGK likened Eminem to while calling himself the Ghost of Christmas Past in Rap Devil. Mad Hatter is also one of the original supervillains of Batman, which is a comic that Eminem references probably a dozen times in his discography, and we know that he was pursuing comic book drawing before he picked up rapping. I have a hard time believing that Em just threw in "Mad Hatter" for random rhyming, but I'd also be surprised if he included it for all of those reasons. I think at least one of them is true--most likely the Batman comic reference imo given his direct connection to comics and no evidence that he loved Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, but the other connection (especially to Rap Devil) is just fascinating.
