Ok, let's break this down a little bit for you. Agust D a.k.a. SUGA (Min Yoongi* is his real name) is a South Korean rapper from the group BTS, which is debatably considered a K-POP group. What you just watched was a music from his second solo mixtape, which is K-HIPHOP, not K-POP. He started as an underground rapper, which is why he talks about rising as a dragon, for example. He and another rapper from BTS were heavily scrutinized by Korea’s Hip Hop community for becoming “Idols” and using make up on stage. IDOL(S): is a singer/dancer that debuts in the “idol industry,” that has its focus on kids and teenagers. The industry is known for being plastic and manufactured by having visuals as priority instead of talent. Although lately there has been a shift within the “formula,” which was caused by BTS, making the once plastic industry become more lyrical and meaningful. A good example of nowadays idols is Blackpink. The 3 BTS’ rappers are very into Hip Hop and have shown their respect and love for the genre and culture countless times. They are known for being quite complementary to each other, both while rapping and producing music together. I don’t want to get too into BTS’ story now, especially considering that this is a Yoongi-focused video, but knowing a bit about the group is detrimental to understand SUGA as an artist and as a person. About the video: Daechwita is a traditional Korean military musical genre generally played while marching, but specifically in this case, known for being played when the king leaves the palace. Agust D then used that to create a video based on how he felt in relation to his past self, the blond king, which represented “Agust D,” his first mixtape that happened when he had blonde hair. His present self being the black haired one, which represents his second mixtape named “D-2,” that kills his past self for getting too greedy. Funnily enough, two BTS members actually appear in this video. They’re very supportive of each other’s work. He is very against mumble rapping with no content (only talking about drugs and money), and is known for being really blunt about what he thinks. He’s also a very chill person even though he’s completely energized while performing. His artistic name, SUGA (pronounced like sugar without the ‘r’), comes from his school’s basketball team position, Shooting Guard. Although he’s not very tall, he is quite good at it. Agust D, is simply DT Suga backwards, DT being short for Daegu Town, the city he was born but also an underground group he was a part of. He’s a big Eminem fan by the way. All of BTS really like him. I’m sorry if I left anything out, that’s all I could think of for now. *In Korea, as well as some other Asian countries, your last name comes first. Therefore, his real name is Yoongi, and Min is his surname.
