Thank you to all new Patrons and 'Save the Princess' Stage 263 teaser screenshot

Hi everyone :) First of all a huge thank you to all the new patrons, if you want to message me please feel free to do so, I am very happy to hear from my fans. As previously, the Patron only stage will be released this Sunday and I'll post to code to play here on Patreon.com.
Meanwhile, I just released stage 261 to monkeyhappy.com so you can enjoy that free stage.
Just wanted to mention, I had to already delete several comments on my youtube video which posted the code to stage 260 after a bunch of people were asking for it. This doesn't upset me at all, as to me it's very humbling that people are wanting to play my games and are desperate to find the code somewhere. I am just trying to be fair to you guys who have paid and are my lifeline.
I've noticed the code is posted already in some places on the internet and I really don't have any control in taking it down. I would love to let everyone play for free but I had to go the paid route only to be able to sustain the creating of the stages into the future.
I have had a website contact me to see if I could make some kind of arrangement to release the stages at a later date, after the code has spread on the net and has become common knowledge. So I am asking you because you guys get to decide what happens.
How would you feel letting other websites post the levels with the code at a later date? After the knowledge of the code has spread on the internet. Let's say 2 weeks after release or so. I am interested to hear your opinions and I will not take any action without your guys consent.
Hi Barbara :) Thanks for your message, I know you're not a guy, it's just an expression I've gotten used to saying. It's an urban dictionary sort of thing :) Here's a link to explain: <a href="https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=you+guys" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=you+guys</a>

I'm speaking as a (back end) developer: any limit "per player" requires extra logic and maintenance in the DB. It _could_ be done, of course, but it seems to me easier to just rely on Patreon's system.
When an image is behind Patreon's paywall, it gets some credentials in the URL (so, it's not cookie-based) and you can still share it. However, with a game, there is no "Copy Image Location", which is why I'd rather opt for something like that.
The way I understand Robin, sharing with a few friends or family is no biggie, and I'd agree (although, personally, I pay double membership for one webcomic that I share with my partner). The goal, IMO, should be to prevent mass pirating, which is done by sharing the one-for-all-players code for levels that are otherwise freely available on the MGH main website.

Thank you for your answer! Naturally is your main job create stages, paid or not, and you make a good job and I love playing the stages, paid or not. I cannot believe that you are working alone. There are three kinds of stages, one is sweet seemed to be created from a lady, the second is technical and typical masculine and the third one, I like it the best, is mysterious. And finally, i'm a girl ( an old one ) and not a guy. Have a nice time and not to much troubles, Barbara

Yes you're correct Barbara, new people will have free access to older content. With the old system, if a Patron user joined a year from now they would also get all the content you've been paying for every week, which wasn't fair either. I know that it isn't completely fair for new users to get the content for free but I honestly don't think there is a way for me to completely keep the levels locked in any way. I think the main idea is that you guys are supporting my creations and I really value that :) Gaming companies spend millions of dollars to battle piracy and I am just one guy. I really don't stand a chance :( Every hour I spend on developing a system to lock the stages is a hour I am not spending on creating for you guys. I have made the walkthrough youtube video AD-FREE available to only Patrons.

do you also think of the new users coming next month or year? Now we have had 250 stages free, the next generation has perhaps 400 stages free, before they have to pay. It seems a little bit unfair, does'nt.? you have to decide, which way is better. The non-paying user get the code for the patreon-stages 2-4 weeks later without paying anything. I think, if you make the walkthrough a pay-solution for 'non-members', you can earn some money more... and it would be more fair. Have a nice day, Barbara

Thanks for the ideas Victor, the idea behind the 2 weeks is it's just enough time hold down the fort and prevent most people accessing the stage while giving my patrons exclusivity. At this stage it's not website owners sharing the code as most are decent and know I could personally contact them. I know there will be an outlier among these but I have had mostly positive experiences with bigger sites. The problem of trying to hold down the exclusivity forever is that eventually someone will just take all my graphics and animations and rebrand them as their own. I have had people from China disassemble my games, rip out my logos and buttons and release them as their own. With the games being so exclusive that only a couple of hundred people or so would be playing them, these pirates could easily get away with stealing my content and no one really even noticing.

In my opinion, monkeyhappy.com content should only be on monkeyhappy.com. It's original content, and an original webpage.
But, and yes, there's a but or to, how would you prevent other websites from sharing the levels before 2 weeks (just to use that as an example) if you can't control who shares and spreads the code throughout the internet?
I have a solution that might be handy so the code can be spread across the internet, and it is as follows:
Make a login form on monkehappy.com and make a special code for patron subscriber. Hook it up to your list of patron subscribers so you can see who has paid and who hasn't, and then each patron will get a specific code each time they login so the code can't be used on other machines. I know that people just could send their username and passwords to their friends, but I'll return as soon as I can find a way to prevent this :)

Hi Barbara, Sorry about the no reply, I started working on the new stages for now letting all the ideas run around in my head for awhile :) From what I understood the idea you spoke about was to charge for the walkthrough while giving patrons free access? That's what google translate led me to believe :) The thing with that is that other people could easily benefit by posting a walkthrough video for free and get the traffic.

you didn't answer, was it not a good idea that non-patreons have to pay, if they need the walkthrough for finishing a stage ? i wrote you 2 or 3 days ago and now i copied my idea and have send it a second time.

I agree with Nathan, when you open it make sure it's noted that this was a paid for level. Maybe put it on a timer so they can't just click past it.
Also, although i rarely use them, maybe the solution video is only posted here on Patreon.
I would also ask that website owner who contacted you to become a Patreon (if the aren't already). I am quite sure they are getting advertising revenue, so it's only fair they pay you as well.

I was thinking that if the number of plays was limited, we could request additional plays. But I guess that could be unwieldy. But maybe better to limitit to say some small number of plays, may be 5? per day.

I'm OK with it either way. The modest amount seems about right for 2 weeks of exclusive use. If you do open up the levels for free, make sure you note that it used to be a paid-for level. That might get a few of those folks joining us in supporting you. However, I do get the stance of: We paid for it, why let anyone else get it for free? For $4.00 a month, I'm not going to lose sleep over it either way. I just appreciate the levels you keep producing!

Thanks for your reply :) I hear what you are saying :) I think the problem is that if you have something of value like a song, a movie, a game and so on, and it's hidden behind a wall (log in), people will eventually take it from the original website and put it up on their own. I understand what you mean about paying. I am very grateful for you and other fans that have opened their wallets to support me on this journey. I think there will always be people who pirate stuff and I think all I can say is the people who are consuming my content and chose to support me are doing the morally correct thing and it's the principal that matters. I thank all those people from the bottom of my heart.

I hear what you are saying :) I think the problem is there isn't such a demand for one specific article that everyone wants to read. If you have something of value like a song, a movie, a game and so on, and it's hidden behind a wall (log in), people will eventually take it from the original website and put it up on their own.

While it seems inevitable that codes would leak out, I think somebody who would leak what you are providing for a VERY MODEST FEE has a lot of nerve. I hope they find themselves forever one shuriken short of a full load. I agree with Vedran that it would be good for us to be able to revisit stages; I don't dislike the freeloaders enough to cut off the ability to play these again. Perhaps a future stage could have a freeloader theme (no specific ideas on this yet), so that at the very least those of us glad to pay and support your efforts have a little joke at the cheaters' expense.

I am not in favour of releasing these levels for free. Simply put, there over 250 free levels there already, with 2 new ones every week. Plenty of free stuff, and your price is more than fair.
I like the first part of what Barbara Morris wrote: each player having their unique code. I wouldn't limit the number of uses, though. It's unfair to lock it for us who like to revisit them.
Another possibility is to upload the paid-for games to Patreon, thus using Patreon's login system. This would make it easier for us to use (no code to worry about), but it would also make it much harder to leak (one would need to share their own Patreon login details or host the game themselves, which is not impossible, but is much harder than just copy/pasting the code). This approach is quite common on Patreon: teaser linking to Patreon goes to your main site and people paying for stuff can use it, while others are more directly encouraged to go to Patreon and join the fun.
Further, this would allow you to have different stuff for different tiers in the future, should you ever decide to go in that direction. For example, I'd consider going for a $10 tier if it included a much longer level, say, once a month.

My excuses for my bad Englisch... Is there a possibility to create another website where you have to log in with your patreon account to play the game? Or in stead of a code, use the login? If you release the stages for free where the members pay for, what is the use to pay for it...

Thanks Joakim, The login solution could work if I changed the website to a wordpress site, however, I think someone would just take the game itself, remove the code and post it to their website. The games are quite easy to disassemble and I think eventually I am probably going to get a few people hacking them and repackaging them as their own. I understand what you are saying regarding the fairness, that is why I asked you guys first :) but I am starting to think that a controlled release is probably the only way to avoid people stealing my work and rebranding it as their own.

2 weeks afterwards is ok for now. But better if you think of a solution like Barbara mentioned above. One code for each patreon or a login solution. Once logged in with your e-mail and password you can play the game once then it is "used" or something like that. Someone is spreading the code and that is not fair i think. I pay for your effort AND to play extra levels ONLY for patreons.

I am also fine with releasing the level after two weeks. But I if you don't get enough Patreon subscribers, maybe you should revisit your decision. Maybe give a separate code for each level to each Patreon subscriber, so if a code gets spread to the Internet, you can track who is giving it out. Or even limit the number of times the code can be used to play the game. I would hate for you not to be able to continue creating levels at the rate you currently do!
