This was cool for what it was and, like you said, it did get a lot of peoples attention. But the MMLP... THAT is the one.

It was a new style of music with an edge and many poor white folks completely related... and then we all followed Em down the hip hop hole. It's like he gathered all the white folks and said look what we have over here! White folks were tired of punk and grunge and we're ready!!

Now I can only appreciate it for the storytelling nature of the song. This and Bonnie and Clyde. Em is an underrated story telling emcee.

2020-08-16 01:31:08 +0000 UTCSSLP sounds dated by today's standards and is 100% shock value (though if you get past that, you see the vivid storytelling, which is that album's true strength).....but you're right in realising that was what was required for a white rapper to make SO MUCH NOISE he simply couldn't be ignored. Before Slim Shady, Em was grinding for 10 whole years as a battle rapper and very strong underground presence...but no one wanted to fw him because he was white. It was automatic dismissal. Until he made the SSEP which made it's way to Dre....it captured Dre's ear precisely BECAUSE it sounded like absolutely nothing he'd ever heard and was a whole new world to explore, which excited him (Dre, at this point, was going through a tough dry spell himself and struggling to get inspired. People always forget this, but Dre was flopping and was about to be dropped from Interscope. He had one more chance to hit hard and hit big.....he took the gamble on Eminem. They entered each other's lives at the perfect time. It was like stars aligning.)

They knew exactly how massive the demographic and untapped market this would reach. Em’s 1996 album Infinite was nothing like this - and also wasn’t being heard. On Infinite, he showed what he was capable of back then and his crazy potential. Dre and Jimmy Iovine made sure the songs and content captured the demographic first and foremost, before his rhyme capabilities. Hi, My name is... There is a mini series on HBO “Defiant Ones” - 4 episodes that tell Jimmy/Dre’s story. MUST see.
