My Little Pony: The Movie

I don't know why, but this movie's ending credits section makes me cry. Like, with the Pointy Pony Style animation. I think it's because at that point I realized our little fandom was watching the show come to its conclusion. The leaks about season 9's finale were dropped weeks later, if that, and it felt strange to watch those final years unfold. Anyway, I'm four months late but I haven't done these in a while. Alicorns, truly an incredible character archetype that doesn't get a lot of direct lore, but is involved in every major plot. Divine (literally), immortal ponies who have nearly limitless power, enough to change the world, the days, the seasons, and more. But the only ponies given this power are ones who won't use it for evil (usually) I think this single movie gave us a final part to the theory of 'why are Alicorns useless in fights?' and this, coupled with the fight of Nightmare vs. Celestia in season 4's flashbacks, answered it. Civilians. They might have been able to oneshot the Storm King (imagine that tornado, but with the Four controlling it) but how many ponies would get hurt doing it? It spawned a lot of cool fics and theories and discussions, like that the royal guards of Canterlot serve to evacuate the civilians from the area, not the Alicorns. Give the big boys room to throw down a sun. Alas, the plot demands the guards be on coffee break for this movie's opening, but still it's pretty cool.

2024-08-25 02:11:37 +0000 UTCThe original creator has described them as "young adults" seeing as they live on their own (unlike actual foal characters we see such as the CMC), and some of them own and run businesses. Ponies age different than humans, for sure, but I think there is a defined period in society when they are seen and treated as adults in their world, which Twilight is. (I agree she is under more pressure than she ever would have anticipated, but I believe her to be the equivalent of 18+ throughout the series.)

2024-07-09 10:59:27 +0000 UTCThey put so much pressure on twilight and she never really asked to be a princess and she’s 16-20 (which I’ve heard from google)

2024-06-18 22:11:12 +0000 UTCShe did try to save her though. She wasn‘t just standing behind her, just before that you can see Derpy running towards Twilight. Of course, this could be just frantic running around, but I choose to view it as Derpy running to push Twilight away or similar. But yes, Rainbow was the one who actually saved her.

2024-06-17 04:09:49 +0000 UTCI agree so much with your comment. I hate how they put all the blame on Twilight and she didn’t really get an apology. Twilight trying to steal the pearl was wrong of course but she was valid. Like you said she was the last princess standing and their world and herself was in danger. Her friends caused issues and didn’t take their situation seriously. Not only was she in danger but everything that they’ve tried before they got to the hippogriffs have failed. They were running out of time and like Twilight said they can’t always dance their way out of the situations because they weren’t in Equestria anymore. Knowing that Twilight was being hunted down but still deciding to leave her alone was so stupid and she really should’ve gotten an apology for that.

2024-06-16 16:18:02 +0000 UTCAnd I know I've written half a book here. You don't have to point it out to me. If you're not interested or it's too long, just ignore it. ^^"

2024-06-16 04:29:43 +0000 UTCI admit, I am a big fan of this movie. However, what I am not a fan of is the controversial fanbase debate surrounding this film and the emotional climax. Personally, I feel that Twilight was treated somewhat unfairly in the film. So here are my thoughts on it. As the only remaining princess, Twilight is under immense pressure. She is ultimately responsible for the protection of Equestria and is also the direct target of Tempest. Her approach is therefore characterized by a strong sense of duty, as she is aware of the seriousness of the threat and feels responsible for the rescue. The other members of the Mane 6 try to help her, but they act much more carefree and take the situation less seriously, which leads to several problems in the film: Pinkie Pie in Klugetown: Her behavior draws unnecessary attention, allowing Tempest to track the group. Trust in Capper: This almost led to the group's capture. Rainbow Dash on the ship: Her reckless behavior gives Tempest clues about their current location and destination. Despite these setbacks, Twilight repeatedly brings the group back on track, leads them out of dangerous situations, and protects them. Upon arriving at Mount Aris, there is a turning point. Twilight's desperation leads to a moral misstep when she tries to steal the pearl. Due to this mistake, they do not receive the much-needed help. At this point, her friends succeed with their open approach. Consequently, they are understandably angry at Twilight and confront her about her misconduct. Here comes the emotional climax, which in my opinion is poorly written. The moment is supposed to highlight Twilight's misconduct and serve as a springboard for her character development because she hasn't shown enough trust in others and her friends. While this works to some extent, there is a problem: the behavior of Twilight's friends. No one seems to put themselves in Twilight's shoes and take her fears seriously. They show little understanding for the pressure and desperation Twilight is under. Particularly, Pinkie's accusation that Twilight is the reason for the failure and has been holding the group back the entire journey is very harsh and unfair. Aside from the fact that the other five would never have made it to Mount Aris without Twilight, this is naturally a very hurtful statement. Telling someone who feels responsible for saving Equestria and is visibly under strong emotional pressure that they are solely to blame for Equestria not being saved is not a great move. It's a bit like telling a child that they are the reason their parents are getting divorced. In general, the others ignore Twilight's thoughts and fears throughout the film. Twilight's emotional breakdown and her angry outburst are predictable and understandable, even if her words are hurtful and inappropriate. But it’s not new for someone to say something in the heat of the moment that they don't really mean. Eventually, Twilight's friends leave her, isolating her and making it easy for Tempest to capture her. (Even if they were all angry, it might not have been the best idea to leave her alone when she is being hunted…) The reckless actions of her friends ultimately lead to Equestria being saved. After the argument, Twilight realizes her mistakes and shows deeper insight by apologizing to her friends and recognizing that she has been too focused on her own plans and fears and has had too little trust in the magic of friendship and the abilities of her friends. This insight leads to the reunion of the group, and that part is well done. However, there is no reflection or insight from her friends that they should have taken Twilight's fears seriously. This is unsatisfactory to me, as it ignores her friends' misconduct and shifts the entire responsibility for the conflict onto Twilight. Additionally, this is a lesson that Twilight had already learned in the series. Think back to Tirek, where Twilight gave up all the Alicorn magic of Equestria for her friends. Or the Crystal Empire, where Twilight stepped back and trusted her friends. Oh well. And just to make that clear. I'm not complaining about the behavior of Twilight's friends, but rather that the writers didn't resolve the conflict properly. Twilight was at least able to show her reflection (on the ship she had the realization and was able to show her change in behavior when she saved Tempest instead of taking the staff) although there was no real conversation to resolve anyway.

2024-06-16 00:54:40 +0000 UTCI absolutely love this movie. I saw it in theaters 13 times and I own several copies of the physical disk, each of the variant covers. The thing that no one really notices is that Derpy did not save Twilight. She was just standing behind her when Rainbow moved Twilight out of the way. There are a few frames where you can see her rainbow light trail.
