WHOSE GONNA CARRY THE HIP HOP TORCH?
Added 2021-09-02 22:50:37 +0000 UTCI think the mount rushmore of rappers is a pretty consistent list of "older rappers" or rappers who have created a good legacy for themselves, Em, Pac, Nas, Pun, Hov, Tech N9NE etc, there's a short list of rappers that we can debate to be on that list which always seems to be more or less the same names even throughout the years. I'd say Kendrick and Cole are probably the latest generation of "lyrical" rappers that are on that list, but with most these rappers being aged out, who are we passing to torch to? I'm talkin about newer younger rappers, who we can lean on to keep "Bars" alive that have a chance in the industry, cuz "real rappers" are dying breed to the real world. I have my own list but I wanna hear from yall so we can shed some light on these soldiers.

Joyner for sure has a spot right now But honestly with the attention span of the new generation I doubt any rappers will really hold the attention of any of the younger generation for too long

After Eminem's track with them I went both down of their rabbit holes and find their content great. They're able to bring in the younger generations. Grip maybe, depends how this album does and whether the younger generation will grab onto it

Jay was cool nostalgia but lil baby can rap! Sounds good too! There's a reason the old guard are sticking him on they albums. They know he's going to get listeners. But joyner, lil baby and token are my favourite 3 not my top 5 though 👍

2021-09-03 06:23:44 +0000 UTCA lot of good names mentioned here already. To add another angle to this.. I want to mention people like Harry Mack though too. No, he's not a mainstream commercial rapper. He freestyles, but the waves he is making just keeps growing and growing. In just a year he has created a huge following for himself, and not just turning heads because of his skill, but also bringing an interest back to the true hip-hop art of freestyling and bringing attention back to rapping taking skill and practice. It's very possible that he will spark a greater interest in that lane of hip-hop and inspire a new wave of artists that push themselves to try to do what he can do, and freestyle rap might become a larger thing again and be taken more serious. Like Harry Mack or not; I know he's not for everyone, but what he is doing for hip-hop and the potential it has is definitely needed and an incredibly good thing, so we may even see new greats pop up in those lanes too if there is an interest shift in hip-hop towards that type of stuff in the mainstream. Just some thoughts anyway.

Cole and Kendrick are beasts and they also have mass appeal. I think they will continue to help cement the new school. Cordae has some more tricks up his sleeve and will surprise a lot of people.

Those who you lists will never die, I believe right now Joyner and Grip are the only ones who I see the mainstream potential in to actually carry Hip Hop. And that is because Em has given them the publicity. Tech himself is a GOAT but doesn't have the audience to bring people up the way Em does (not to minimize Tech himself).

Look at mumble rap and how much it's less it is now. There's always going to be flash in the pan acts. True lyricist will always build off of the foundation laid before them.

I remember Stevie talking about someone to bridge that gap between hip hop heads and non hip hops heads and people lime hopsin, nf etc has been in the game for a while and they don't really care about the mainstream audience, hop even said it himself.

NF is super talented, and puts more emotion into his craft than most, plus he can spit. I want to say Yelawolf, but he's been in the game for too long and he's also taking a "long break" from rap. Cole and Kendrick are there for sure. I wish LD would put out more content cuz that dude could be out here slaying right now. I'm really interested in seeing what Grip turns into. And I wish we'd got to keep Juice WRLD. That dude was a master in the making.

If you listen to what they say they got bars bars. They are nowhere as technically sound as NF or cordae but they are able to break the barrier into the mainstream audience outside of just the hip-hop heads

2021-09-02 22:57:03 +0000 UTCI honestly think ski mask has great relatability with new Gen while also keeping lyricism and bars alive, the only issue is that his bars are very pop culture referenced and for people under the age of 20 because he refers to the cartoons and movies he grew up watching, eg : yugioh and anime bars, etc.... Stylistically though he's not my favorite rapper because I can't really relate to his content cause I'm abit older. Check out his song catch me outside 143million views and his got some great flows and bars too
