UM....YOUNG EMINEM > OLD EMINEM, THOUGHTS

As I prepare these Marshall Mondays week by week, this becomes more and more clear to me. Thoughts, lets talk about it

UM....YOUNG EMINEM > OLD EMINEM, THOUGHTS

Comments

I like both

travis perrier

New Em just based off experience alone and like he said in interviews before he wouldn’t have his newest albums if it wasn’t for the one before. Not a fair comparison but I think he embodies the fine wine analogy, because he’s such a student even now and he’s a Rap God

Chris Palmer

I love em. I'm one of those people who always listened to him when I needed something. my first tape cassette was a copied MMLP that my brother owned. I listened to it all the time. But I honestly think his writing is more technical now.

Devon Martin

From jump, I've been an Em fan! I remember watching his music videos on MTV (back when MTV actually played music) and they'd have a top ten countdown while I would get ready for the bus. Old Eminem was immature, but a great rapper. So many of his songs resonated with me and I couldn't understand all of the hate he was getting, and politicians and their wives asking for censorship. Some stores wouldn't carry his music at all. I remember all of the backlash and would think of other musicians who probably deserved that more, but I remember he was a hot button topic for politicians. I supported his music, every chance I got, because I felt like he was really talented and his songs meant something to me. Additionally, his songs have gotten me through some tough situations. Newer Eminem, he's matured A LOT with his lyrics, and has gotten better over time! Not that I'm saying his first songs were awful or anything, just different. He's gotten better with age and the fact that he's revealed himself to be a former addict and everything, I feel like even more people can related to him now. I feel like his content has gotten more mature but I'm glad he hasn't lost his goofy side altogether. =) He has worked really hard and achieved a lot, and is definitely worthy of respect. Most artists who came out the same year he did, haven't made music in god knows how long, but he's still putting out hits! I mean, Dre definitely has an ear and knew what he was doing when he signed Em, no matter if they thought a white boy could rap or not. Dre didn't even know Em was white when he heard Em's demo, and because he believed in Em that much, signed him. Newer Em doesn't need Dre for beats or anything anymore, but it's still amazing when they work together! He has been one of my favorite rappers in the game, period, and continues to be! <3

Emily Scherer

Old Eminem is a mythical legendary vocalist, new Eminem is still a mythical legendary GOAT vocalist. What's so amazing to me is, how incredibly many ways of vocal sound he has had throughout his career. This is where Eminem differs from a Jay-Z much, because Jay-Z has always sounded a bit the same like always vocally. Eminem stays evolving always. For me, Eminem Show he was at his amazing vocal peak. He already showed this on The Way I Am for example on MMLP. The passion in his voice on songs like Soldier and Till I Collapse can give me straightup goosebumps to this day

SemD

I don't think it's fair to compare the old Em and new Em.... Kinda don't make sense to me

Kameika Clark

I hate this stupid argument Being an MC is a skill so after 20+ years he has mastered his craft Do I get the same feeling from his music, No but that's just Nostalgia

Stevie Mac

I think new Em would beat old Em in a rap battle. But it would be a close one though.

Hannah Is Watching

Both. Some people argue new Em is better… but if you grew up with it, like A LOT of em fans… it was a whole feeling and and era. It was just different. And the new Em, he’s just grown so much as a person and his tactical level has grown exponentially.

MssClaudine

i pick young eminem because the type of rhyme style, flow and delivery finess he had back then combined with the anger, passion and humor was perfect in my opinion

Egon

Nope. This Em can mop the floor with his young self and make him his btch. Sometimes I think it's just nostalgia people choose the young Em

Nambitious

So it JUST occurred to me that Medicine Man and Best Friend were both released in 2015, which led me to some more thoughts. They were released ~100 days apart. In between their releases, Phenomenal & Kings Never Die were released. A year before that, SHADYXV released (including Right for Me, SHADYXV, and Fine Line). A year before THAT, the MMLP2 dropped, which included Bad Guy and Rap God. Given the Best Eminem Verse challenge and the high ranking/praise of many of those songs in that challenge, this makes a strong argument that Eminem's prime--in terms of laying his "best" verses (verses that check all the boxes)--falls between 2013 & 2015.

Ricky St. Augustine

😭😭😭why he didn't leave orignal Venom alone, I heard this new remix of it on Spotify and that isn't it. Sounds awful, like some random remix from youtube, Rick Ruben was right you can't put Em on different beat, he's flows are married to beats, I can't with this old man why he do this 😭😭😭

cathy

I prefer his young and recovery stage as far as sound and song quality goes. I did really enjoy kamikaze. His rap technique is still flawless, I just don't like how he sounds on newer tracks. His venom 2 track, and some of his other more recent tracks sound like he's trying to put a tone and choppyness to appeal to the audience who are mumble rap fans. I just prefer the em that puts the hunger, grit and emotion into his tracks.. Not the tracks that are the most mainstream that could be radio material. I really liked the first venom track the way it sounded down to his tone, flow and the beat. The features and the hook didn't match either. The new movie was good too.

Aaron Rush

New Eminem for sure. Kamikaze brought me back into the scene. After E show I felt like something was missing. So glad he found it again!

Dustin Corbitt

This is a great question/battle. I love both old Em and new Em for different reasons. Old Em had that big chip on his shoulder, the hungry young artist trying to make it out of Detroit. New Em is more wise and experienced and a lot more thoughtful than he used to be. I think the best way for me to show how I feel about this question is to just rank the albums, lol. 1. Eminem Show 2. MMLP 3. MTBMB 4. SSLP 5. MMLP 2 6. Revival 7. Kamikaze 8. Infinite 9. Recovery 10. Encore 11. Relapse I will say: Em's two most recent features are a perfect blend of old and new him. I hope his next album sounds like this!

Dylan Grunwald

Old ems a better artist New ems a better rapper. We all win. 💯

Colin Harris

I agree with those above saying Old Em is better technically with his word play and such, but young em had a passion and grit that was intoxicating.

Richard Overholt

I mean people compare Old Drake to New Drake all the time

GhostlyRipper

The passion and youthful rage in songs like these below. Will never be matched. The way i am Til i collapse Soldier If you grew up listening to em during his younger days - and even if you didn’t. - The Eminem show was his absolute peak.

J Cole

I’d say relapse.

steven

Every artist with at least a decade of material I'd say lol....

kikoolol

This is why we need a SSLP live stream. The young sleep was less technical but his talent was so raw and unique. It’s what made him blow up, in mi opinión

David Gonzalez

I just think it's impressive that this is a question that can even be asked! I mean...how many artists can you realistically pose this question for a debate? It's pretty crazy when you think about it...

scamrasc

I think that's the norm for most artists, because the creativity tends to be highest when they're starting out and have more to talk about and explore. It's difficult and rare for artists to continue growing and reinventing their sounds....few can do it. However I think THE BIG difference is that Em when he was young was HIGHLY emotional, whereas older Em is more cerebral. He was damaged and abused and ferocious, and he used music as his outlet to navigate everything he had to deal with and survive through. He always said it was his therapy. He also always said that he never foresaw how huge he would be, and his life turned into a circus show whirlwind that had him and everyone around him on the news 24/7....it was too much....and he came to realise his transparency and antics were hurting the lives of people around him he cared for. Since he came back, post OD, he's been much more careful and reserved of what information he allows the public to have. He's selective, and notoriously protective of his private life. As a result, he doesn't pour so much of his heart into his music as he once did (at least the music he releases for the public - man could fill an Island with his unreleased work) and focuses on MENTAL stimulations instead of emotional. (There are obvious exceptions to this, but I'm talking generally as a whole). I also think as he's grown older and worked on himself a lot (particularly when battling his addictions) he's worked through a lot of that pain that was driving him, and is NOW a healthier person. He strikes me as someone who privately has his shit together pretty well tbh. Like, he could still be triggered into that old mentality, but he doesn't LIVE IN it as a trigger-happy mf walking on a wire anymore.

scamrasc

The comeback Em, that recovery era was a perfect blend of Old/New. That run is untouchable

Cam Alexander

I strongly disagree with the idea that new Em doesn’t make good songs anymore and is just a better rapper technically. I don’t like the narrative that all of his new production is trash, because I like it (not every single song, but most). He has changed style multiple times and every style might not suit everyone. Despite what people think they might want, he can’t go backwards. Bottom line for me is I actually find myself replaying way more new Em, and not just to dissect bars. It’s because I love the songs.

RachelMD

Young Em made better music.

Steve

Really hard to say becouse i like both. Sometimes i like to go back to the twisted relapse vibes Sometimes them bar heavy songs ,serieus songs. Its Just great that theres a lot to choose!😉 but shady made the man.

Bas

Jimmy McMinn only Ems commercial hits were really that poppy way, young Em sounded wayyy more hip hop back then. Soldier, till i collapse, the way I am, like toy soldiers etc was far more hip hop. Now he's making songs like tone deaf and stepdad etc, 80% of his new music sonically is horrendous but his lyricism is way more complex.

Colin Campbell

Talent Wise: Old Em Vibe, Hunger wise: Young Em It's like they are both perfect.. in a different way..

Joe Asfour

Its subjective asf lol just like all these list/top 10's or the polls you see ..everyone has a opinion & they all gonna vary so i usually go wit mine lmao..n wit Em for me he always has been & still is a beast 👿 he has grown & evolved because thats what humans /artist..if he was still rapping like mad broke Em that would be a lie ..bcuz he not neither nomore lmfao..n its 20 yrs later..literally..but like I said above reading these comments idk..i kinda see what ppl be mean bout Em stans🙇‍♀️ glad Im not in that box 💯

MimiLoveee♡

Where is the line between old an new Em? Is it recovery?

Maurice Verschuren

35!

Dall24

I gotta say reading these comments is a trip lol & further confirmation my mind jus different 💯

MimiLoveee♡

Your name Aziz lol n you saying that too damn funny🤣

MimiLoveee♡

Im curious how olr are you?

MimiLoveee♡

I still pretty much know and can (badly) sing along to his old music, but his last few albums/features/verses just appeal to me more. The fact we're comparing him to himself though speaks volumes in my opinion. Love to you and the family.

Michael Bruce

As far as musicality and emotion, it's not even close Young Em>>Old Em. I can see why some people think he's better technically now, but I prefer Young Em. Old Em still has those tools inside of him, but he doesn't quite manage to put it all together as good as Young Em did.

Dall24

Em is so polarizing that he really is hard to compare. Young em Vs old Em is perfect example but skillfully he's better but young had better replay value, according to most. Now my question is, can we really old Em as if he was a new artist? It's hard to really put aside his greatness as a young rapper that blew the top off.

Greg Rios

New eminem is more talented, better than ever, but the old eminem will always have that nostalgia of the 90s/00s as well as the hunger and anger

JordanoLee

Old eminem for the 00s beats, the anger, the absolute disregard for anyone and anything. That's my favourite Eminem, the MMLP Eminem, the D12 Devils Night Eminem. New Eminem is now a God of his craft and can make headlines by how good his penmanship is. The evolution is insane, he truly is the greatest to ever do it, there's nothing he can't do in this game.

lukeslayer

I personally have an eclectic mix of both new and old Em. It depends on my mood. I think it is great for an artist to have a diverse catalogue that you get to pick and choose songs that fit your specific mood. I like the recklessness of his old music and the storytelling. But some of the newer songs just hit me different, and I feel like I need that complexity sometimes when listening. For example, my top 5 Em songs on my playlist are: 1. Sing for the moment 2. Believe 3. Guts Over Fear 4. No Regrets 5. Kill you - that list just shows how you sometimes need both Ems in life. One is not necessarily better than the other, they are just different.

razan saher

I think new Em has some great songs that reach me directly but He obviously has more older songs than newer songs. Going through the comments it seems about even as far as everyone liking something from his new music down to his first album and he is just getting started with the "new" Em. He still has 2 songs coming with Kid Cudi and There's talks about more Album's going to drop so if that's the case new Em could take the race!! I think he will at least drop 2 more since MTBMB was signed by Slim Shady. He will have one with Marshall Mathers and an album with Eminem IMO.

Danny Pratt

You trying to tell me that cleaning out my closet, my name is, (insert radio hit here) are messing with songs on MTBMB and their double and triple entendres with no filler. On top of songs that are complete double and triple entendres. I.E. Darkness, Never Love Again. I guess it depends on what you want to hear in hip hop or how you measure what's good. They are all good music to me and have a place in history, but the growth is evident!

Jimmy McMinn

Young Em made more songs that were radio songs or commercial hits. Even his Slim Shady songs had a more pop boppy sound to them. Current EM is pushing the envelope and making music that is for hip-hop heads.

Jimmy McMinn

Young Em has songs i still listen to tkll this day dating back to 96, now when Em releases a song ill listen to it for a couple days then never again. Morals of the story is young Em had replay value, older Em just doesn't for me but in terms of technical ability Old Em definitely excels in that aspect.

Colin Campbell

I honestly listen to WAY more new Em than old. 09+ is 90% of my playlist. His SO dynamic now (flows, vocals, rhyming, etc) that he just entertains me. That said, I don't like song he makes.

Liviakai

My teen sons like new Em more than old. My 15 years old Top 5 are all 09 and up. That said, they aren't angry, rebellious,, and didn't grow up in the MMLP era, so have no nostalgia

Liviakai

i would say younger em made better music

Aziz Almulla

Who makes better music?

Gregory Knight

i can apriciate both.. the young Em with more shoking and vicerous lyrics and stupid flows from SSLP to Relapse (Fun, Crazy, Hungry EM)and the new EM with better rhyme schemes, layers and deeper lyrics and way more unorthodox flow Recovery to MTBMB!! (Concious, complex and still hungry EM) Young Em make u pump and all... but ,aybe bc i'm more older now i love and apreciate the Older EM with complex doubles/Trip more on the lyrics and how he bend the words!!!

Peu Oliver Guimarães

If you're asking about a young EM VS old EM for a versus then yes I really think he's the only rapper you can compare him to (WITH ANY CONSISTENCY). BUT, if you're saying you think younger eminem was better, YOU ARE TRIP TRIPPING.

Chris Brown

is it young vs old or new vs old??? lol

Kurram Javed

I like listening to both new and old Eminem… imo old Em is more impactful but new Em is the better rapper

TW1G N1NJ4

I like both, really. I admit I didn't listened to MMLP2 &Revival much when they were released, the beats kinda put me off and I was a lazy listener. And there was an era where he seemed to force/yell on a few songs which i rarely listen to. Around 2010 i think. His first 3 were def classics, but find myself listening more to his newer stuff, then his older albums, I like the more complex Em that we hear now😊Comparing his first 3 albums w his last 3,it isn't even fair, they all are awesome for different reasons IMO.

Nicole Kali

Your ears must be broke 🤣

MimiLoveee♡

I disagree. I think Em has become more and more and more talented as the years go on and as he continues to hone his craft. He's so far down his artistic road now that people who also share success along the same road have trouble comprehending what he's doing. You hear it tho, when Crook or Busta or Royce talks about Em's music. The dudes who are on or near Em's same level have said more than once that he's better than he's ever been, and I agree. I think technically speaking, at the art or rap, Em is better than he's ever been. The entire notion that we're here comparing his old vs his new is proof positive of that to me. Just listen. LISTEN to the intricacies that man puts into every rhyme. I think he's become harder for some folks to listen to because he's transcended what some people are capable of keeping up with so it seems like he's falling off, when actually he is just barring so hard that our mortal minds can't process it right. Just my take.

Matthew Shaker

Thats how mind set up but im cut from a cloth dats sold tf out lol 👆 me & da same age we think n act dif then mfs these days n last generation or so..not all but most ..but yeah if I like a artist i jus enjoy n rock wit em 🤷‍♀️ ion really compare them to them or do the they fell off thing..jus like we have bad days they gone have bad songs/projects..we humans lol.None us perfect..but like i said i think dif 💃

MimiLoveee♡

Literally 👆 im a day 1 & you sum'd it up 💯

MimiLoveee♡

Lol @ no emotion/hunger

Nicole Kali

I'm just blessed to be able to listen to both of them got something for any mood you're in

Brad Martindale

His music has gotten hard to listen to, he got more technical with his rapping but there's no emotion or hunger anymore and the production is all over the place

Payton

Eminem is GOAT no matter what, me personally though I prefer from kamikaze on, everything else was great as well, but after kamikaze and hearing more in depth lyrics I was able to appreciate his older music even more, because as a kid he was still my favorite but I couldn't explain or understand it... now I feel like I can

Joel Rogers

If I didn't grow up with the old Em, I wouldn't understand the new Em. I've developed my hip hop ear, as he evolved. I enjoy his complex writing and him as a artist. It's like asking me if I like my kids now or before more? I just love them.

SlapYo Mama

Old Eminem is better on a technical level but young Eminem made better songs and was still nice on the mic. His production and overall song quality has gotten worse

Trenton Leblanc

They are both good in their own way. Just depends on what you are a fan of. Personally, I'm a fan of good music and talent and I feel like he's always had it. Early years were more fun, humor in songs and Slim Shady was a TINY BIT more controversial and he did focus more on making songs (radio hits). Current Eminem is more technical, having fun with different pockets, experimenting with featuring with different types of artists and he doesn't care about the commercial success as much. All together Early EM + Current EM = Longevity, Growth, Checking Boxes that just add to his overall resume. I almost don't even think you can compare the 2 as we have literally watched the evolution of an artist before our eyes. Most artists reach a point and lose their creative drive or just have nothing else in them. We haven't seen that with Eminem yet.

Jimmy McMinn

Obviously both Eminem are great but I prefer the 2010-13 Eminem to listen to. His early stuff is amazing but he's gotten to the point where his pen overrides the musicality so his songs don't have as much replay value as the used to

GhostlyRipper

Yeah. Don't get me wrong Eminem's first few albums are nostalgic and have some of my favorite songs by him but alot of my favorite songs by him have been more recent too. For example infinite, role models, the way I am, hailies song, mockingbird, beautiful, no love, legacy, river, the ringer, Godzilla and Zeus all some of my favorite songs and each of those are from different albums. There's no new Eminem there's just Eminem 💯

Tha Creator

I completely agree, just Enjoy him! Appreciate the journey he has taken us through. The G.O.A.T.

SlapYo Mama

Love the old Eminem but I prefer the Eminem 2.0

Plain_23

This is tough. I like all the phases and watching the growth of Eminem. I personally can't choose on which one I like best. I've been there since Eminem came out. So to me just do an old song vs a new one. You will not get everyone on board saying old vs new.

D Adams

I am biased. I was 12 when I heard the MMLP and it just felt so God damn different. Nothing will change that nostalgia I get when I listen to the public service announcement 2000 and kill you. Also listen to he shouting out "AMERICA !" it just gives me chills. Beside that... Technically new Em is way better... And now that I am older as well... I appreciate him being a grown up and still showing his goofy side. I just can connect to all his dad joke like bars from time to time :)

balabub

You should do a old em song vs a new em song do both in the same video that would be a dope idea

EvFamilyEnt

Old Eminem

Matt Woods

Literally what i said above..trying to pick whats best bout the best is weird to me lmaooo

MimiLoveee♡

New Eminem, I know best 👌

Walter Barnaba

I see your point. Personally I really enjoy breaking down complex bars and seeing just how crazy verses can get. But if I’m putting some Em on to vibe it’s probably gunna be his old shit

Dakota Austinson

I just like Eminem period! To me there ain't a new Eminem it's just Eminem doin different things.

Tha Creator

New em is dope, but no one will ever top 1999-2005 Eminem.

Finicher

I love them both i refuse to pick lol 👆 im literally a Em day 1 from Detroit..still here..same age as him so when I say day 1 I mean day 1 like battle rap days day 1..both & all are dope, amazing n unmatched all 20 yrs 🐐 thats my answer My faveee 💯💯💯

MimiLoveee♡

Maybe from a super technical aspect, but rap isn't a computer system. There has to be a FEEL. Old Eminem also had better delivery, content, passion, etc all that plays into a better rapper .This is what Tyler was saying when he said Eminem got too technical for his own good. It's not enjoyable to a lot of people anymore.

M Salam

Give me CURRENT Em!!! I like the puzzles. With that being said I do miss him being really pissed, now he’s just having fun fucking with us…

Scott Calder

I love old Em he has classics. With that being said, I find myself listening to the New Em way more than than the young Em

Ivan Morales

Old EM’s music was more digestible and you could vibe With it more since the beat selection was better. New em is a better rapper but Maybe not a better artist. I thini em said something like ”writing has become easier But rapping has become more difficult.”.

Kreshnik Raca

We've been telling you this forever lmao.

M Salam

Both, i enjoy all his stuff, encore has some stuff im not a fan of but besides that its all good!

Tony Friesen

Young eminem vs old eminem

Gregory Knight

Young eminem vs old eminem

Gregory Knight

New Em for me. I enjoyed Kamikaze and MTBMB a lot more than his older stuff. Not to say his old stuff isn’t good but the new Em goes stupid hard

Purav

Old Eminem just hit you different, some new flows and lyrics blow my mind but the raw emotion, beat selection, and structure of his verses/song of old Em is just too good

Hunter Velicer

Old Eminem will always be special to me because it’s what got me into music, specifically hip hop, and I was so young when I started listening. But I listen to new Em more often, his songs have gotten more personal and relatable throughout the last decade or so, he raps better than ever now. I just vibe with new Em more.

Mark Williams

Plus I could rap every word to his old shit, his new shit far to complex for me to try keep up 🤣

Steve Green

I'm confused...I thought Stevie preferred Em's more recent work?

Ricky St. Augustine

New em is more polished better flows and probably better all round but old em was raw and more feeling to it , just had such a vibe hard as Fuck to Pick but gotta be old em for me, it's close as fuck thou

Steve Green

I'm confused... the old aged eminem is better then the younger eminem? Is that the statement?

Brad

New Eminem is a better rapper. Old Eminem is a better artist. I prefer Recovery-now Em, but that's what I've grown up with.

Craple Magelus

Fine Line Vs If I Had!

Dan Duxbury

I prefer the newer stuff, more complex bars and cadences to catch every time you repeat a song

Sean Rector

I mean he constantly got better at the lyrical level over time but the beat selection and over all style of old Em is just different.

Dakota Austinson

*incoming non open minded Eminem fans*😂
