I took so long to respond I am now afraid the answer will not live up to the build-up =x The difficulty was to not ramble and keep things simple, I hope it translates. First: Thank you for reminding me to do more of that, since Gallery pics tend to be smaller in scope I tend to push through the process quicker and not take snapshots at different stages of completion! Second: The idea of shape language is appropriate to describe what is happening when you have iterated enough to be able to rely on abstract elements to communicate meaning. By that I mean, you are not being descriptive like you would be breaking down the physics and coordinates that something occupies in space, you tap into your own vocabulary to tell the viewer’s brain “this is what you are looking at”. Everyone’s artistic vocabulary is unique, some are good at deriving underlying rules that they can share with others, and some, like me, can’t really make enough sense of it to explain why a shape feels good and another feels bad. This is why unfortunately I can’t provide a structured response as to my approach to simplifying form, beyond the general idea that less things can go wrong when you make sure the core shapes are communicating the right broad dynamics and you work downwards into subdivisions. I guess the philosophy of animation serves that principle well, give the eye something bold to latch onto, big curves, sharper angles that evoke life and movement, then break down these big shapes into smaller bits, even if it’s not part of a sequence your picture will have a flow to it. Mind you, none of this comes naturally to me and I find my style much too tied down by realism still! Third: My line art thought process: I see myself as an aspirant inker, the meat of what I draw should ideally already be there before I apply values. It’s always been my quest! I work Digital only so I struggle to get the right amount of grit and I consistently switch tools, but lately I’ve been using an oversized Mapping Pen in CLIP Studio. If it doesn’t come naturally, I think a lot of character can come from restricting the potentially infinite flexibility of digital tools, my way of achieving that is to use a big fat brush that I have to be rather subtle with. I can’t be super precise so I make mistakes, but it’s the right kind of mistakes, those I can keep because they feel organic. Otherwise my sketch to lines process is quite thorough, I don’t ink from a very loose base but I don’t like to push it too much either. Damn, that was so concise and to the point wasn’t it...

No I totally get why you would prefer more obscure stuff! We've been hearing about the same wars since middle school so its nice to explore new territory. Thanks for the Jacques recommendation!

For single pics in a figure format there would be more leeway, but I can be roped in with lesser known conflicts like the Crimean war of the 1850s or forgotten war fronts for example, like I said, I'm a bit of a hipster =)

First! Thank you for showing more of your wip. Second! I would love to know more about the shapes you use aka simplify forms. Third! Whats your line art thought process, Are you following traditional line art process or doing your own style of line art and what brush you use to do it?

Great War Wives is at the conjunction of a few things I'm interested in as you probably guessed, muscle girls, opportunity to draw gritty stuff and the rarely explored look and feel of WW1 as a setting. I was motivated to start putting out things around that idea when I accepted to contribute to Neo-Queendom and had to deliver a piece with an original character, Marianne V1 was born ! You don't see much of WW1 in wider popular culture because it doesn't resonate as much with American audiences, but in France there is definitely quite a bit more of that obviously as the western front was basically our living room. I am a big fan of Jacques Tardi who has put out a lot of comics on the subject, with a drab, cynical approach but also a very gritty black and white style that resonated with me. I also find the transitional aspect of technology and warfare at the time very interesting, uniforms still have XIXth century pomp, equipment is rough and not optimised, innovations come in bizarre forms before settling into enduring designs (machine guns etc.). It's quite the challenge to use these elements and make them outrageous and Pulpy on my big girls, but it's fun . GWW is more of a concept that I run circles around and I don't have plans to develop a story or anything concrete right now, so there is no roadmap for updates but it is still very much my favorite « project » for sure. I am also fond of WW2 era stuff but I don't feel there's as much space to explore, there's so much brilliant stuff that has been done, call me a hipster but I don't think I have anything of value to add !

id like to ask if you have any plans on posting drawing videos in the future? as a big fan of your current artstyle i'm very curious to see your drawing process .

I've always loved physically imposing female characters, loved them in media, played female characters wherever possible etc. Manga is where I started to see buff women being presented as appealing and it struck a nerve, when I pushed my art I also began to understand muscle as a great way to play around with anatomy, use interesting shapes and draw characters that broke norms in spectacular ways while remaining desirable (GreatSix's work is unparalleled in that department). It's not particularly a good thing but stringing muscles together is how I build up figures, even when there should be plenty of fat layered on ! It's still a niche thing (much less than before though) and I'm ok with that but I agree that a lot of female designs could do with more visual cues for physical strength.

I am not very generous with WIPs and sketches as I'm pretty insecure about them and think they more often than not look like shit ! I have made an effort to show some of them lately and will keep doing so as much as possible. My style is directly inspired by manga (and my recent shading tendencies from older anime) because it's my preferred approach to extract maximum appeal from representations of the human body as well as visceral action, essential components for my chosen subject matter ! I grew up reading mainly Franco-Belgian Comics with a bit of manga, later delving deeper into the latter as well as discovering American comics. There are things to love in those three spaces but while I appreciate all of them in different ways, manga is the « language » I enjoy the most when I draw (although I believe I'm shoving a lot of non-manga bits and pieces in the mix more and more!)

GreatSix/DairokuTenmaouGreat who has I believe managed NQ since the start contacted me in 2019! Japanese artists are often quite curious and interested in Westerners who are invested in Doujin style content, along with NDC and a few other muscle girl artists we were asked if we wanted to contribute . We did a few times and kept communications up until Covid hit, Comiket (the huge Tokyo doujin market events in Summer and Winter) didn't happen and the whole scene slowed down as it was the biggest outlet. NQ had two issues per year, one per event and 2021 was likely the last year anyways as GreatSix had decided to retire from the project after carrying it for more than a decade. I don't actually know what the status of the project is right now but if he wants to make one more issue for a proper send off I'm likely to participate =) Participation in anthologies and the likes are really for fun on my end so I'm not going out of my way to seek them out, moreover it's tough to communicate with Japanese artists in general which makes collabs tricky. No plans!

What got you drawing muscle girls? Many artists unfortunately don't bother drawing muscular frames for women, so you're a rare breed.
