Comments

Only just watching this but please react to the outtakes of this and the extra songs

Honey

I’m back on Bo so I’m rewatching this YEARS later!

Jennifer Cash

back to this for like the 5th time haha

luviemoo

It’s august 16th and I’m rewatching this for the 3rd time lmao

Mikayla McCord

I did not see this until now!!! I'm so happy you found Bo. His comedy is pretty much all music, it's so great. You HAVE to watch "art is dead" and continue from there... you'd love the messages in most of his stuff.

This is a really late comment but I didnt realize you had reacted to this until now. So, Bo Burnham has been making music based comedy for a long time, starting with YouTube when Youtube just started. He made funny songs for his family and friends and they went viral. I remember being in highschool (around 2008) and listening to "New Math", "I'm Bo Yo." And "Rehab for Fictional Characters" on my zune because I tormented the audio files off of youtube haha. His song Problematic was talking about how his music that he made at such a young age was edgy and hes really embarrassed by it, and going back and listening too it it was shock value jokes. Bo has always "went there" even as a kid, but now he makes fully formed decisions on what he wants to actually say instead of just coming up with really clever rhymes that make people gasp. When he started doing live shows and comedy specials, you could tell that he had started a war in his mind about the music he was making. He has always been very blunt about his mental health in his specials. He always frames it in a way that's like... hes making a joke .. but I feel bad for laughing... but hes so creative and artistic about it that I feel like this needs to be appreciated. Hes the kind of person who thinks himself in circles to try to find the right answer. I think you should watch Make Happy. That stand up will give you a lot of context to Bo and Inside as well. I have grown up with Bo, so its fascinating to watch someone watch inside for the first time with no context to who Bo is and how he performs.

Booryanne

This was really cool. I think you might like James Acaster's specials as well, some of which are on Netflix.

Throughout Bo’s comedy career he definitely addresses his self awareness a lot, even in his material like 10 years ago in his song “art is dead.” Make Happy is a great special and I would definitely recommend, at the very least the last two songs to get more context and further appreciate this special (can’t handle this and the following final song, which is set in the same room as inside). Also some people already commented this but phoebe bridgers and bo are friends and she did a cover of “that funny feeling” which makes it a bit more haunting (also after this special came out last year there were also a bunch of musicians on tiktok that added their own lyrics to that song which really added to its impact for me)

I had never watched any Bo Burnham before quarantine. When this came out, my sister watched it and then immediately texted me and said it was worth watching. I watched it maybe a month after it came out. Like you said, feelings were so raw and it was SO relatable. A lot of the songs became very popular sounds on TikTok and I feel like the world was inundated with these very raw and realistic feelings that we collectively felt. I enjoy all of your videos, but they hit way more when you have cover videos and songs I have known or seen before. I love getting to look at some of my favorites through a new lens. We appreciate what you do :)

Or even just his whole Netflix special MAKE HAPPY!

Happy to see you reacting to Bo! Would also love to see you react to his Kanye rant - Can’t Handle This from MAKE HAPPY

Phoebe Bridgers does a cover of That Funny Feeling and it is one of my favorites!

RE white woman's instagram YES! its super relatable! but also i think its interesting because it seems to be a single woman's instagram he's talking about. She posts the picture with the 27 balloon and then the post about her mom (and did you catch "mom I love you give a hug and kiss to dad?" so it sounds like both her parents have passed) where she talks about the boyfriend she's crazy about and the job she loves, then the picture of the CEO shirt and the line about "a ring on her finger from the person that she loves". I think this was a really creative way of telling us what we all know, that social media isn't real and is only a tiny snapshot of what's going on in someone's life. Plus the EFFORT that goes in to getting some of those shots?? Bo was dedicated to this one!

i think you'd LOVE his older work! You should check it out if you get a chance. "art is dead" is sort of his OG and is wonderful, the Kanye Rant is iconic, basically they're all excellent.

I‘ve enjoyed watching this with you so much, it really means a lot to me and i watched it constantly after it came out and I, as always, really enjoyed your takes on everything!! To suggest something different of Bo‘s work, he‘s also been in the movie ‚Promising Young Woman‘ which I can recommend in every aspect and I‘d LOVE if you considered watching it on here if you haven‘t seen it yet, I think this movie is outstanding and Bo is also a part of that. As always i‘m happy with anything you post and thanks so much for the lot and diverse content ❤️❤️

Clarissa

phoebe did a cover of that funny feeling!!! it's literally so ethereal & gorgeous, definitely check that out 💙

taylor

I just want to comment that I loved the reaction video and also you should hear Phoebe Bridgers’ cover of That Funny Feeling https://open.spotify.com/track/30y5OpD8TPAru2wsyZDD4S?si=Hp5PibT8Sn6IH0tiyyjyKQ or watch Bo reacting to her covering it at a show: https://youtu.be/BK77Kbya8eY

I’ve been hoping for awhile that you’d do some gaming!! Can’t wait!! Those are my fave videos to relax to & you’re my favorite creator 💝

Lucille

oh, and the White Woman's Instagram song ended up becoming a tiktok trend where people would make videos showing how many of the posts Bo mentions they have on their accounts lol so yes, it is relatable

I've really admired Bo for years now; his special Make Happy really stayed with me when it came out in 2016, and then when this special came out I felt really seen. I think that he's so thoughtful and insightful. His other stuff is 100% worth checking out. I'm so happy that I got to rewatch this with you! His comedy has always been primarily a musical delivery, so this actually isn't a huge change for him other than the context and that obviously he's grown up and has matured. I hope you go through some more of his work on the channel. Thank you for sharing, Michael!

This special is something. I have anxiety and it really struck me. My husband doesn’t and he didn’t get any of it 😂 the first time I watched this I was on a month long quarantine with my toddlers and husband because he had covid in his workplace. I was already starting to have a mental breakdown from being forced to stay in our home for so long. I watched this in the middle of it and ended Up actually having an anxiety attack 😬 but man it’s such a good special! He’s a deep guy so all his “jokes” have such a deeper meaning than you’d realize! I’ve listened to him since he was just on YouTube. This special hits harder when you know all his mental health issues and have seen his comedy evolve over time.

I think something that's key to understanding Inside is what he explains in All Eyes On Me about almost quitting comedy after having panic attacks and dealing with depression during his Make Happy shows (that special is also on netflix and it's amazing too) so I think the recurring idea in this special is the fact that he went into "hiding" for a couple of years and when he finally decided to "go outside" (come back to the entertaining industry) he was met with quarantine and it's almost like he got what he "wanted" which turned out to be even worse for him. I think there are a couple songs that address that, like in Look Who's Inside Again "Well, well, Look who's inside again, went out to look for a reason to hide again. Well, well, Buddy, you found it" or That Funny Feeling "Full agoraphobic, losing focus, cover blown" and obviously All Eyes On Me. I always thought that the mom post in White Woman's Instagram was a way to remind us (after seeing all these superficial photos and captions) of the fact that behind every one of these accounts is a real person who is also struggling and dealing with their own stuff... Actually, idk if you noticed but that's the only part of the song where the image size ratio isn't 9:16 (like an ig story) so to me it's like we're literally stepping out of the social media persona and getting a little more real. As always I loved watching this with you!! Bo's comedy and music is amazing and this special is one of my favorite pieces of cinematography.

macri parada

so happy you reacted to this, one of my favs! Bo ended up in my top 5 most listened to artists last year since the songs are available to listen to on their own 😂

Allison V

So glad you started going down the Bo rabbit hole! It's gonna be a ride for sure lol. To answer your question, yes, music has always been apart of his specials because that's how he started on YouTube. In 2006 he posted a song he did called "my whole family thinks I'm gay" for his older brother at college to see. Then he posted more and more songs, and became viral very quickly, which was probably overwhelming for him being so young. Since you started with his latest special, you could always work your way backwards with his other ones. You should do "Make Happy" next, then ".what" which are both on Netflix! And then his first one "Words, Words, Words" which you can find on Paramount+ There's also a lot more than his specials too! He wrote and starred in one season of a TV show on MTV called "Zach Stone is Gonna Be Famous", it's on Netflix so def check that out! I think that would be a fun Patreon reaction. He also wrote and directed the feature film "Eigth Grade" which he won awards for.

It'd be impossible to say everything i want to say about it, so I'm just gonna leave this here https://youtu.be/UvYcunuF3Eo

^^ in regards to my first comment, phoebe covered "that funny feeling" and put it on bandcamp, and all of the proceeds went to multiple texas abortion care funds, due to the recent strict laws in place for abortions in texas. it's since been released on streaming services as well. it's so so amazing. there's a great video of bo watching phoebe sing that funny feeling live and he looks so confuzzled yet happy about it lol

nikki

MICHAEL!!!! you have to listen to phoebe bridgers cover "that funny feeling"!!!!, especially since you just did "punisher". her cover is absolute perfection. when you sit on the lyrics of that song it's absolutely incredible, and phoebe's dark magic voice lends itself to the darkly poetic and ironic, yet softly hopeful sound so well. loved the reaction and i was actually thinking of you reacting to "inside" like 4 months ago when i myself watched it for the first time. i wondered why you hadn't, or if you had just watched it on your own time. i was so excited to get this notification!!

nikki

Welp no sleep for me tonight! 😅
