Watching From Nobodies to Legends today of all days had me extra emotional. Last night was their Busan concert, which was 100% free to attend and stream. Seeing how far they've come is almost unbelievable, but they still have the same drive and ideals as day 1. Thank you for another great set of reactions!! (I also adore First Burn, I've probably listened to it more than the original version!!)

Hey Michael so towards what you were saying about tickets, if you miss a chance to get a BTS ticket I recommend looking for some trusted ARMY group pages. When BTS's Vegas concerts first went on sale the tickets all solded out on the first day, which was release only the the ARMY's who had a BTS yearly membership(If your interested for when BTS go back on tour, it's only like $25-30 a year). I had the membership, but I messed up my registration so I had to wait for the next day. As I mentioned, they sold out that first day so I thought it was over. I'm a part of a Colorado BTS ARMY facebook group and a woman was selling her extra tickets, one of which was going to be right next to her and her daughters. She was selling it at face value and even dropped it a little because we were both from Colorado. It was the best experience!!! They were the nices people, plus she made a custom BTS in Vegas sweater for all of us to were! And I crocheted some little purple whale keychains for her and her two daughters!
Also it's risky, but you can wait until much closer to the concert days because scalpers will start to get desperate to sell and drop back to a more reasonable price.

I hope Michael reads this because this is so true. The Korean media/industry treated them really badly. But it makes sense why, sadly, but because bts succeeded without the help of these companies, so these companies couldn’t make any money from bts. Thus, they just pushed bts down since it wasn’t benefiting them financially. Politics and money really makes my blood boil.

It makes me so happy to see you listen to Muna! They are so good! They opened for Harry Styles on his very first tour. I discovered them through that tour and I've seen them twice since then. You should DEFINITELY listen to more! A couple of my favorite songs are "Loudspeaker" and "Stay away" but you really can't go wrong.

The thing about BTS is that their music is already extremely compelling and comforting on its own, but getting too know them as a group, and their relationship dynamics as smaller units + personalities as individuals adds so much context and color to the music :) Glad you were able to see the most searched interview and get a taste of that and i hope you continue to explore that side of them in the future, its a very rewarding, fun and endearing endeavor!

Now I feel like I'm having a conversation with you and spamming the comment section 😅, but I can't help it! you're point was too good -- the pressure they are under. The falling stock prices from BTS's announcement led to Korea's National Pension Service to losing over $100 million dollars in investments. SM, JYP and YG (for those unfamiliar, the 3 biggest entertainment companies in SK outside of BTS's own [Hybe]), lost a combined $450 million. Hybe themselves lost $1.7 billion in the market value of their stocks. The New York Times's headline was "BTS Ponders its Future, and SK's economy warily takes note." South. Korea's. economy. 7 men.
I can't imagine that level of pressure.
Also, I wanted to add that in my above comment I praised their vulnerability and kindness.... then later I realized you're about to react to their School Trilogy....... which contains Cypher's 1-3. So. Yeah. Let me just add they were also full of justified rage. 😂😂🤣🤣🤣 (also, I love their School Trilogy 🔥🔥🔥. I cannot believe how many totally iconic tracks you still have yet to react too!)

Yes, to all this! And just wanted to add that after their dinner where they’re very vulnerable and emotional talking about needing a break and the media misconstrues what they say and rm/Namjoon/Joonie posts his letter the president of the Korean singer’s association publicly posted this:
“I’m overcome by my fear and concern that the 'BTS Hallyu Wave', a movement possessing the greatest cultural soft power that the world has ever witnessed, will vanish soon. In the years leading up to the birth of this movement, it was believed that finding the 'Next Beatles' would be a very difficult achievement, and now, we have arrived at a point where it is difficult to hope for the 'Next BTS' to emerge any time soon. Thus, there is great concern that the heartbeat of Hallyu will cease. The decision to publish this statement was not an easy one. Please, will you reconsider the decision to go on a group hiatus, for the future of South Korea's music industry? If BTS goes away, the missionaries of Hallyu and Korean culture, ARMYs, also go away. South Korea's tourism industry will suffer, and it will be difficult to hope for a future for South Korea as a hub of culture in Asia. The special laws allotted to the sports and the classical music and arts industries for mandatory military service must be extended to popular culture as well. The need for attention and action regarding this existing issue is pressing. The government and the national assembly of South Korea must pay mind to this matter so that the Hallyu boom can continue to spread, and BTS can continue to promote actively as a group. Please pursue a revision of existing military service laws.”
The amount of pressure these men are under … I don’t know how they survive it honestly. The stocks for their company went down as well as sm, yg, and jype the day after the announcement. People were wanting to sue hybe that have stock in them for not warning about the break (the guys wanted to tell us themselves rather than some post). People have since calmed down and I believe stock and everything has gone back up but jeez.

An earlier commenter (chimelle6) talked about how many of BTS's hardships came from institutions/systems themselves rather than from finding fans. This is a VERY important fact. Even ignoring the issues with Western media coverage - the push back from the Korean industry was (and is) immense. This might seem strange, as you would think Korea would be so excited to see the success of their artist on a global stage. However, because their success occurred outside of institutions -- they succeeded DESPITE obstacles/pushbacks they faced from tv networks, media companies, etc -- these companies have always been reticent to support them as they should. Their media coverage of BTS's shift to solo projects was so horrendous that - for the first time that I know of - RM actually wrote a letter the next day in anger at the sensationalized and incorrect news coverage by Korean media. There is a VERY important interview by a political commentator with Kim Youngdae (ARMY, if you don't know this name, you should learn it!). He is a Korean music critic who has been following BTS since about 2014. He was living in the US at the time (he might still be? but he keeps appearing on all these Korean TV networks so maybe he moved back?), has a PhD in music something-or-other, interviewed BTS after one of their early BBMAs, interviewed Suga for their most recent GQ (or Vogue) interview, and has actually written a book about BTS.
In this 2020 interview, Kim Youngdae talks about how when he's being interviewed by Korean news networks about BTS's 2020 grammy nomination - they kept framing their questions as if BTS had failed: "But this isn't a major category right?", "It's because the song is in English isn't it?" "Since it is an award for a song, it just means Dynamite was popular, it doesn't mean that BTS is actually popular, right?" He goes onto talk about how Korean media - to this day - downplays or under reports BTS's successes. (Here's a link to the interview if you are interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1qZzHGNIkE&list=PLGvSTV49PIW4zK_v-Us1JVdDhtNiNJ0os&index=30)
it is insane to me that this group not only had to face xenophobia and other issues abroad, but didn't even have a 'safe space' in their home country.
Also - what you said about being doubly impressed by the vulnerability of their lyrics knowing about these hardships. Yes, yes, 1,000x YES. I consider BTS's vulnerability despite very real and very cruel attacks against them to be one the most courageous and amazing things about them. Typically, when people are cruel to you, you put up a tough outer shell. But they literally became kinder and kinder and kinder, and more and more open. I'm in awe. And it is certainly one of the things that makes ARMY so fiercely protective of them, as we realize what a precious gift they have given us in their vulnerability.
I love all your reactions!! thanks so much!!

I agree! Taylor’s video (https://youtu.be/huV_yIdxZPY) is the best in my opinion of that type to give a lot of information in a small amount of time (47 minutes) since most things that really give more insight are so long and introduce the members. That is nothing against the other videos out there! There are a lot of good ones! I think the thing that might make it and rise of bangtan stand out so much is that Taylor and Aneesa both are in media video editing type work and it shows in their videos.

Oh! I meant to mention with BTS handing out fliers for that free concert, they certainly did do that, but word got around and armys found out and lined up around the block trying to get in. Actually, Aneesa, the creator of Rise of Bangtan, was in that line trying to get in, but sadly it filled up before she was able to get in. In Rise of Bangtan she shows the armys that were waiting for them at the airport and the support they were getting. Not that it was a ton they were still small, but the fliers makes it seem like there was no one.
Even before they debuted they had a decent following of army (though they weren’t named army yet, apparently many of them called themselves bangstans prior to being named, I for one am glad that didn’t stick and we became army lol) that went really hard for them because of the predebut vlogs and music they put out. So they didn’t necessarily have to handout fliers to fill up the venue they were at because I think it only held about 100 people I believe. I feel like that clip can give a bit of a miss representation of the fans they had at that point.
That isn’t to say they didn’t have a struggle! They’ve had one of the hardest journeys I’ve ever seen, but army coming out and showing up for them hasn’t been one of them. Honestly, it has mostly been the media (with influence from the big 3) and haters trying to silence them that has been the biggest struggles, finding people to support them just hasn’t been one of them if that makes sense? The big 3 had quite a hand in what/who was being talked about in the media and who appeared on shows etc. so seeing the difference between what kind of crowd would show up for bts vs how much exposure they were getting in the media helps to show how much the sajaegi (buying their stuff for the chart) was confusing or believable for other people at the time. Many people outside the fandom believed it to be true because positive articles about them or how many fans they had nearly didn’t exist and they didn’t appear on any shows like most groups with that many fans did that were in the big 3. It was ridiculous that they were accused of that though because their company at the time had nearly no money and was going bankrupt at one point.
Wow I’m sorry that got way longer than I meant it to!

I just wanted to add in case no one has explained it yet, but all the official documentaries (In order: Burn the Stage (2018), Bring the Soul (2019), and Break the Silence(2020)) have a movie and a series under those titles. They overlap a bit but have a lot of different/scenes information. There is also commentary of the boys watching the movie versions and giving their thoughts, praising each other, and making fun of each other. Just so you know if you go searching for them it can be a little confusing.

Hi! I'm sooo glad you checked out MUNA, I love their music! I don't think you picked up on it but the music video for Silk Chiffon is based off of the cult classic 1999 lesbian romcom "But I'm A Cheerleader" with Clea Duvall and Natasha Lyonne where the main character (the cheerleader played by the main vocalist) is sent to a conversion camp by her parents but she still thinks she's straight because she's a cheerleader. It's a really funny and well done movie about a topic that is difficult to discuss, in my opinion they did beautifully, you should check it out if you ever get a chance! :) Also MUNA is really just an all around great band, I really think you would love their music! They currently have one EP and their second of two full length albums just came out! It would be a great time to jump into them honestly. I think their most recent album is soooo good definitely top 5 of the year for me and that is saying a lot. They have really great lyricism and a great sound. Most of their stuff isn't as upbeat as Silk Chiffon, and if it does have a faster beat it's really a juxtaposition to the lyrics of the song. UGH! They're really just great.

I'm glad you are checking some "documentaries" for BTS. There are a lot of those and I'd suggest checking the Rise of Bangtan. There are around 20 episodes of that and it is a super well craft fan made doc but since it is big, it may take a lot of time so feel free to watch them when you can :)
But there are official ones like Burn the Stage and Break the silence that has great insight from the members and were filmed during their tours.

What you said during Jesse Reyez’s song about how you listen to music makes perfect sense. What a powerful performance that was. Had to take a moment after that one.
Also, Seungkwan’s family name is Boo and a lot of people call him that if that is easier for you to say. When they first started they had seventeen members if you were curious about why that was their name when they have 13 members. Woozi does sooo much in regards to making the music. The8/Minghao is my bias. With so many members they can do so much with their dances that smaller groups can’t do. They’re a really cool group!
Of course, I post about bts the most and there are so many more things I’d love for you to see with them, but I did want to say I would really love to see you do Mac Miller! The rap in general that you were talking about I’m excited for, but I feel like he doesn’t get included into a lot of rap discussions and I love his stuff. I’d say the majority of his stuff is heavier rap than that, but I think your description of him was good. I love that you brought up Anderson Paak too, so talented and fun.

When they performed at Citi Field namjoon/rm talked about how New York was the city where the music that changed his life was born.
And the reason that they looked so shocked at getting that award was because it was the very first time an artist outside of the big 3 companies (sm, jyp, and yg) won a daesang (top award). Those companies pretty much controlled the entertainment world in South korea and artists from any other company were considered to not have a chance. Now bts’ company bighit/hybe makes more than the big 3 combined.
I’m so happy you got to see some snippets of a couple speeches. Their speeches are so heart felt and beautiful. The full versions of the clips you saw are so special!

Lights was their pre single for the Japanese album they released called Map of the Soul: 7 ~ The Journey ~ and is felt to be a continuation of sorts of Boy With Luv. I can’t remember if you watched that mv or not? But in that mv they’re outside of the theater for most of it and this mv came out after and now they’re inside the theater. Though there are other meanings one of the meanings both hold is that they want to still connect with fans on a human level. Around this time some fans were feeling like they had gotten so huge that they were too high up and separated from them so they couldn’t connect in the same way and it was sort of a reassurance that we’re still with you. Like in the boy with Luv mv when rm/namjoon is up on the stage being separate then the crowd joins so they’re all together. And then you got lights spot on just thought this description would pull that meaning together.

I’m glad you loved First Burn, if you’re looking for some mainstream Hamilton vibes you’d probably enjoy checking out the Hamilton Mixtape at some point! It’s a bunch of artists doing covers/different versions of the songs, plus a few extra things. Kelly Clarkson does It’s Quiet Uptown, The Roots are on a few songs, etc. It’s kind of what Hamilton was originally supposed to be in LLM’s head before it became a full-blown production. Thanks for the reaction, Michael! 😁

Totally agree. Taylor's video is an excellent introduction to the background, talents and personalities of the boys. The Rise of Bangtan is a Netflix-worthy series. Aneesa has done such an extraordinary job putting it together and it is so wonderful to follow their journey from pre-debut. The Legends To Nobodies vid, ahh, so much to say. It’s always so crazy how they had to put flyers on the street and beg people to come to their concert. BTS’s journey has always been a motivation for me to follow my dreams. They really were the underdogs and seeing all the backlash was so painful. I am contemplating whether I should request the “hardships” video 😅, it’s so sad.
The #plagarisimboys trended #1 in Korea when they were doing a concert. It reminds me of the Taylor and Kanye situation where Taylor trended #1 as well. I saw how deeply affected Taylor was in her documentary and she had to take a year off, so it is shocking how BTS went through that but still had to work and shrug it off, but RM did reveal that during 2016,2017,2018 was the worst time for him. I’m glad they are getting to venture on their solos, like TRULY happy for them. It’s what they need to regain energy back. They deserve it.
Still With You by JK, sheeshhhh, my fav solo song from his. He also recently released a collab with Charlie Puth. Also, you mention jungkook in a boxing ring and FYI: John Cena is a huge ARMY lol.
Anyways; thank you for your insightful thoughts as always :) Have a good night.

BTS has this army membership presale thing for concerts they have been doing recently which kinda helped with the scalpers. They still managed to get some tickets, but the drop in the number of tickets occupied by them were insane. All the tickets were sold out in the presale itself though

So glad to see you have some CARATs in the community, because SEVENTEEN is amazing! I'm seeing them live next month, and I know I'm not prepared for the talent that will be on display. It's too long to send you as a custom request, but they recently did a dingo Killing Voice episode, where they sing a medley of songs live, and it's SO GOOD (but about 20 minutes long). They have an abundance of talent, because even the hip-hop and performance teams can sing, and every one of them can dance. I'm sure you'll get some SVT choreo soon in your custom requests, and it will blow your mind.
I'd wondered if you'd do all the Japanese BTS songs together or not, but I'm glad to see they're in the custom requests, too. They're so, so good. All the Japanese songs are never-skips for me.
You can watch the Citi Field show from the Love Yourself tour. It's available for streaming on Weverse (for purchase). It's a fantastic concert. It was the tour documentaries and dance practices that fed my early interest the most, because seeing 7 artists sharing their vulnerabilities, their self-reflection, and their hard work so openly--and the love and generosity they have for their fans and each other--was something so new and different to me. I appreciate all those things about your work and the community you're building here, so thank you, Michael!

So glad to see you react to First Burn! For context on who performed it: at the time there were 5 companies of Hamilton being performed worldwide, and the 5 performers were the 5 current Elizas. He brought together an army of Elizas to sing the angry version of Burn.

So enjoyed your reactions, as always. You have ventured into BTS Japenese songs. They are some of my favorites as they highlight the vocal line so well. Two of my favorites are Crystal Snow and Let Go. RM's wisdom resonates with me also! He is a very special person.

I would really like to see your reaction to A Guide to BTS: The Bangtan 7 by Taylor. It's such a good and recent video that shows the talent and stories from the members. And I would also recommend you The rise of bangtan. It's a documentary made by an Army but it is like a movie and it shows the storie of BTS in a different way from their beginnings. It would be awesome if you can react to this :) Have a great day

BTS' Japanese songs are so beautiful and some of my favourites. I highly recommend Crystal Snow, Don't leave me, and Let go :)
Also, question: are you ever planning on opening the custom tier back up? No pressure, just wondering

a little fun fact for Zutter is that the Korean word they're saying is 쩔어, which also happens to be the korean title for BTS' Dope! Also, you were right on the ill/1 bar since 1 in korean is pronounced 'il'. (RM used this same wordplay on his verse in Dis-ease!)
And honestly, if there's someone who can absolutely brag about their success is G-Dragon. This man became a trainee when he was 8 years old and changed the game along with Big Bang, especially with the fact that they were one of the firsts to really be involved with writing, composing and producing from the very start, back in 2006.
I don't think a lot of people who've joined k-pop recently understand just how influential the group - but especially G-Dragon - were and still are in south korea and how many records they've broken in the early 2010 (like the fact that G-Dragon was the first korean act to enter the Billboard 200 charts more than once and BB was the first male group to have multiple videos with over 100 million views). So many artists look up to him and were inspired by him and Big Bang and I'm sure you're starting to understand why

You had not listened to Lights yet since it's one of their Japanese songs. Those songs are so beautiful, I especially love Jin's silver vocals shining through all of them. And if you'd like to, I would love to see a video reacting to all of them since they're not many.
Xceleste's videos are a must for armys, she's amazing. I'm sure you must have received recommendations for The Rise of Bangtan series on youtube. It's from another creator but it's so amazingly done!
Still with you is my absolute favorite Jungkook solo (outside from the ones in BTS discography) The acapella version is on the cd only Proof album. He did a Falling cover which is beautiful. Oh I also LOVE Stay Alive sang by Jungkook and produced by Suga; that one's a soundtrack and it has that epic sound to it.
It's pretty late here so I'll catch up on the non BTS reactions tomorrow :)

Lights is from their Japanese album Face Yourself. I love all their Japanese songs, partially because I understand them but they are different. I think Jin and JK are great in Japanese songs. You have not reacted to this song.
XCeleste does a great job. Her Hardship video chronicles their struggles. Because Big Bit was not a big company, BTS had tougher climb than those from the big 3 companies. They really we’re the ultimate underdogs.
JK’s Still With You was written for Army as a gift and the acapella version is on CD3 of Proof. He wrote another song called My You for this year’s anniversary. He goes on Vlive and sings requests from fans. He was 15 when he debuted and I remember your comment about it was hard for you to see him as a baby when you watched Dope MV… it’s hard for me to see him as sexy JK when he sang My Time…Lol I’m always blown away when I hear him sing, especially in earlier albums how good he is. BRW, his cover of Falling is incredible! You’ll love it!

For context, the silk chiffon video is a parody of the movie "but im a cheerleader" which is a cult classic comedy film about a gay conversation camp. (it showed up in heartstopper as well when nick was looking at movies)

Thanks for reacting and appreciating the Best vocalist Kelly Clarkson. Yes I loved her and Taylor since the beginning. Kelly released a 6 song EP of her Kellyoke full versions. Queen of the night by Whitney is fantastic. Kelly had an interview recently that she is not ready to release a new original album yet. She wrote a lot of songs and she went through a divorce in 2020.

Oh are you in for a treat with the Japanese songs! One word: vocals.
Also what you were saying about RM’s lyricism reminds of something I saw on Twitter somewhat recently. Someone said that with most artists who sing about trials and challenges and self discovery, you can empathize as a listener and it’s probably a meaningful song. But with BTS - and personally I think this speaks especially to RM’s writing style - it feels more like they are empathizing with YOU, and that’s one of the reasons they’re just so different. 💜💜💜

Reba is freaking legend... a. I mean her voice is just so awesome, it has a sweetness to it but also a grit that just pulls you. B. Her songs are amazing. My favorites are "The night the lights went out in Gerogia." (Talk about story time) and then my newer fav song of hers is "somebody's Chelsea" which is cute little love song

BTS also have full Japanese albums with mostly rerecorded songs in Japanese but each album I'm pretty sure has 1 or 2 new singles as well :) which is probably why you haven't heard of them. They include Lights, Don't Leave Me, Let Go, Crystal Snow, Film Out, The Stars & a few more I think
