j-hope - Jack In The Box | Full Album Reaction

I'M SO PROUD OF HIM

The lyrics on the youtube videos I watched were pretty rough, so THANK YOU to the few of you that sent me a message to some good translations! I ended up using them the second half of the album because things weren't making sense. So the video gets a little clunky on the back end with me having to hear the song then match the lyrics but it was all so worth it!!

Comments

I love this album so much, I'm listening to it again today And I love listening to music with this wonderful man. 보라해💜borahae💜

the untamed Alex

Oh I would love to see your reaction to JHope at Lollapaloosa! It was Epic! Your review of his album was so thorough and he deserved your thoughtful analysis.

Kathleen Mangum

i highly recommend checking out j-hope's performance at lollapalooza, he did absolutely amazing! you can find the full performance on the official bangtan tv's channel, and i also uploaded that same performance with subtitles which you can find on my channel, if you'd prefer reading the lyrics along:) (which i highly recommend 'cause hobi's writing and storytelling throughout his albums are mind blowing) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8feMj1V4DU&t=1485s

Ilona B

He has done it on a past custom request!

chimelle6

His lollapalooza performance was insane. He made me cry. I rewatched it like 10 times already. I think if you have time you should really check it out. It's an hour and 16 minutes long. https://youtu.be/6ak5yOmj8W8

JasminaH

i also recommend bts room live to see their songs live and a little look into their discography with probably a few songs you've heard already!

Zoe

i hope you react to a guide to bts members: the bangtan 7 to know even more and more about them and their personalities!

Zoe

Love your reactions!! You should react to Alec Benjamin!!

Hailey Pecore

now it’s uploaded to bangtanTV so i’m sooooooooo chomping at the bit for a reaction to it!! 😭😭😭

Kat O

I was thinking the same thing! I feel like there has been so much new stuff we have been mentioning idk if this will happen but gosh I can’t stop thinking about it and want everyone to see it and discuss so bad! 🤣

chimelle6

I loved listening to this album for the first time with you! With Hobi performing at Lollapalooza yesterday, I keep feeling more and more proud of him everyday. It looks like he is just shining in his element lately, making his music and getting to perform it all. It makes me so happy for him. And It'll be fun if you get a chance to react to his first solo mixtape, hope world!

Jenna

I am PRAYING someone requests the Lallapalooza performance. If you need the file please lmk! 😭😭😭

Kat O

I really hope you’ll react to his first mixtape/album soon!! You kinda need the whole shebang to fully understand him😊💜

Bangtan is life

dark and wild is the next BTS album he's going to listen

clacla

I'm telling you if you like old school rap, please. The best bts song about rap, is Hip Hop love/phile, you have to check it out, or at least the album.

Killua Zoldyck

I just want to say how much I am also so proud of J-hope. To be honest, I didn't grow up with hip-hop sounds and rap, but I knew what it sounded like (roughly), but after knowing BTS (especially their old albums) and listening to Jack in the Box, I really appreciate and am starting to fall in love more and more in this 80-90's sound. I am in awe of how they can bring and let the new generation appreciate this genre as well :)

Hailey Lee

Thank you. I did remember him mentioning the mixtape reviews but often allot skip RMs first mixtape and jump straight to Mono.

MinSugasonly1

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that he has said that he plans on doing them all! It might be a while? Because I think he has finishing the group discography first and I assume he will do the new solo stuff as they come out. Don’t lose hope! I’m so sorry about your mom. Though it might be just through the internet I’m sending love your way! 💚💜

chimelle6

I'll keep my comment short since there are so many repeat comments. But I love your reactions. And would love for you to do the rap line mixtape reactions. To see how far they have come. From jhopes hope world to jITB. RM self titled to Mono is a huge shift and shows growth and maturity. Then Suga's AgustD and D2. RM's self titled album is only available on SoundCloud. There is. Two MVs my fav being joke. He also did a song with Wale called change which is relevant even today. And champion with fallout boy. I can't afford to request songs cause my mom passed away recently and most of my money was spent on funeral costs. But if anyone else would like to request those I'd be grateful. Thank you again for your honest reviews. You are the only reactor I support on patreon

MinSugasonly1

Thank you, thank you, thank you! J-Hope is someone I very much admire in BTS. I'm so glad he was able to show himself through this album and I think it showed who he is perfectly. He's is a super optimistic person, but he's also a realistic person. The other members have also talked about how professional and calm he is behind the scence. He's a very driven person. He has a very funny and comical persona, but if you watch anything where they talk deeply, he's a very serious person who listens to others. I'm so glad he went this direction. His first Album/Mix tape was great when it came out. I loved it and still listen to it. It was very fun and he had a lot of meaning behind it too. This album just shows how far he's come. When I heard More after it came out, it didn't surprise me at all that his influence was 90s hip hop. When the album came out, it was everything I could have hoped for and more. His influences are all through the album. He was a dancer first, and going by the fact he did a remake of Chicken Noodle Soup, you can tell he was greatly influenced by 90s music. You should check out his song Mama LIVE. He does some really great vocals with a choir behind him too. Or even check out a compilation video about his singing. He's a sub vocalist. So he's done some backing vocals and stuff. Thank you for this reaction. I don't have people in my life who love to listen to music the way I do. They mostly just listen to English music. Listening to others react to music I love and give a TRULY honest review, is great. I love those who take the time to read the lyrics, and give there take on a song. It always makes me think of songs in a different way. Someone else's perspective on anything is always something I want to hear because it helps me open my mind to other things. So thank you! 💜

Ruth Miranda

would u consider doing more hip hop album reactions? such as diving into eminem’s or kanye west discography?

Ana Saldana

i’m more of a silent watcher than a commenter, but jhopes vocals would truly be a hidden gem if he didn’t choose include it in his solo work. he does a lot of adlibs and hidden vocals in bts’ songs/projects, so he’s been secretly showing off his talents for quite some time. not to mention the fact that he didn’t learn how to rap until after he joined bighit. thanks for the amazing reactions as always 💜

jxfae

would highly recommend checking out the interview they posted on youtube about this album, provides a lot of insight into j-hope’s thoughts on the making process of the album and his thoughts and meanings behind each track: https://youtu.be/umSGz3WtLMg

Caitlin

- Tae/V was in the mv during the office freeze frame portion. He wasn't supposed to be but he went to visit and brought hobi some food. Tae had ended up being in hobi's mv daydream from his first mixtape in a similar way (behind the scenes video from the making on the mv: https://youtu.be/jl8GHkEguXE) army spotted him before this was released because his toes were out (he is always wearing slip ons lol) That is all the things I can remember right now. Lol

chimelle6

- Possible reasons for mentioning the painter Dali: "i love how he references the painter 달리 (Dali) but also in korean the word 달리 means “differently”. so in this context this line can alternatively be translated to smth like “drunk in the artistic painting, i throw myself out there ‘differently’ (달리 들이대)”" also another person said that this artist makes dreamworlds which could be tying back to his song daydream from his first mixtape (ops: https://twitter.com/seoulocello/status/1542761994008379392?s=20&t=t0biHKH3v0NfEQoqAcvFRg)

chimelle6

- possible reason for eenie meenie miney moe: "the "eenie, meenie, miney, moe" originate from ancient celtic rituals of sorting out who would be chosen to d*e as sacrifice. In this theory, the words come from the celtic countdown, “one, two, three, four.” thus the line, "dancin' baby flows" is him k*lling his 'baby flow' and moving on cuz he's got passion and he's gotta go since he's not satisfied yet." so he has killed off his past self so he can grow more and that is why he isn't enough because he hasn't reached his new self just yet? (op: https://twitter.com/hoseokmymuse/status/1542743459668590592?s=20&t=t0biHKH3v0NfEQoqAcvFRg)

chimelle6

Okay, trying to recreate my comment yesterday about More! I had said I wasn't sure how you would feel about More, because it does have such a different sound, but thought you would connect with the lyrics. I'm glad you ended up liking it. I said that before the whole album had come out (more was the first thing to drop), but once it was I knew you'd love it! - there are scenes in the mv that match up with fight club, I haven't taken the time to fully think of what meaning that has, but found it interesting (link to army that put some of the images side by side: https://twitter.com/jungkswift/status/1542728557251547136?s=20&t=CB7cJAiYAP7f1T4wAgdKAw) - possible reason why he used kitkats specifically in his lyrics: "Yeah kitkats are popular in japan and are given as good luck charms for school entrance exams because its similar to the phrase kitto katsu (きっと勝つ) which means "you will surely win/succeed"" (op: https://twitter.com/namu_aoi/status/1542742369342291968?s=20&t=t0biHKH3v0NfEQoqAcvFRg)

chimelle6

I did not know about that youtube channel! Thanks so much for sharing!

Some more tidbits: • dis-ease from BE was originally meant to be on this album before covid messed up all their plans. Since the other guys are on it now and it got changed a lot I’m so curious what the original was supposed to sound like. And would that have made the album longer or are one of the tracks that is on it now a replacement? I feel like the message of that song fits so well, though it is touched on in the album still (blue and grey from BE was supposed to be on tae’s) • Hobi said that = is a continuation of piece of peace from his first mixtape. • Dionysus from the map of the soul series is hobi’s song so I wonder now if he did that because he knew he wanted to do this concept with his name and wanted to build on that greek gods world prior to making his album • the cover art was a collab with an artist named kaws that Hobi has been obsessed with for years. Him and Joonie both collect a lot of his statues.

chimelle6

"It is like a whole day event, so the way you catch so much from a first listen is impressive." YES. it IS a full day event in ARMY land. Thousands of people gather on stationhead in the few hours before the music drops. Millions of people stay up or sets their alarm to be present the MOMENT it is released (if possible, many people have work. I'm lucky with my time zone). It is like a giant ARMY party. I love it because we not only get to really SIT and marinate in an album, but it becomes such a community event where you get to hear the emotions, thoughts and insights of so many other people at the same time. Then, as translations and theories slowly come out, it is like..... I don't know, it's like crowding in a waiting room watching something be born. There is something about that communal aspect of a BTS music release that just..... ugh, it's hard to describe. The end result, though, is that it makes BTS music so indelibly associated with community. It's now so hard to feel alone when I listen to BTS music.

pebble

omgg yes i can't wait for his reaction to D-2!! and mono... so excited for a mono breakdown, i know he's gonna love it

signe !

That’s probably what I did then 😞😭

chimelle6

My original post was deleted after I accidentally hit Return/Enter key. :(

Yukari

Omggg i loved your reaction to this!! I always love how deep you get in the boys' lyricism. Next time you should check out AGUST D's 'D2' album!! The lyricism there is crazy as well!

SB

YES! I'm so glad to see this up, let the party begin. Old school beats from stem to stern. 21:45 of perfection. MORE: Hip-hop grunge rock goodness. This flow tho, OMG. I'm fond of the throwback to EGO and [apparently Fight Club] Something you miss in the English trans on YT is the water references, he has 4 back to back in the outro. Also, I want to put it out there, that Jack in the Box, may have originated from the myth of the Devil in the Boot. Those checkered clown-like shoes he's wearing, look a lot like boots, yes? So, are his darkened [sunken appearing?] eyes indicative of Hobi wearing devil-possessed boots? Also, the backup band, looks like demons a la Buffy the Vampire slayer, [tho some folks think they are burned] there are hints of the ARSON track in the MORE video. Gas canisters and what are those bottles he's breaking really for, anyhow? =[Equal Sign]: Jhope has VOCALS, my friend. That is all him on this track. Also, I turned into a dang fool when this track hit my ears. I know he can sing like this, I always want more Hobi singing because he has a beautiful voice. Music Box: Reflection I LOVE the beat drop. That's it, that's the comment. Safety Zone: Yes. Just yes. @JaickoLawrence is the additional vocals. Future: Lyrics aside, it's those dang "na-na's" that the children's choir sings. It's so dang catchy. ;) They reel you in. Arson: I made the mistake of listening to this song before hearing the entire album and it was a bit jangling. But when I listen to the album from stem to stern no stops no shuffle, ARSON becomes the perfect ending. This ENTIRE album SLAPS. He's telling a story and the flow of the songs is just perfect. I always play it stem to stern, no shuffle. It's so good. -M-

-Mac-

You should definitely go back and check out the lyrics to the others too. Pandora's Box I found to be especially poetic and STOP has a really strong message too. :) Thanks for taking the time!

SNBangtan

So glad you referenced better lyrics! It makes a huge difference in understanding the songs. I knew you would love this album, as it has such flow song to song. You even asked - "I want another verse on how he feels on all that. . . " It flows right into = (equal sign) That's how he feels! We are all =

Meredith Posch

Hobi will be headlining LOLLAPALOOZA on July 31 (and presumably performing Jack In The Box) and theres a livestream if you want to check that out!! So excited to see him performing these tracks, because if theres one thing I’ve learned about BTS its that you think you can’t live a song anymore, and then they perform it live…

Han

I was so excited for this one and honestly cant believe someone thought you wouldn't like it?? With those old school hip-hop beats and the lyrics on it??? insanity I think comments already covered most of what I'd say, but one think I'd like to point out is that j-hope always mentions that his name made him who he is, not really the other way around. He wanted to have the J and Ho from his name (Jung Hoseok) as a part of his stage name and J-hope came up during a meeting with RM and their CEO and since then he's really grown into it and ended up becoming this ray of sunshine and source of comfort that we know. But when he says that he made his music, his feels and everything else he literally means he made them up until he actually became hope itself.

Giu Bressani

For future reference the channel Enjoy BTS More makes next level lyric videos using lyrics (with credit) from trusted translators in our fandom. They also make or use very complimentary graphics so the viewing is enjoyable too. I HIGHLY recommend them for your future lyric video needs! Especially for j-hope because his lyricism is very referential in content and abstract in form so word for word translations can look like word-clouds of seemingly unrelated and random thoughts. But when you understand the reference, context, wordplay, and syntax it turns out to be a wildly apt, clever, often playful, complex and thoughtful bar. I spend more time with his lyrics than anyone else's and go through several translations because he really is tricky. Our fandom translators always say he's the most difficult member to translate for.

SNBangtan

My favorite song changes every time too! I can't handle it!

Lisa Reid (Sophrishea)

This album literally gets me out of bed each morning since it came out. It's the perfect length to put on while you're getting up and moving (and I've been playing it at other points in the day as well). Because I know how much you appreciate full albums tied together by a message and connected lyrics, I knew you would love this--but especially with the throwback hip-hop and r&b sounds! j-hope has said more than once in the promotions around the album that he put his heart and soul into this album, and diving into the lyrics with you makes that so clear. He's also been involved with every detail of everything from the production to the videos to the promotions. I hope he's so proud of himself, and I'm again blown away by his vulnerability and generosity in putting this art out in the world. I know he's also working hard to put on a spectacular performance in Chicago, that will also surprise us!

jennptx

I am absolutely O B S E S S E D with this album. Listening to it from start to finish is such an experience. The transitions from one song to another are perfect. I especially love the transition from Stop to Equal Sign. The one doing the vocals at the end of Safety Zone was Jaicko Lawrence (took us a while to find out because he's not credited on spotify or apple music but I saw a screenshot where he was credited, don't know where it was from). Every time I listen to this album, my favorite songs change. There's always something new to latch onto. Also, not saying much about this to avoid spoilers, but Hobi said Equal sign is like a part 2 of P.O.P (Piece of Peace) pt. 1, from his mixtape: Hope World. YOUR DOG IS SO CUTE!!! Is he/she always there? I've never noticed before.

Mariana

Haha yes! I was wondering if he didn’t want to be found since it took us a few days.

chimelle6

are you kidding? I loved this thesis!

Mariana

The way every army was trying to find who it was. It took us a while even being in our FBIest mode

Mariana

chimelle6

btw Charlie Puth and Jungkook did a collab to make ‘Left and Right’ which is such a cute bop with a cute music video. The production is so interesting and they both have such lovely voices of course. In early August we are getting vocal line, Benny blanco and snoop dog in a song which also sounds very exciting. And it is expected that Suga will release his own album sometime in the future. So I’m just ecstatic.

emmie jeans

Also omg we are getting so much new music from BTS it’s insane. With this break from full group music and promotion, you can see them flourish and explore new corners of their artistic journey. It just makes me so happy because they all seem to be a little bit freer and more relaxed.

emmie jeans

I’m questioning too if Becky G will show up for Chicken Noodle Soup? And I think they would just watch and not actually perform but that vlive after one of their Vegas shows Jimin asked if they should all go to jhope’s solo show (which totally went over my head at the time since we didn’t know they’d be focusing on solo stuff and that would be possible??) soo a slight possibility that some or all of them would come out for a song?? Idk whatever ends up happening I’m so excited for it!!

chimelle6

I’m obsessed with this album, the best part is it gets better each time you listen and each time you gain more understanding when rereading the lyrics!! Can’t wait for you to listen to their other past mixtapes and future solo albums, their lyricism is insane and the music is just so good. :)

emmie jeans

Future is one of my favorites. I think he is saying that he tries to be the hope, but he needs it too....he needs that hope for the future after seeing all of the ugliness of the world and the doubt and the questioning of himself. That song just makes me feel better after hearing it. It's also a no skip album for me and I have never had a no skip album from anyone before. My wish is that the songs would have been a little longer, but he leaves us with hope for more in the future. :)

Raevan21

To me Future is kind of a response to the question in What If about whether he has the right to tell people to be hopeful when his life is one of good fortune and success... In Future, Hobi is saying that he needs hope too - that even with all the good fortune (or perhaps because of it - see Safety Zone), the future is a scary place for him - and so he needs the courage, hope, and faith that he tries to give other people too. He also needs to just go with the flow and hope for the best. Loved loved loved the Album listen! I'm so glad that people linked you to Colin - his way of getting at the meaning of the lines is so needed when the lyric videos just dump everything into a translator and barely proofread. Korean has an entirely different syntax and word order than English, so (as you saw) things can get very muddled. I liked how he treated Jack in the Box like a novella that Hobi had released. Colin usually does little footnotes or explains references in more detail when needed - but he always wants to preserve the artists intentions, and I love that he wanted to present Jack in the Box like the unbroken narrative that it was. I will also gladly sign your petition to have Equal Sign replace the national anthem of all countries!

Alix Drifty

Something about 'Future'. In an interview where he was asked his biggest fear, he said it was his future :,)

ltbenthusiast

Thank you so much for taking the time to reaction to Hobi's album!!! I've personally have had this album on repeat since it came out and have been playing it straight through intro and interlude included. You are actually my favorite reactor for music because you take the time to actually listen and read the lyrics. I'm not sure if you know, but Hobi (J-Hope) is headlining at Lollapalooza Sunday July 30th and it will be streaming via Hulu if you are interested in checking it out! it's most likely going to have some spoilers for his first mixtape because he's doing an hour long set and this album is 22 very fast minutes

Sydnee R

Haha not going to lie I get very excited hoping you’ll comment on my posts with more. 🤣🤣 I hadn’t even thought or seen anything about that with No More Dream but that is such a good point!! Sorry Michael that we make these so long! 🤣🤣

chimelle6

You put everything together so well!!! Great job!!! I just kept saying yes! Exactly! The whole time I was reading!! Lol

chimelle6

Thank you for this! Been waiting for your album review!

OG

One thing to add to my fellow long-commenter 😂. The wu tang clan song sampled on What If is the song "Shimmy Shimmy Ya".... and a line from "No More Dream" (BTS's debut song) is "See me, see me, ya [original line in English] which sounds EXACTLY like "shimmy, shimmy, ya" both on the track and live performances. I don't know for sure that "No More Dream" is intending to reference that song with that line and I don't have the music chops to pick up on any possible musical tie-ins. However, referencing old school hip hop is a very common thing BTS does in their lyrics, so I think it'd be on brand to them. IF that's the case, then J-hope's galaxy brain of musically tying in BTS's debut song on (1) J-hope's own formal debut as an individual artist and (2) a song titled "Future" about going boldly into the future and not returning to your past, is just absolutely mind blowing. 😭 Also, shoutout goes to @BLKYOONI on twitter for finding that tie-in, not me. Original thread here: twitter.com/BLKYOONI/status/1547806192721743877 and here's the thread the pull in for the lyric tie-in twitter.com/naepittamarwa/status/1350673341951172608

Ending the entire album with: Right, I lit the flame Now I ask myself, choose what Do I put out the fire, or burn even brighter Arson. Full body chills. Like saying that, of course, I’m going to choose to burn brighter. But just saying burn isn’t enough. I’ve just been burning in the past, but get ready I’m going to be committing arson now. Shoooooooot. What a statement. Which I feel like goes back to in More when he says he isn’t enough. Burning isn’t enough, arson.

chimelle6

Oh Michael, I just love your reactions and the sincerity with which you approach them. As you said, when you really engage with this album, you feel closer to jhope at the end, I’m so thankful that he was vulnerable enough to let us know him better!! My musings on Arson - I think it might be one of the best summations of an album for me, especially taking into account the visuals of the MV. It acknowledges that up to this point in his career he’s engaged in arson (similar in feel to BTS always running for ten years in RunBTS) but it’s like it’s been uncontrolled so there is collateral damage and his success itself has become his enemy. In his weariness, he asks if he should put the fire out or keep going. BUT - especially with the visual of going inside and seeing his heart on fire and his insides ashy, I think there’s a suggestion that it’s a purifying fire, like as painful as it has been, he’s coming out the other side of that fire with crystal clarity of who he is and what this life means. So when he asks if he should put the fire out or keep it burning, it’s not actually from a sense of weariness, it’s from a place of strength, knowledge, and power because if he chooses arson again, this time it will be “controlled”. These are just my random thoughts. 💜💜

Kate N

I loved how so much of this album is about asking questions. No answers. Just questions--maybe even some that have no answer. And in a polarized world where everyone is screaming about what's right and wrong, maybe taking the pause to ask questions and sit with them for a while could give us a little peace in the mix. I don't know. I found comfort in that. J-hope is always a comfort. Even when he's ripping open his chest to show us his shadows, he always seems to do it in a way that makes you feel like we'll all survive it together. /philosophical weeknight ranting

claena

Future is definitely one of those songs that sounds cheerful but the message is exactly the opposite, but it's not entirely despair he's giving our either. It's very much a "let's figure it out together" message regardless of the fear he faces. I'm so incredibly proud of Hobi and this masterpiece. I'll be cheering him on at Lollapalooza aka hobipalooza lol. Btw, hobi is a beautiful singer. I highly suggest you check out his vocal parts more.

Les

Just some different tidbits: • In an interview Hobi was asked who he showed the music to first out of the members and he said it was the same as it always is RM/Namjoon/Joonie, though he could have shown it to Suga/Yoongi, but he told him that he would wait until it was fully out in its entirety to listen to it. I loved this because Joonie and yoongi were the two that did music before being in the group and the ones that taught Hobi how to rap, warmed my heart. Rm said that he really respected him so much for putting out this kind of music at this point in time. The next person after them was jk and he said jk instantly went to work on his music after listening to it. • Hobi had a listening party for his friends and people that have impacted him in the industry throughout his journey. All the members were there besides Yoongi. Sadly he had a fever the morning of and though he got a negative covid test he didn’t go just in case to keep everyone safe. He was really sad about it and Hobi said that he had even shown him what outfit he was going to wear and told him he has going to get makeup done 🤣🥺 Jin left right after the album was done before many pictures were taken because he is our introvert baby. Jk is super introverted too and he stayed in a corner the whole time. From what we saw he didn’t leave the corner except when the majority of the members were dancing together in the middle of the dance floor. 🤣 by the end of the night he was done and was laying on the stage while Hobi was up there with a glass of wine in his hand. 🤣 • Hobi and Joonie have both said that equal is their favorite song off the album. I know our country is a mess, but if you can imagine it South Korea is even worse there are VERY few celebrities out, I can think of 2? And one of them was recently assaulted. They did have their very first ever pride parade this past weekend (I think? Time is bleeding together lol) And they have really intense gender wars. And their new president that was recently elected people call the Korean Trump 😕 this song and Stop are very bold in general for Korea, but especially since this new president. Though bts has always been very open about how they feel on these types of subjects. • in a how well does bts know each other interview (https://youtu.be/6jfIOa_zgRc) that came out almost a year ago Hobi got asked what his greatest fear was and he answered his future, which I’m assuming now he already knew he was doing that song and was spoiling it. When they were deciding what his name should be (him, rm, and bang pd the guy that put them together) they came up with Pandora’s box (he told us this story in burn the stage maybe? One of the documentary series I forget which one) then so he has been holding onto this concept for a very long time! • Wu tang clan is sampled on What If! • In regards to the songs being so short, I could be completely wrong, but I was thinking about how he used to do these live videos of him doing ‘hope on the street’ which was just him practicing and teaching street and hiphop dancing and he freestyled and often in those videos he would change songs before they would be over and it kind of feels like it did that for people freestyling? It changes up the song semi quickly so they can try different dancing with it? 🤷🏻‍♀️ He didn’t say that! Just an idea.

chimelle6

"Light shit on fire jhope" 🤣🤣🤣 Loved that intro to Arson. MANY THANKS to whoever sent you Colin's translations! His are top-tier. Top, top-tier. I follow a few translators because it's nice to compare different wordings, and I always very much look forward to his. Translators always wring their hands and shed tears trying to translate any of the rapline's lyrics because they all use such intricate wordplay and heavy context that shifting it from Korean to English is very difficult. Colin said in a recent write-up of his that Korean is so difficult to rhyme that rhyming even isn't a part of Korean poetry tradition, and Korean rap leans heavily on rhythm rather than rhyme -- so he is always flabbergasted at the way the BTS rapline incorporates rhyme, often mid-word rhymes, and rhythm in their writing. Jhope is especially amazing at this. Also, i was SO looking forward to your reaction. I've been checking this site every single day. I knew you'd love it. There is so much here to love. A few people on twitter have called the album a "twenty minute song" and I couldn't agree more. The entire thing flows so seamlessly from one sound and idea to the next. The sounds are so GOOD. The songs are GORGEOUS. The beats are *chefs kiss*. I love it. "Future" since you had a question on this song -- the only thing I have to add is that salmon, when they are swimming up stream, they actually swim back to the place where they were born -- which is why he says he can't like a salmon swim back to his past. (Then they lay eggs and die, in the same place they were born). So not only is he talking about not fighting with the current but going with the flow, he's saying that even though he's scared of the future, and everything is going so fast and he has no safety zone, he has no way to return to his past. It's gone. So instead of thinking of it as being swept by the waves or battered by the current, instead he will just 'ride the waves' and 'go with the flow' and not fight where life is taking him. People have theorized that "reflection" in the middle is actually the pandora's/jack's box opening (hence the sound of the music box playing). The songs before that are generally positive. "More" is wanting to get out of that box -- being thirsty, wanting more (also, brings up that 'fish in water' motif that is revisited in Future with the salmon, because, you know, the rapline are freaking lyrical geniuses). Contrast this with Safety Zone and Arson where things are too big and too fast and he's wondering how to handle it. "What if" being the first song that comes after reflection, and you see his certainty (his "hope" if you will) being questioned and wavering. In the first half he WAS hope ("Pandora's Box", track 2), after the box opens, he's wondering if he can hold onto that hope ("What if"). Then being buffeted in the subsequent tracks by the difficulties and uncertainty he faces (Safety Zone). But ultimately deciding to "Go with the Flow" (Future) and keep fanning the flames (Arson). "Stop" does contemplate the world's evils (you mentioned that before the box was opened, Hope was in there WITH the evils. I LOVED that and hadn't considered it before). But, the song, constantly returns to "stop", "calm down", "we aren't animals", "there are no bad people" (he actually does here what RM does a lot in his lyrics - which is that the 'positive lines' come across much more as trying to convince oneself, watering those seeds of faith that we hold onto in order to maintain hope). This is one of the few songs that seems to have a true chorus, though the words change each time, each time he comes back from thinking of the evils of man to calm himself down and recenter and re-find his hope. Anyway, didn't mean to write a thesis. I love the album. I was so happy to enjoy it with you. Never apologize to BTS fans for looking up lyrics. Please, we are just as obsessed with lyrics as you! I loved hearing your thoughts. Watching this was like listening to the album for the first time all over again. 😊😊 Thanks so much!

Frankly, I was waiting for your reaction to react also myself to the lyrics. What a beautiful album that gives us what a lot of songs don't have. It is amazing that an album with a message like this can be this big. Using your notoriety to convey beautiful and important messages, yes that's what BTS does, no doubt

Just wanted to say we don’t mind the ‘messiness’ at all. Most of us usually listen to the album without lyrics while we’re waiting for them to be translated then read multiple translators and see theories from other armys to tie it altogether. It is like a whole day event so the way you catch sooo much from a first listen of all of it together is impressive. Don’t ever feel like we would be annoyed by you taking the time to dig into lyrics! That is highly lacking in most people’s reactions and they work so hard on their lyrics!

Guy that does the Safe Zone vocals: https://twitter.com/jaickolawrence?s=21&t=ew4fIE_sYOjh-xJT-8lVjA

Thank you so much for your reaction and for using those much better translations, it really makes a difference. Also yes that was his vocals on Future and Hobi actually does some background vocals to bts songs. Spring Day for ex he doesn’t have his own verse on the studio version, he just does background vocals and harmonies but if you watch the live version he sings the opening verse before RM starts rapping. I absolutely love this album and I’m so happy you enjoyed it, don’t why someone told you, you weren’t going to like the album, (or was it Pandoras Box) it’s so good. Loved your thoughts on the album, looking forward to your next reaction.

I’ll have more to say about the album, but AHHHHHH YOUR PUPPY!!!!! I love him. 🥺🥺🥺

Well said.. it’s like he is saying the hopeness is not just a person but something that he has a human being also needs

I'm so obsessed with this album. J-Hope said that when he first showed the album to RM that he said didn't know Hobi could do music like this but it is so him. RM was so spot on with that, it's different from Hope World for sure but the album still feels so Hobiesque.

Jillian Johnson

Future to me is all about J-hope and us going on this journey together. He is saying he isn't bright and cheery and hopeful just for us, his fans, but because he needs that hopefulness too. I think that ties really well together with early songs on the album. The song is also such a breath of fresh air mood wise. The story of the album is told so well. It's a true journey.

SO happy you reacted to this one!!! Honestly it’s a contender for AOTY for me ☺️

YES SO EXCITED!! Also, I remember that someone mentioned that the translation was a bit off in MORE. When he says “I’m in my element”, the more accurate translation would be “I’m a fish in water” which pretty much means he sin his element but it just sounds a lot cooler when you know what the lyrics were playing at

i'm so glad you checked the lyrics for this instead of these videos, honestly this channel ( https://www.youtube.com/c/DIAL6137/playlists ) is the most accurate one i've come across in terms of lyrics, it just doesn't especify/show which member is singing the lines but i think it would be great to use it for when you decide to check their solo mixtapes since it's mostly only one of them, and their earlier albums you haven't checked yet if you're up for it, great video as always! :)

I thought I commented... So here I go again. I was at a family dinner when the notification came on my phone. So I went to the restroom so I could put one Airpod in so I could listen. LOL. I've b een listening to this on repeat basically and I'm loving this. There is an interview posted on Youtube https://youtu.be/umSGz3WtLMg where Hobi explains each track. Hobi talked about how he's been working on this since his mixed tape. He's thought of the concept, how each track flows from one to the other. I think you would enjoy it. Hobi is a great singer, but he did use someone for the backup on Safety Zone. For Equal Sign, I thought it was JK, but it's not. I love =Equal Sign. As a math teacher, the idea of equality using the equal sign is profound for me because it implies fundamental equalness of things being compared. And Hobi using this idea to talk about we are all equal is so special to me (more so than just saying people are the same). I'm so thankful that I've found Colin on Twitter because his translation is more than just a litral translation, but he offers cultural/contenxtual interpretations. This is really a masterpiece. Thank you.

Hobi does some background vocals for bts's tracks and he originally wanted to be a singer :)
