2023-07-31 22:46:11 +0000 UTCThe way this show portrays war and colonization is so masterful. A lot of conquering has been done under the guise of helping people. Sozin said he wanted to spread the glory of the fire nation which really meant he wanted to impose that "glory" on the rest of the world. The fire nation is heavily inspired by Japan and Japan used periods of economic crises in neighboring countries to seize control. Even now, conservatives in Japan will claim that they never colonized anyone and instead were just helping countries with economic struggles. There is also a lot of rewriting of history, which we saw when Aang was at the fire nation school and the kids were taught that the air nomads had a military and were a threat to the fire nation when that wasn't true at all. I could write a whole thesis on it.

2023-03-09 18:19:18 +0000 UTCI could write an entire book about "The Beach" episode, specifically about the subtext we get for Azula, but ill try to keep it short lol. Azula is ruled by fear and not love. She has learned from her father that fear is a tool those born into power get to wield and that's what separates the strong from the weak. She clings to this ideology bc it helps her cope w/ why Zuko and her mother weren't close w/ her. They were ruled by love and that made them weak and unworthy of their status. But in this episode, she realizes that that "fear" doesn't attract people to her like they are to Tai Lee, nor has it provided her with a genuine partner like Mai and Zuko, and finds she's jealous of them, despite all of these people being "beneath" Azula in her eyes. When everyone is being vulnerable she takes the opportunity to be introspective and directly/indirectly tells us that she fears that her mother never loved her, and that's the root of her character. This is also a rare moment where we see Azula with her walls down, as she relates to the trauma and tragedy of their youth with Zuko, inviting him down to the beach away from all that pain. Being called a "monster" actually hurt her, so she reclaimed that title and found a false confidence in it. She ran to power and fear to escape her pain, that is her beach. And deep down she's afraid she'll end up on an island alone.

I still question why I didn't watch the last season. Oh well. I'm glad to be watching it now. Love your Toph merch! Can't wait for the next set of Avatar reactions.

2023-03-09 16:55:49 +0000 UTClove the love for Katara’s voice actress! her name is Mae Whitman, and she’s actually been in a few shows/movies herself (Good Girls, The DUFF, etc). reiterating someone else’s comment, I would love for you to watch The Legend of Korra after this show! Korra is the avatar after Aang. the show isn’t as loved as ATLA for many reasons and people (mostly men) love to hate on Korra, but I still think there are some really cool and emotional moments in it that you’d love.
