The music was by Andrew Lloyd Webber (Cats, Evita, Phantom of the Opera) and the book was by Julian Fellows (Downton Abbey.) The musical came out in 2015, well after the movie was made. It's great fun to watch in person, too!

Obviously, the methods of going about it are wrong but a three week class project, where the kids all learn music theory, rock history and its impact today, listen to art, think critically about the art, its lyrics and melodies, and consider how the art relates to themselves (nevermind, all the team working and practical skills gained), is an extremely educational and confidence growing project. This would’ve been formative for these children. Obviously, classic schooling techniques have their place but this kind of teaching is so useful. Like, this is the kind of study you’d do in a university arts program. Critical thinking, study and personal reflection is imperative to growing young minds, it doesn’t always need to be about typical “boring” topics!! Engaging kids creativity and making them feel important and actually making them care about what they are doing/giving them agency, can be far more beneficial and actually leads to greater understanding and better retention of information, as well as greater career progression in the future. I know I’m being so serious about something silly but I just think that it’s important to remember that arts are important, skills are transferable and critical thinking and teamwork is so beneficial, even in a subject that isn’t classically valuable in school. Anyway, that’s enough of me being serious 🤓 I love this film!! I agree that Jack Black is the only one who could do this.
