"And so I have to try to not take offence?"
Fate gave me a nod as I summarised his entire reason for visiting me.
"And why exactly should I care if some annoying kid gets hurt?"
It is their fault to begin with… if they decide to mess with me, I will take action.
"Because then it will cause even more trouble for you. Many of their parents are business tycoons and while you can erase them with a thought, they will annoy you to no end." Fate said, trying his best to convince me. "Isn't it better to not involve yourself in such issues? After all, not being a part of it will ensure that there are no repercussions."
He had a point but it was still not enough to let a few kids boss me around.
"And what if they try to order me around." I asked which made him stressed.
"Then… you can reject." He said.
He is expecting a bit too much from me. But I can still do a little of what he says.
"Very well."
His eyes widened in hope.
"I will not cause trouble… knowingly. But if someone dares to insult me or order me, I shall act accordingly."
There was no possible timeline in which I was going to listen to some human child's order.
He sighed in defeat. "Fair enough."
He took out a few files and placed them before me.
"These are your documents for the school. And… I took the freedom to change your name from Morningstar to Dawns."
"You did what?!?"
"I changed your… surname."
Before I could release my powers, he activated his own to ensure that the room wasn't destroyed.
"It was Lord Lucifer's idea."
My… father's? But why?
"He permitted me to act on things that would ensure you have an easy life. And this is one such thing that will make your life easier. Morningstar is a surname that is rarer than your first name Lemuel. And to prevent too much suspicion, I changed it to Dawns."
I am surprised that my father agreed to this. But I guess it was just on paper as I didn't receive any system message this time around.
"Fate."
"Yes?"
"Do people really not value my name?" I asked.
"That they change it more often than clothes?"
It irked me to no end.
He sighed. "As I said, it was merely to make your life easier."
I didn't reply but remembered something that my father told me long ago.
'Remember Lemuel, in the world that you are going… People will not respect you until you can give them a reason to respect you. And that involves more than being called my son.'
It was one of the countless things that he said but… Maybe this one is more relevant than the others.
I might have to show them why I should be respected.
"And Lucien there is one final thing." Fate said, drawing my attention.
"Which is?"
"Can you umm… Speak more casually?"
"Pardon?"
He stared at me before shaking his head. "Since you are from Lord Lucifer's realm, your speech is too formal. And that might be a little unconventional. While it is not a problem, it can be quite difficult to explain at times." He said. "Especially since you do not wish to be associated with any novelty."
Now, this was a logic that I could get behind. The moment I came here, I noticed that everyone's way of speaking was different from mine. And what he said was true. I need to adapt a little.
"And how exactly do I do that?" I asked. "If you have any suggestions, I am all ears."
He thought about it for a while before answering. "Zatanna can help you with it."
Zatanna Zatara, my caretaker…
"You know what?" I smiled. "That's a pretty good idea."
.
.
.
"And so you came to me?" Zatanna chuckled as I shrugged.
"Yeah?"
"Ermm… I don't know what exactly I am supposed to do. Communication skills develop the more you talk and interact with people. So, as long as you talk with people, you will be good to go."
Hmm…
"That's it?"
She nodded. "Yep."
I guess it was going to take a while then…
"Anyhow… When are you going to start school?" She asked.
"Fate will be delivering the books tomorrow. So, I guess I will be going to school starting tomorrow."
"That's good."
Zatanna is easier to talk to than I expected. Well, she is better than Fate at least.
While he was good at his job… he was too strict on the rules for his own good.
"Now that I think about it, I have never asked you about your magic." She mumbled. "So what is your magic?"
How do I explain?
"Err… Something like this, I guess?"
{{Shape Fire}}
An orb of flame appeared on my hand and as I looked at Zatanna, she was grinning at me.
"An Elementalist, that's cool." She nodded at my little display. "And your control over the fire is also quite good."
Well, I was barely trying so…
"Let me show you something." She said and extended her arm. "Llaberif."
An orb of fire that was identical to mine appeared on her hand. "Maybe, I can help you with your magic?"
She really thinks that I am weaker than her, doesn't she? I know that she is insanely strong but I have been taught how to take down sorcerers of her caliber even with lesser spells.
People cannot measure my powers because of my abilities but that's not too bad. It's good to not be a show-off. You would hate to reveal too much, after all.
"Well, it won't hurt. So, I don't mind." I was intrigued by her.
"Are you an Elementalist?" I asked and she shook her head.
"Now really. While I can use elemental magic, I wouldn't call myself an Elementalist. I was born with magic, so I can use quite a few types."
That's quite interesting.
"Can you show me something else?" I asked and she agreed.
"Alright." Looking straight, she muttered. "Tolb Gninthgil."
As she finished chanting, a bolt of lightning shot forward and vanished on touching the wall… not before leaving a burn mark though.
"Oh, shit! Sorry!"
She panicked and casted another spell. "Riaper."
A white light covered the burn mark and it vanished as the light dimmed.
"That was pretty good." I said as she was using quite a few elements out here. "First fire then lightning and now a cleaning spell. You are better than I expected."
Giggling at my little compliment, she said. "Thanks. I rarely get complimented for my magic after leaving the circus. So, that was refreshing."
"A circus?"
Well, that's new.
"Yeah, I used to work as a magician in a circus. Not like anyone suspected me to be a real magician, but it was fun working there."
"So then why did you quit?" I asked and she shrugged.
"The circus management was too demanding and I also wanted to do something greater. So, I ended up becoming a part-time hero."
"Well, that's a shame."
"And why is that?" She asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Well, I won't be able to see you act in a circus." I said, which made her look at me in amusement before bursting out laughing.
"Don't worry. If I ever decide to do a show again, I will send the first invitation to you."
Huh… Was it that easy?
"Really?"
She nodded. "Yep."
I guess talking doesn't only help with improving your conversation skills.
It does many more.
