Demi Lovato | Dancing With The Devil...The Art of Starting Over | Full Album Reaction

Comments

thank you for the reaction !! Really enjoy it ! Could you please consider reacting to her new documentary ? It's a four-part series and it explains everything very well. Watching you from Spain :)

Joana Alves

Madison is actually Demi half sister

Alanna Smith

the music video to Dancing with TD is amazing as well

Alanna Smith

I'm not able to open either video. ☹ Hopefully I can catch this in the future! Looking forward to hearing your reaction!

Would you be open to recording your reaction to her documentary? It would explain a lot of her songs and the meanings. Loved this reaction and album gave me chills.

Something I just picked up, kinda un-related, I love that you are a musician but also a huge sports fan - as someone who also loves both, it's not that common! hahaha Loved your reaction too btw! Easy is 100% my favourite on the album 😍

I think Demi is soo underrated, compared to Selena, Taylor, Camila... all the mainstream artists. I've seen her live once, one or two months before she overdosed and she was AMAZING live! She deserves better and more attention <3

I LOVED this reaction!! I really recommend watching her new documentary. But I would suggest waiting until all 4 parts are released (final part comes out April 6th) so that you can watch all parts together :) Thank you!

So glad as well you reacted to this, I’ve been a huge Demi fan since her Camp Rock days and her voice is beyond incredible. Although this is definitely her best and most cohesive album I definitely recommend listening to all her other ones, just to go along with her journey and to see how versatile she is! A bunch of notes on the songs: 1. Anyone is a song she recorded a couple of days before her very public overdose in July 2018. She has since said that pretty much the moment she woke up in the hospital she knew, that if she was ever able to be on stage again, that was the song she wanted to sing because it reflects the state of mind she was in at the time. As Jalesa said, I would highly recommend watching her live (and big comeback) performance of it at the Grammys 2020. 2. Dancing with the Devil outlines her struggle with her addiction and how quickly she spiraled when she relapsed after 6 years of sobriety. As many have already recommended, it’s also the title of her new YouTube documentary, in which she is just as transparent with her story as on this album. It’s gutwrenching and heartbreaking, but also so informative about addiction in general as well as how she is able to deal with it all. 3. ICU has been explained a number of times in the comments already. 4. The intro is placed here as an interlude to transition from the “DWTD” part of the album to the “TAOSO” part. 5. She’s said about TAOSO that because she’s had to start over so many times, she feels like she’s mastered the art of it. 7. TWYDLAM was co written by Julia Michaels (and I personally feel like you can just tell she had her hands on this, she has such a distinctive writing style) it tackles Demi’s eating disorder as well as, according to the Apple notes on the album, that feeling when someone you love doesn’t really look at you anymore. There is a specific ex of Demi’s that was rumored to not want to be seen with her unless she looked a certain way, which would explain a lot in the song. However, this is just fan speculation. 8. Melon Cake (also co-written by JM) is her way of both addressing her eating disorder and how both her old team and especially her old management completely controlled her eating habits (e.g. Watermelon shaped as a cake topped with fat-free whipped or coconut cream in lieu of an actual cake because it had too many calories). There’s an Ellen interview from March 2020 where she says that her team used to check her bank statements to control what she ordered, took the phone out of hotel rooms so she couldn’t order room service and didn’t want talkshows to offer any food in the dressing rooms (even fruit, there’s sugar in it too!). This also explains why apparently someone was fired simply for giving Demi chocolate in the backseat. 9. So, Demi has said numerous times that Ariana is her best friend and biggest supporter in the industry. She’s said that she showed Ari the song DWTD backstage at her concert in London in 2019 (that was the first time Demi got a birthday cake from her team in a long time because Ari’s show was on Demi’s birthday). Ari really loved the song and eventually wrote Met Him Last Night with Demi on her mind, gave her the song and Demi wanted her to stay on it. Demi has said that for her the message of the song is about how it feels to relapse. 10. WOPS was originally Sam’s song and Demi just really loved it, because its message resonates with her a lot. 11. This is just from me as a fan, but this song really feels like a continuation of the song Lightweight from Unbroken. 12. Demi’s only recently started to embrace her sexuality and openly labeling herself as queer, so this song really represents her and that. 14. Ooooh what a doozy! So this is just Demi clapping back at her ex-fiance who she met shortly before lockdown, went into lockdown with him, got engaged to him after 3 months and then broke up within another 2 because he turned out to be a bit of a creep because he’s been obsessed with a lot of female celebrities in the past and it seems like he was really with Demi for the exposure and fame. Prior to dating her hardly anyone knew him and suddenly he was in a movie and wanting to release an album etc. Hence the 15mins, because he wanted and got his 15 minutes of fame when they were together. After they broke up he was super public about it and tried to frame it in several different ways including that he was the one who wanted space, that Demi was being controlled by her team (IG stories that said #FreeDemetria) and that he didn’t know about the breakup and only heard from it in the press. A couple days later he was seen “crying” in Malibu (as mentioned in the song) on the beach where he proposed to Demi. 16. So, Demi talks about her solution to sobriety in her documentary and this is the accompanying song. She specifically mentions that she’s tired for being known for her illness, saying that she’s much more than her addiction. She’s found a way to sobriety that works for her, but it’s unconventional compared to general recovery strategies. This song tries to explain that while also making it clear that really no one gets to have an opinion on it but her and her recovery team. 18. You were right, Butterfly is about a parent, it’s about her birth father with whom she had a very complicated relationship prior to his death in 2013. She talks some more about the specifics of that relationship in her documentary as well. Mainly this song shows that she has accepted that her father and the issues he had and the ones she had with him will stay with her for the rest of her life, but that she’s now able to accept that and the circumstances to his illness and death and no longer has to struggle in June (he died around father’s day) because of that. The butterfly to her is a representation of him. 19. (Another JM one yayy! Once again, you can totally tell her writing style imo.) basically just the full circle from Anyone. She’s finally in a good place now after all the struggles she’s gone through. She’s accepted her past and showcases all the hard work it took for her to get to this palce. Perfect album closer! This album is incredibly cohesive, telling all aspects, twists and turns of her journey that led to the OD as well how her life’s gone on since. Her prior documentary Simply Complicated that came out around the release of the Tell Me You Love Me album provides a lot of insight, like Nicki said, into how her issues and addictions really started. In hindsight, it also provides a lot of insight into how, even though she had come so far then, she was still miserable and how the circumstances described around her initial way to sobriety were set up to eventually fail her. Another thing to recommend is the music video to DWTD (song). It explicitly retells the story of the night of her OD. If you’re going to watch the documentary though, I’d recommend watching the music video after that, not before. Thank you for your honest and kind review of the album, I really enjoyed it!

Patrizia Rietmann

SO happy to see you reacting to Demi! As others have said, the doc is incredibly eye opening. I also highly recommend watching her live performance of Anyone at the 2020 Grammy’s. Thank you for everything you do!

Jalesa Sims

YAY! Thank you for reacting to Demi’s new album! good thing I waited for you to react before I listened. I’ve gotten used to listening to albums with you. just repeating what everyone above is saying, everything about this will make sense if you watch her new documentary on youtube. Also recommend checking out Tell Me You Love Me. That album was just as amazing. The sound/genre is different from this, but you’re gonna love it. At the end you were saying “she felt like her life was over”, but it really (not so sound so harsh about it) was supposed to be over because of her OD. She got really lucky and she was saved by her doctor, her assistant, and all the forces around her. At this point, I feel like it is a need for you to check out her documentary. Lol Anyway, I enjoy listening to music for the first time with you and everyone in the comments! Thank you for this. Appreciate it.

Loved loved loved this reaction! I highly recommend that you deep dive into her life a bit and then re-listen to the album. There are so many songs and even lines that make so much sense when you know about her life. Please do some reactions to the episodes of her YouTube documentary!! I would love to watch you catch up with what’s been going on with Demi since 2011. 😊😊 much love!

Emily

Maddison is her half sister, When Demi woke up in the hospital (in the ICU) after her overdose she was legally blind. Maddison spoke to her and Demi didn't recognize her voice. I think that is what the 'I see you' line is referring to. It goes into a lot of detail in her documentary on Youtube. Thank you for doing this reaction.

Melanie Antle

Love this reaction and so glad you jumped into Demi Lovato. Like so many are going to recommend - I absolutely loved both documentaries on Youtube - the Simply Complicated which gives a huge overall to Demi's struggles prior to her overdose and her previous album release but then the most recent has also been so transparent.

Nicki

Just finished your reaction! I love this album so much, it’s now my favorite of Demi’s! “Tell Me You Love Me” is also incredible, but the story here is so touching and the songwriting is amazing. I definitely recommend reacting to her YouTube docu- series “Dancing with the Devil” once all the episodes are released (it’s currently on part 3) and as Kayleigh mentioned, is very eye- opening to what this album is about. Her other YouTube doc “Simply Complicated” is also something I recommend reacting to sometime and her previous album “Tell Me You Love Me”!

heather

madison is her half-sister who was there by her hospital bed during her overdose but she couldn't see her :( so ICU is dedicated to her!

Rahi Hazra

This one works! The other one doesn’t

Lucille

i'd for sure recommend her youtube documentary that she just put out. I think 3/4 parts are out as of now, but it is very eye opening as to what exactly she went through and really what this whole album is about.

Kayleigh Staughton

Unfortunately I am getting an error message. Thanks for the effort!
