Thank you so much for this reaction! I really hope you have listened to or will listen to the original Broadway cast album of this show; in general the singers are even more amazing in that than this movie, and it has your fave Christopher Jackson (who played Washington in Hamilton) as Benny. The songs on the stage musical album sound more vibrant and less autotuned as well

I just watched it it was available on my phone. And for some reason I sobbed like 10 times watching this. It just made me realize so much, I didn’t cry when I first watched this movie, but somehow it just hit different this time

i know this was a while ago but about the time this takes plac in you werent completely wrong. the musical was originally written in the early 2000s but it was updated for the movie so its a little more modern. the reason you found this so accurate is because lin himself is puerto rican and grew up in washington heights.
i would hihgly reccomend you listen to the original broadway cast recording. the movie is fantastic but doesnt compare one bit. i find that movie musical soundtracks always sound overly edited and i think it takes away from the charm of musicals (mamma mia and hairspray are the only two i can think about that doesnt fall into this. and le mis but thats a whole other story). they also changed a lot of the lyrics to update them politically or to fit plot changes as well as cutting some songs out. one of the best emotional beats of the show is the song "everything i know" which nina sings after abuella dies. its a must listen in my opinion.

I'm so happy you liked this show. I love your reaction. I like to attribute the time-frame inconsistencies to flawed memories for however much later he is telling the story to the kids. 😊 I like how you notice so much of the powerful symbolism as you watch. I usually don't get that deep right away, but I'll think about it later (which is perfect for watching others reactions). It would be fun for you to revisit some of your reaction topics with a review a few days later. SuperJersh posted a review on YouTube a few days later with his thoughts after the fact on Hamilton and linked people back to his patreon for the live reaction. I hope you have already run across this, but JIC, I want to suggest you take a look at Howard Ho's analysis of the ending with Usnavi and his daughter: https://youtu.be/XR5mz4yBNt4 I think you would really appreciate it.

No me digas! I cannot belive it! I've never heard of this musical, but thought I would give it a try and watch it with you. Then you start off by mentioning Marc Anthony, and my heart just melts. He's been such a big part of my life. I even traveled from Sweden to Miami in 2019 to go to his concert. Was such a great experience! And then he's in this musical! What?! My jaw dropped to the floor! Qué sorpresa! Am completely in awe of this production! Mindblown. Will watch the rest tomorrow, and then move on to Hamilton. Thank you sweetie. Me haces feliz. 😍😄

That's a great list. I'd probably also add The Last Five Years, Hairspray, and Into the Woods. I prefer the stage version of ITW because I think the story flows better, but I'd be fine with either version, because I love Anna as Cinderella. Actually, speaking of Cinderella, I think he'd enjoy the Brandy/Whitney version if he hasn't seen it.

One thing about Lin Manuel Miranda, is he’s gonna cast his friends in his work. I loved the casting for it. It’s even cooler because in the original Broadway production, Lin played Usnavi, Anthony Ramos played Sonny and Chris Jackson (who played George Washington in Hamilton) played Benny. I don’t think you caught it, but Chris Jackson was the ice cream truck man! And the lady who played abuela in the movie, also originated the role on Broadway, so it was really cool that they brought her in for this project. And the timeline thing you were talking about is completely valid! In the heights, the Broadway show premiered back in 2008 I believe- so it was inspired by the real life blackout that happened back then. I was a kid back when the blackout happened, but I remember it so vividly. Anyway, for the movie they modernized it up to make it more relevant. Like the whole DACA storyline for sonny isn’t originally in the musical, but I think it added a lot of depth.

There's a short musical Lin Manuel Miranda wrote for NPR (it's as weird and great as it sounds). Anthony Ramos was also the lead in that! It's free on youtube! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELBGa6-uOhc

First of all, musicals are one of my favorite things ever, so I’m really enjoying watching your journey through musical theater and films. I adored this movie so much. I literally watched the movie for the first time and then watched your reaction immediately afterwards to justify watching it twice in one day. The music was so good and everyone was amazing in this. And the choreography. I was so impressed by that number in the pool. I can’t say enough good things about this movie. I’m sure I’ll probably end up watching it a dozen times before it leaves HBO Max in July.

I had so many of the same feelings as you while I was watching this over the weekend and then again seeing your reaction. I was privileged enough to see the show when it was on Broadway, but the film is a separate experience on it's own. I've had the soundtrack from the show for a while and sometimes songs will pop up in a shuffle, but it was nice to hear them all again together with the beautiful cinematic display of this film.

Loved your reaction! I watched it just the other night and it was great watching the movie again with you!! As another patron has commented, I hope you were able to listen to the closing credits song, "Home All Summer" Also if you were able to watch after the credits, you'll see a little bit more of Lin-Manuel and Chris Jackson ;) Haha. Really hope you check out the OBC of In The Heights! It's so great to see you falling in love with musicals!

Oh Man, I can't wait for you to hear Chris Jackson and Lin Manuel sing their original roles in this show. I hope you will react to the original album now that you know the story. It's well worth it. I assure you. There are some handcam copies of them performing the whole show on broadway all those years ago on youtube but they are pretty poor quality. I hope we can get you to give some other musicals a chance. There are so many amazing shows I can't even begin to choose.

Yay, good for you catching that Easter Egg with You'll Be Back from Hamilton playing as the call waiting tone. When I first heard that I freaked out I was so happy. Some things you should know. In the play, Lin-manuel Miranda originally starred as Usnavi, and Christopher Jackson who played George Washington in Hamilton with the beautiful voice originally starred as Benny. Also, Christopher made a cameo in here as well playing the Mr. Softee guy against Lin-Manuel's Piragua guy, which I don't think you caught. The song you cut off at the end of the movie just when the credits would roll is an original song written especially for the movie called Home All Summer. It's sung by Anthony Ramos and Lesley Grace who played Nina, and features Marc Anthony in a small way. It's a really great song worth listening to. You might also consider listening to the original In The Heights Broadway soundtrack from 2008 I think. It's amazing, and features some great songs that didn't quite make it to the movie, and different arrangements for others. For example, Christopher Jackson as Benny has a beautiful duet with Nina called Sunrise after their characters spend the night together which is a must-hear and one of my favorites. What's really great is that the original actress who played Abuela Claudia in the play is also her in the movie, so that's always nice to see. If anything, her singing voice sounds like it got even better. Great reaction, this was fun!
