Painting Rocks!

None of the images you see here are finished but I sometimes think its interesting to see half finished pieces from other artist so I thought I would give you some of that here.

These backgrounds have been good practice when it comes to lighting.
Rocks are interesting to paint as they often tend to have angular shapes that catches different mounts of light. Its almost like low poly 3D. One must try to imagine each plane and how much light would hit it.
I find that using very subtle shade differences gives it a nice look. To not make the image feel muddy I try to vary the hues a slight bit. Painting everything in the same hue often make things look dull. Also a variation in saturation helps.

The top image of the large rocks will actually be blurred a bit in the final render as we will focus on a character in the foreground. I wont paint it out of focus but rather add some depth of field later in After Effects. It would be a shame to paint a full picture un-sharp haha.

Still some details to be added but I am quite pleased with the look.

The second image hare had an interesting angle I enjoyed exploring. Both my characters are looking up at the boulder they stand underneath as they are evaluating how it should be climbed.
I wanted to get a sense of height here. By having the boulder cast a shadow down to where they stand, I thought that was a good way to create depth. If it would have been flat lit I think it would have been harder to define how close to the camera the foreground rock is.

I think I will try to get a few shots to this level of detail before fully rendering them.

Thanks Jamie, I think its just a matter of getting to a point where no area is bothering me. If I dont think its rendered enough I will go over it till it looks good. I like the overall images I posted here but they definitely need some closer details.

Looks really great. How many levels of detail would you typically go through before feeling it was complete?
