Art Deco Phoebe (Mar. 2016)

This was the second art deco pic done by the talented Vik Jones and stands (along with the other pic in this series) as the only real art I've ever commissioned. I just love his 1930's art deco style images.

It's nothing at all like my style, which is what makes it awesome.

I asked because the uninitiated often look at a sculpture or painting, declare "that's pretty", and walk to the next.

They don't question the art, and they should.

Artists frequently have very definite reasons for elements in their art, that once explained, either add to the initial impression, or, sometimes, take the meaning down an entirely different path.

Let us imagine a society where they had a Cult of Vestal Virgins. Their symbol, well-known to the Citizens of the Realm, could be a Plaque of Tiles arranged in a Circle. Perhaps they were known to stand in the center of such devices while saying prayers.

A citizen viewing this beautiful picture would know at once that the subject was a member of the Cult; the smaller, repeated elements below might even indicate her status.

Lest I be dismissed in this, simply inspect the Stained Glass Windows of any Christian Cathedral. They are replete with symbolism that only a person conversant with the Faith would recognize.

On the other hand, the circle could just be pretty. Sometimes a Duck is just a Duck.

I'm glad you approve!

I liked them both. But if I had to choose, I'd say that the Puck one felt more Puckish than this one felt Phoebeish.

ElectricGecko

Why not?

I understand the circular "cobblestones" behind Puck or Phoebe is a decorative element, but why is there another in the lower right corner ?

SalemCat

Of the two, I always liked this one better (though both were really kewl...)

Art Deco Phoebe is even better than Art Deco Puck.
