He was the third son of King Maekar I Targaryen, and the elder brother of King Aegon V Targaryen (he was called the unlikely because he was the fourth son of a fourth son and no one expected him to become king), but after several deaths in the Targaryen family after the Blackfyre rebellions (a very long story to tell here) Maekar assumed the throne and had 4 sons: his first son Dareon died of a pox, the second son Aerion had poisoned himself to death by drinking wildfire, thinking he might turn into a dragon hahahaha, so Aemon refused the throne by first joining the maesters and later the Night's Watch, and therefore the youngest son Aegon V takes the throne. this makes Aemon the uncle of King Jaehaerys II Targaryen and thus the great-uncle of the Mad King and the great-great-uncle of Daenerys Targaryen, yes, Aemon is very old hahaha
