According to the show-runners, they were originally planning to kill Ward off in season 1. However, they liked Dalton's performance so much that they re-wrote the storyline to keep his character around.

She's manipulated at times, but she's been forthcoming about what she wants/has been looking for and just never completely reveals everything. Because she speaks almost in riddles, people think she's nuts and don't trust her. And yeah, she dead. She knew what was going to happen 'cause she said to Skye something like, "We will never speak again."

You are going to so love season 3 when you start that. I hope to see at least 2 maybe 3 episode reactions per week. We all had to wait for almost 5 months between seasons. It was torture.
