Very well said. I think the last reason is the most critical one of all. She doesn’t want to be another Katherine or another reason to come between the brothers. She didn’t ask to be caught in the middle like this. It was their doing. Elena didn’t ask Stefan to sacrifice everything (including his humanity) all to protect Damon. She didn’t ask Damon to kiss her and leave her to figure out what it all means. I can’t judge her simply because I have no clue what I would do if I were I her shoes.

2017-10-09 04:22:45 +0000 UTCIt is definitely hard not to judge Elena sometimes this season when it comes to the "love triangle!" I have a few opinions I try to keep in mind when watching these episodes...First, I don't think Elena likes thinking too far into the future because it's been well established that she doesn't want to be a vampire, she wants to have kids, etc so being in love with a vampire isn't an ideal situation for her. Second, like she said in 3x11, she spent a lot of time fighting to stay the girl she was before all this supernatural stuff came into her life. Avoiding change has kept her in a little bit of denial I think. She still hasn't fully embraced how dark her life has become - which keeps her from really facing how dark Stefan can be. In my eyes, she just wants him to be the person he was when they met instead of exploring the idea that some of the things he is doing now are a part of his personality as well. He has layers of good and bad just like Damon - it's just that we saw Damon's evil side first. I hate hate HATE all the "good brother/bad brother" comparisons. Also, I really think she is afraid of being like Katherine and she doesn't like what loving both brothers says about her so she tries to deny it.
