2019-04-11 11:29:10 +0000 UTCThere were these extras that aired with the show sometimes (and they put them on the DVDs & Blu rays) that showed behind the scenes stuff and they hired a martial arts master to come up with the different bending styles and he based all four elemental bending styles on 4 different martial arts disciplines. It's pretty cool how he demonstrated and explained his reasoning for which disciplines he chose.

If you do this, know that some episodes are two-parters. For example, in season one, episode 7 & 8 are best watched together, as well as the season finale (ep 19 & 20). So I'd recommend keeping that in mind when planning so that you don't end up stopping in the middle of a two-parter, as it can mess with the flow and the overall viewing experience of those episodes!
