I think Vanya said in her book, (or to the woodworker guy) that they're siblings but not, or something to that effect. So, I feel that they were all raised together, but all knew they weren't related. They were close, but still at a distance from one another. They always knew they were adopted and done for a purpose (with all the training). They call each other "brother" and "sister," but I think by the time they started hitting puberty, the fact that they are NOT actually related probably was definitely well in their minds. It's probably like one step past kids growing up in a boarding school/orphanage. They're not related, but think of/call each others their brothers and sisters. I can understand the fact that they call each other that sitting wrong with someone, but I quickly remembered they aren't actually related and obviously grew closer with shared experiences and trauma, so it's understandable they could fall for one another.
