Yes being dark skin is harder, (I am a black woman, however I am on the lighter side like Lena)) Its, funny cause other non black Americans who reacted to this episode always say how ridiculous it is, But here in America it's real and a every day thing especially from other black people. I had a darker skin female friends and kids use to call her skin tar in school. Its terrible really.

I am not part of the African American community in the US, but from what I do know about it I think Lena's mom doesn't have a complete understanding of how her daughter grew up and the discrimination she has to face. Lena's mom is probably right on the fact that she doesn't know what it is like to be a black woman in the US, but she was also assuming that her daughter has it easier than she does. Like Lena said, she never felt completely accepted by either community. She wasn't black enough for the black community and not white enough for the white community. And I can see how it might be hard for her to have her mom of all people reinforce the idea that she's not black enough to understand what she goes through after years of feeling discrimination from both communities. So her mom is probably right on the fact that Lena doesn't know where she's coming from, but her mom isn't right to assume that she knows how Lena has dealt with discrimination either. They've both faced discrimination differently and I think who felt it 'worse' or 'harder' is relative, but I do think they've both faced discrimination due to their skin colors. Also, as a mother, she's handling the situation wrong, no matter if what she is saying is right or wrong. I really love this show. This family is so diverse and the amount of representation in this shows is amazing! I'm happy you're enjoying it so much. I really miss it and it's fun rewatching it with you. :)

Yeah she probably is but I still don't get the need to tell her that and make her feel bad about it on such a special day.

Lena's mom is not wrong love, but it was the wrong venue to point it out. Believe me she's not wrong at all

People feel the need to point this type of information out because they want their child, friend, or whoever to be aware of privilege they posses based on race, skin pigment, financial status and etc. I agree the way her mom phrased it was rude and I don't think Mariana's party was the place to address it.

You are right she is not awful. Her comment was awful tho. And I can't really comment about whether if what she said is true or not. But imo I don't see the necessity of pointing that out and make her daughter feel that way. What she said was really hurtful.

Hey Juli, I've never commented before but I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your reactions. I really appreciate that you make an effort to consider the points of view of every character even when they're not being particularly likable. As for what might or might not happen between Brandon and Callie, I'm fairly certain that it's against policy for foster siblings to engage in romantic/sexual relationships, if family services found out Callie would be removed from the home and placed somewhere else. It's why Jude is so worried.

I don't think Lena's mom is an awful person she just has had a different experience in America than her biracial daughter which does indeed happen in America.

I loved this episode. I was excited to see your reaction to it. Your reactions to Talya (brandon's now ex-girlfriend) are hilarious. Lena's mom has a point about dark skinned women having troubles in America that light skinned counterparts don't experience. Her comments wouldn't make her a colorist because when you are a colorist you believe your skin tone makes you better than other colors.

a few fun facts:
-) Jennifer Lopez is actually one of the producers of this show
-) Sherri and Teri (who play Stef and Lena) are actually bffs and soulmates in real life - they say they feel like wives
-) Maia and Cierra (who play Callie and Mariana) actually became besties and are now the stars of the fosters spin-off “good trouble”
-) the executive producers (who are both gay as well) wanted to show a family like their friends have and were surprised that nobody made a family show centered around two moms before
-) you will find out how the foster care system works and what Callie is allowed to do (in regards to Brandon and otherwise). that system sucks btw.
