As someone who has absolutely loved Les Miserables since I first saw it on broadway in New York back in the 1990s, one thing that has always rubbed me awkwardly is the Marius/Cosette insta-love. And I’ve seen several performances and adaptations of it since, and it’s always felt that same way for me, and it was the only unbelievable thing in the entire production for me. So I, for one, was in complete agreement with you while watching that. Aside from that, this is actually one of my absolute favorite broadway musicals, and this film adaptation was the best, in my opinion. All the performances were just so raw and genuine, especially Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne. Thank you so much for another thoroughly enjoyable reaction.

2019-11-28 06:02:27 +0000 UTCVictor Hugo as an author included so much socio-political commentary in his writing, and fully 20% of the book is devoted to commentary on the times. But the massive over-simplification of the "moral" of the story, with all due respect to Victor Hugo, because it is still relevant today (perhaps even more relevant today) is: love is the most important thing. When Javert had to face that doing the legal thing (arresting him) would be immoral, and doing the moral thing (letting him go) would be illegal; it literally killed him. Now, if he had been a more loving person, then the conflict of interest might not have killed him. He may have found it in himself to be moral, and face up to breaking the law (and taking the punishment); or he may have upheld the law to do his duty, but know that he would answer for it when he died (and taking the punishment). But as it was, it just destroyed him. So... by Valjean's example, back then the same as now: just be loving. It may not work out immediately, but it will in the end.

2019-08-13 20:21:42 +0000 UTCBy the way my dear, one of my favourite things is that the man who plays the Bishop of Digne is the same man who first played Jean Valjean when the musical was first premiered in London and on Broadway. :)

2019-07-30 21:34:42 +0000 UTCThank you, thank you for such a fun and wonderful reaction for one of my favorite movies and musicals! I absolutely love Les Miserables. It's so beautiful. I love the music and the acting by each of the actors chosen to play their characters in this movie. So phenomenal. And what's even more amazing... is that this movie was filmed live, which has never been done before in movie musical history. In the stage play it has, but never in any movie musicals. All of the actors prerecord the songs they sing beforehand in a studio, so they can simply worry about their acting. But this movie was all filmed live, so the emotion shown in each of the characters is absolutely very real, like you stated. I absolutely love Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, and Anne Hathaway as Fantine. Their acting was phenomenal and the songs that they sang, especially hearing and seeing Hugh Jackman sing Valjean's Soliloquy in the beginning like you loved, and Fantine's extremely emotional song, I Dreamed a Dream. Phenomenal and beautiful. I can't help but cry during her song every time I watch this movie. And I love the rest of the characters and the actors who play them as well. However, my favorite character throughout this movie is actually Marius Pontmercy, played by Eddie Redmayne. And you stated you recognized him from somewhere, but you didn't ever say from what... Eddie Redmayne also plays Newt from the movies, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. He's an incredibly brilliant actor in everything I have seen him in, and I love hearing and seeing him sing his main song from Les Miserables... Empty Chairs At Empty Tables. It's my favorite song throughout the musical and his emotion is so raw and real. It's beautiful, and again, I can't help but cry every time I watch this movie. As for Marius' and Cosette's love... with it being love at first sight, I myself don't really know if such kind of love is real or not. But being a girl who has loved fairytales and true love stories my whole life, I want to believe that such kind of love is real. Also, back in this time period in history, during the French Revolution, there was so much pain and misery, and the poor suffered greatly. That's what this musical is all about and the title, Les Miserables interpreted, means "the miserable ones." Both Marius and Cosette suffered because they both felt very much alone, despite Cosette having a father who loved her. All these characters felt very much alone and suffered greatly in their own ways. So, I feel that in the moment Marius and Cosette laid eyes on one another, they both saw true beauty and love in a world where there was none. That is why I feel they clasped onto one another so hard and fought for their love, even if they did just meet. Plus... love back in these days was so much different... like everything else, than love is in our days. It was a different world back then. So yes... I do believe the love Marius and Cosette felt for one another was very real, and to me it's beautiful. As for the main storyline itself... I love how this musical is all about the strength in these characters as they fight for freedom and love, against the tyranny and hatred throughout France during this tragic time period. And it's why I absolutely love seeing all of those who died fighting for the good against the bad, come back in the end as they sing one final song together upon the barricades... singing the Epilogue. And I love that both Jean Valjean and Fantine were among them, because they too died in their fight. This song and moment is meant to inspire those who live beyond them to keep fighting and to live despite the difficulties in life. Such a beautiful story and everything about this musical couldn't be better. So thank you again! As always, I truly appreciate you reacting to this movie and many more that I love so much too. Sincerely, Heidi

2019-07-30 12:12:51 +0000 UTCOoh I have something to watch this morning! I love this adaptation (even if Gavroche was cut down). I don't care what anyone says about Russell Crowe, I think he did a fine job. I used to know Stars by heart. It really encapsulates what motivates Javert.
