Also, I don't know if you put two and two together, but the three episodes were actually all linked by Moriarty. He is the one who "hired" the killer taxi driver in the pilot (the man said his name) and who was behind the organisation in the second episode (the chinese lady at the end is killed by someone named "M" with whom she exchanged messages). There is no "filler" episode, each one is here to get you closer to the endgame :)

Most of the stories are a modern twist on the originals, for example "A Study in Pink" was loosely based on "A Study of Scarlet". "The Blind Banker" was inspired by 3 different stories from the original novels according to the wikipedia page. His lack of knowledge about the solar system and the 5-pips from the warning also came from the original works. While its a very modern and original take, they try to connect things back to the story's roots.
