But you really do have to pay attention to every little detail, don't be afraid to pause and go back and re-watch scenes to understand better. Also a little game you can play during the episodes is look out for ghosts. The director through a few in the backgrounds of some of the scenes. The timeline can also be confusing but eventually make sense.

It does a really good job of detailing the complexities of sibling relationships while also managing to scare the shit out of you lol. Great cast, great writing, great production values. Episodes 5 and 6 are particularly strong. Little known fact, the guy who plays the young version of the dad in this series is Henry Thomas, the little boy from E.T. Just learned that the other day and it blew my mind lol.

To answer your question, there is a book that has been turned into a few movies... it borrowed a few lines and character names, but is a totally different story. Don't worry, this show actually is very much a character driven drama.
