CAPTAIN MARVEL Movie REVIEW CAPTAIN MARVEL Movie REVIEW

Comments

Later on she became known as "Photon," which is her mom's callsign you see on her jet.

One fun thing is that in the comics, Monica (the little girl) has super powers and used the Captain Marvel name before Carol did.

Adam Nelson

I loved it, and I can't wait to watch it again.

Sarah E

True, but with this video, he pretty much sticks to the movies timeline. That's why I thought this one was pretty good for Juli.

Thadman

Charlie is often on point, but he often overthinks and cross-references obscure comic references which none but a hardcore collector would know.

Yes, Kamala Khan is the first Muslim-American Marvel superhero. Although her power set is... different. I have to say, with regard to gender norms... it's not even really worth mentioning "Muslim-American female Marvel superhero" because female superheroes in Marvel comics is so normal it's boring. In a good way. Film and TV is another thing altogether though. So yes, Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) is the first female-led MCU feature. Unfortunately that distinction upsets me a bit. Because do we know who the first superpowered female superhero who appeared in this universe was? Natasha "Black Widow" Romanoff is a super hero, but is not super powered. And it was before Wanda "Scarlet Witch" Maximoff premiered. And Lady Sif is technically an alien, therefore not supercharged; just super good at what she does (like Black Widow). It was Daisy "Quake" Johnson. And no one but MAOS fans talk about it, sadly.

In the comics, I know that Carol Danvers went through a lot of iterations. When I was a kid, I was reading some of Captain Mar-Vell's comics and Carol became Ms. Marvel because the explosion that gave her her powers (some machine called the Psyche-magnetron xD) blew some of Mar-Vell's powers into her as he tried to shield her. Yes, Mar-Vell was a guy in the comics. Her powers have grown and morphed throughout the years and after Mar-Vell died, she changed her name to Captain Marvel to honor him. He actually died of cancer in the comics. Such a weird, ordinary way for a hero to die. There is a Ms. Marvel now who is a teenage Inhuman who was a big fan of Captain Marvel so she took that name in honor of HER. What goes around comes around, I guess. Her powers are not at all cosmic in nature. I think she can change the size and density of different parts of her body, making her arms, legs, etc, really long and her fists really big and hard and other stuff that I'm not really familiar with. I'm not sure, but I think she's the first major superhero who is Muslim also.

Really loved it. Seen it three times already. Never seen a MCU movie more than twice in theaters before soooo yeah really loved it. It’s a lot more psychological story then other mcu movies which I like but maybe didn’t work for everyone. I thought the acting was really good by everyone and I'm excited to see more of CM in other movies. Usually I just enjoy MCU movies like big blockbuster movies, but this was the first time I really got identified with the internal struggle of a superhero story.

About her not showing up in previous movies, the Russo Brothers had planned on having her show up at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, but decided not to because she's such a big character, they didn't want her to show up without showing who she is. I'd heard that last shot of them movie, with the new Avengers assembling with The Vision and Wanda there that the spot of Wanda (which is CG) was originally gonna be Captain Marvel. They said they felt they didn't want her just as a footnote in some other movie. People would be like, "Wait, who the hell is THAT??" This movie explained she was out in the far reaches of the galaxy, searching for a new home for the Skrulls and that's why she wasn't even in the realm of the Guardians. Plus, the Guardians were a WEE bit busy with their own shit. ;-) They were really the MCU's foray into their cosmic stuff, so their movies were just about them and didn't want to throw too much at non-comic readers. They introduced them and a lot of other supporting cosmic entities like The Sovereign, Thanos (more of what his agenda is), the Nova Corps, The Celestials, etc. Also, storytelling-wise, she's a REALLY big gun and they wanna keep that hidden until you tell her story. Heh, I KNEW you were totally shipping Carol and Maria. I said during it, "Oh god, there's NO WAY Juli is NOT shipping these two. I can hear her yelling at them to kiss throughout this whole thing." ;-) Also, I imagined you having the same reaction when they found the core, hitting your brother and goin' "It's the Tessaract! THE TESSARACT!!" and them being like, "The what now?" xD Me, I said, "Oh crap, The Tessaract." Now it explains how Fury and SHIELD had it at the end of "Thor" and testing it at the beginning of "The Avengers." Before, we assumed they had it 'cause Howard Stark collected it from the bottom of the ocean at the end of "Captain America: The First Avenger." It changed hands a couple of times before Fury, basically, took sole control of it here. One other thing I thought of is that the two most powerful Avengers got their powers from Infinity Stones, Wanda (we haven't seen her full potential yet) and Carol Danvers. Makes sense. Also, yeah she's gonna be a major part of fixing what Thanos did, but also, I think, Ant-Man.

I really liked it and I try not to analyze a movie while I'm watching it (the first time). I just like to strap in and enjoy the ride from a 1st person perspective. Subsequent viewings, I can view in a more 3rd person perspective and pick out what I liked and didn't like specifically and what worked and didn't work for me. Right now, only seeing it once, I don't have a lot of negative to say about it. I really enjoyed myself all the way through. Since I don't normally rate things I can't rate things with much consistency and most of my ratings probably wouldn't match up with most peoples' anyway. I've heard complaints that some parts were hard to see because they were dark. I saw it in IMAX so I had no problems seeing but I did think that if anyone saw it any other way, especially 3D, they might have a hard time seeing stuff. This was the first big budge superhero-type movie for these directors, who made their bones doing horror, so thinking about it, they're comfortable with dark lighting. They'll learn. I went in without a lot of expectations and hopes. I just wanted to see how they explained her origin for the MCU and to get an idea how she fits in with the larger universe. I liked the unconventional origin layout of it. As someone said, it was like love letter to 90s with a "Memento" origin. Some might be thrown off by that slow reveal of her origin, but I enjoyed it a lot, since I love "Memento" AND origin stories. I was actually glad with the amount of Coulson they had 'cause I thought it'd be closer to a cameo, but I think they paid off his and Fury's relationship well.

Thadman

Really liked your review. I agree with Christopher a bit that I didn’t really enjoy the beginning of the movie, but maybe that will be better on second viewing. (Maybe similar to your thoughts about more of Carols backstory). I love the final 2/3 of the movie. The banter between Fury and Carol was fantastic. And that Flerken!!! Hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And of course Coulson (wish he had a bigger role). For Endgame, I think as a fan if you want to go and see it at the movies, then you should go. As much as I’d love to see you react to it for the first time, you deserve to see it the way you want. I know I’m going to be there opening day to see it! If you want, you should too!!

Aaron Thorpe

Juli, I’ve just started watching this and am excited to hear your thoughts but can you help me: I’m having trouble playing your Thor 2: The Dark World reaction. It just freezes at about 1 minute I think? It’s the only one that does it. Any chance you could re-upload?

Aaron Thorpe

I honestly wanted to see more MAOS connective tissue, although I'm glad that we got any (Coulson) at all. But seriously, MAOS has more screen time of Kree than any other Marvel property, so..... Come to think of it, outside the Guardians of the Galaxy, Coulson has more interaction with Kree than anybody.

I thought the movie had some good themes and since it is an origin movie I judge it a little differently then the others. It took a little while to get interesting and the editing felt a little off but I enjoyed the second and third act a lot. This is the same thing that happened with black panther. I put it above antman 2 and Thor the dark world but am definitely willing to see what they do in her sequels and endgame. I also loved coulson in this. This movie was main message was targeted towards women but I also could apply to anyone which I love. I give it a 7/10

Christopher simeon

I really enjoyed the film. Goose turned out to be the standout of the supporting cast. :)

Jarrod Wild

In my opinion The movie was dissapointing, it had some couple good twists with the skrulls, but overral the action scenes were underwhelming and the pacing editing felt a little weird, especially with the train scene, i was hyped to see what really happened to fury's eye because last time in winter woldier he said to cap, last time i trusted someone i lost a eye, so it was a huge letdown for me, i was also dissapointed that ronan the accuser had little to no screentime at all, from the trailers i expected he had something to do but i guess not, i hope that Marvel isn't get lazy with the new phase four coming up, this movie felt like a phase one movie, the end credit was hype as hell cannot wait for Endgame, i trust the russo brothers who are the directors of infinity war and Endgame, they are defintely the ones that can make captain marvel a badass, because she felt a little wooden in her own movie.
