Yes Benji was harsh here and he shouldn't have said what he said. I won't defend it bc it was terrible. I still don't think Benji is an overall terrible person or anything, but what he said was a very low blow and is something that should be explored more.

I couldn’t agree more with what your saying! I feel like people are putting to much blame on Benji like he should know what a prefect relationship is, which is so not true! He wasn’t in the best one last season and I think people are forgetting that! I could go on and on about it really but I’m not here for the Benji bashing because it’s really not nice or justified!

Benji was mean, I agree but have you ever said things you didn’t mean to say to someone BECAUSE you were angry? Of course, we all did. Benji is sixteen and he tried the whole season to be nothing but supportive and understanding to Victor. The whole season was all about Victor: how he was feeling about coming out at school, how to handle things with his mom, how to handle things with the team & more… We didn’t even check at how was Benji with his family, friends & with the whole drinking problems during all these moments? + his mom who treated him like shit… I get his perspective.

I understand Benji is a teenager seeing someone he cares for in pain but whenever Victor is happy about the progress his mom's made, Benji is blatantly negative. It's like he is saying 'think about how your mom's reaction to you being gay affects me' instead of considering the fact that Victor lives in the situation. Now, to top it off, he says that Victor is making a big deal out of being gay because everything is new to him but he knew this when he got with someone who was not only in the closet but had a girlfriend when they met. Benji pushes Victor to come out at school, ruins Victor's happiness at his mother's progress, then implies his patience is something Victor should be grateful for, and yet he has been keeping this part of himself from Victor for /months/. These are several moments that highlight Benji's tendency to put his feelings towards Victor's situation over how Victor actually feels.

Yes, Benji was mean. But like he said, he was embarrassed and ashamed. And so he lashed out. He's sixteen, and his boyfriend found out that he's a alcoholic against his will, in a very public way. Is his reaction great? No. Is it human and believable? Yes. Again, people are so hard on Benji. He spent months feeling like shit because of Victor's mom, and seeing the person he loves in pain because of it. So of course he's frustrated about that too! I don't know, I just feel like people want him to be perfect, and forget that he's just a teen... And I personally love the fact that they made him flawed, it makes the story so much more interesting and so much more real.

This is where my feelings about Benji go from neutral to dislike. When he got with Victor while he was in the closet, he knew what he was getting into. He constantly guilts Victor under the guise of concern and acts like his patience is a privilege instead of what should be expected in the situation.

yeah now that you've mentioned it, it does feel like they focused more on the romantic relationships rather than the platonic ones, the writers seem to take the audiences criticism well so hopefully we get more of that in season 3

Benji has a habit of making everything about him and not caring about what Victor is dealing with unless he's comfortable. Then he apologizes and the cycle is repeated. It's why I just don't think they're compatible at all.
