You're very on point with your analysis as always, Juli! I think they're always trying to show how keeping a blind eye to injustice in general makes nightmares like Gilead possible. If opression in any way, shape or form is happening and you're accepting it, you are part of the problem. Go to marches, go and vote for the right people and just keep an open eye to sexism and racism all around. The Waterfords went into it from an idealistic point of view, others didn't. Either way if your values include the opression or violence of anyone then maybe you should rethink your values - that is probably the lesson learned here. The Handmaid's Tale is so scary, because it feels so real and as if this could happen to us too, if we don't find our inner June and nolite te bastardes carborundorum.

And Serena (Mrs. Waterford) was never a feminist, she's always believed in women fulfilling their "biological destiny". That's what her book, A Women's Place, is about.

Also, and I'm not excusing Aunt Lydia at all she's terrible, but I do believe she actually cares for the handmaids (and she shows it many times throughout the show) she just twistedly believes that all of this is good and she's "helping" them when she punishes them.
And though it can be frustrating when June doesn't speak up about things, you gotta remember she has to be strategic in her fight. If she were to do or say things outright or without thinking she could be killed. That's why mayday is underground, discreet and strategic with how they are moving to overthrow everything

the decent into Gilead was definitely a progression of things and people did and are still fighting back, I don't know if you've noticed but they've mentioned war going on a few times. There are still States in the US that haven't been taken over yet and there are people fighting against this system
