Awee love watching with you. AND... Abuela Claudia is the singing Voice Of Abuela Alma in Encanto. And Stephanie Beatriz who played Carla the girlfriend is Mirabel! So Lin really got his homies on for Disney.

So glad you reacted to this! I'm still watching your video, but wanted to comment some thoughts before I forget lol I was born and raised in Washington Heights and felt so represented with this movie. The majority of it was filmed 2 blocks away from my childhood home (I lived on the corner of 177 & Audubon, and Usnavi's store, the taxi company, Abuela's house and salon are on 175 & Audubon). The neighborhood now in real life isn't as clean as in the movie, which is quite sad to be honest... but I remember seeing the world just as colorful & beautiful as a kid/young teen. And it's so true that you pretty much end up almost knowing everyone from your building/block. People are always play dominoes, cards, working out, gossiping, kids running around outside. The music during summer is annoyingly nonstop lol. The sense of Latin community is strong. The majority of people are Dominicans, but there are SOOO many people of other Latin heritages. As a child I remember accompanying my granduncle throughout the neighborhood as he sold piraguas. It was my first "job" back when I was 6-7 year old lol. Back then piraguas sold for about $1 and many Dominicans called them "frio frios". Not sure what the cost is now. Last year my grandma began dying of cancer (finally resting in peace this last Xmas) and I was able to fly up to The Heights various times to see her. She told me stories I've never heard before, and told me one that was very much like Abuela Claudia's. My grandma immigrated from DR to The Heights in the 40s and experienced a similar culture shock. She told us stories of being harassed on the subway by American men, how she struggled working at a clothing factory just to support her mother. But the rest of the Latin community in The Heights helped support her and shaped the rest of our family through the decades. Abuela Claudia's scene in the movie hits me HARD. Watching you react to it made me cry again. In your reaction, at around 1hr 06m you ask if the background is green screened. It's actually not & that section of the park has become a big photo op spot. After the movie was released, and on one of my visits to see grandma, I took my partner around the neighborhood to show him where things were filmed and how much history there is in our little barrio. This is a picture of me by that same section in your reaction: https://photos.app.goo.gl/smPp7x14tMThaSkb7 The long tunnel Abuela walks through is the deepest subway station (173ft below ground) in New York City. It's full of graffiti and most residents don't like it, but I personally love the colors and artistic history. Unfortunately the tunnel gets quite littered with trash because humans can never respect anything. But recently there was a big cleanup to the tunnel. I loved how beautifully they portrayed it in the movie & the line of people gave me chills. I love to swim and was still in diapers when I learned to swim in Highbridge pool. Highbridge has 2 enormous public pools, 1 that is shallow (I think 3-4ft max) and one that gets much deeper. I have so many memories of playing with my cousins in both pools. The scene in the movie was so epic and never would I have thought to see such a spectacle be done at Highbridge. We also have a beautiful Broadway theater on the corner of 175 & Broadway called United Palace. The original In The Heights play was performed there before going national, and the grand opening of the movie was also here. You can also see it during Season 1 of Pose. It's the theater where Damian's teacher takes him to see ballet. Not related to the movie, but a fun fact is that in our neighborhood is the oldest building on the entire island of Manhattan. It's called the Morris Jumel mansion and it ended up being like an outpost during the Revolutionary war. George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and many of the other founding fathers used the house for strategy. This little house contains one of the war rooms aka "rooms where it happened" where Aaron Burr wanted to be involved with during the Hamilton musical. Aaron Burr had a bedroom in this house where Lin Manuel stayed in to get inspiration for a few Hamilton songs. Anyway, thanks for reading hehe 🤗
