Wardrobe Tour: Outerwear (pt 2)

Yeah I guess? I guess by workwear I don't mean "workwear" "Carhartt" trendy whatever whatever, I mean the clothing worn by people who do hands-on jobs. Idk, I fell into liking workwear by accident when I started working a job where it made sense to wear so it being trendy is weird to me because it feels like my uniform (granted, one I've grown an appreciation for). It was interesting to note how my own practical needs at work influenced the choices I was making in getting dressed. I found myself evaluating garments for durability, cuts that allow freedom of movement without excess fabric to get caught on things, washable materials in colors that don't stain easily, pocket placement, sleeves that roll up and stay there, and overall, a lot more appreciation for so many features I didn't used to care about in my clothes. I kinda worked my way backwards from small details I liked to the overall purpose these features served and (lastly and least-importantly in a work setting) the visual effect created. I needed a pocket I could access under an apron; carpenter pants have a pocket partway down the side of the leg under the hammer loop. I needed something I could get dirty and wash multiple times a week; better go denim or sturdy cotton canvas. Then I went a little more distant and looked at functional design features I liked but didn't necessarily need day-in-day-out: action-backs for shoulder movement, those multidirectional jacket front pockets that have both a side and top entrance, wide pants that taper strongly at the calves for tucking into tall boots. None of those small, individual features are trendy exactly, but all of them can be found in workwear. And workwear's design consideration for what the wearer will be *doing* in clothing is something I think you would really enjoy.

It’s the “baggy” style from Shinya Kozuka 💫💫

For sure, spot on. It’s just hard with workwear because it’s soooo trendy right now. But! I may just not know how to pull it off 💫💫

the tailoring is very very well done on the first blue coat

I know a lot of people who dip, but I live in a hillbilly redneck town in the South East US lol

Loved hearing about the specific design features that intrigue you about your own garments. Curious about what your relationship to workwear is? Seems like you value functional details, textiles, and a certain philosophy of living your life in clothes that seems compatible with, if not the *aesthetic* sensibilities of workwear, then certainly its attitude toward clothing.

the undercover jacket is insaaane, the way they used a simple pleat and a simple graphic but still ended up with something beyond cool. do you happen to know which collection it belongs to?

Sara Jamshidi

I love the undercover graphic, I think erd does graphics pretty flippin neat as well. Nothing compared to a Philipp Plein print though.
